About the author
Prologue
The moon hung low in the sky, casting an ethereal glow over the sleeping village of Tenochtitlan. In the heart of the Aztec capital, Chief Tlaloc lay restless on his woven mat, the cool breeze from the lake whispering through the open windows of his grand chamber. His eyes fluttered closed, and he drifted into a vision as vivid as life itself.
Tlaloc found himself standing on a cliff overlooking a vast, shimmering ocean. The sun, a radiant ball of fire, dipped below the horizon, setting the waters ablaze with hues of orange and gold. From the depths of the ocean, a magnificent feathered serpent rose, its scales glinting like jewels in the twilight. It spoke in a voice that resonated with ancient wisdom. Tlaloc, leader of the Aztecs, the gods have chosen you. Beyond this ocean lies a land of untold riches and knowledge. You must lead your people across the waters and unite with other nations to discover this new world.
The serpent vanished, leaving Tlaloc with a profound sense of purpose. He awoke with a start, his heart pounding with the weight of the revelation. Dawn was breaking, and the first light of day filtered into his chamber, illuminating the intricately woven tapestries and golden artifacts that adorned his room.
Determined to seek counsel, Tlaloc rose and dressed in his ceremonial robes, adorned with vibrant feathers and precious stones. His people deeply revered such visions, seeing them as direct communication from the gods. He made his way through the silent corridors of the palace, past the sleeping guards, and out into the courtyard where the temple priests would soon gather for morning prayers.
At the temple's entrance, Tlaloc found High Priest Quetzalcoatl already awake, his keen eyes observing the sunrise. Chief Tlaloc,
Quetzalcoatl greeted, bowing slightly. You seem troubled. What brings you here at this early hour?
Tlaloc recounted his vision with fervor, every detail etched in his mind. The gods have spoken to me, Quetzalcoatl. They have shown me a new land across the ocean, a place of great promise. We must prepare for a journey unlike any we have ever undertaken.
Quetzalcoatl listened intently, his face a mask of contemplation. A vision of such magnitude cannot be ignored. Our culture holds such divine messages in the highest regard. Still, we must consult the stars and perform the sacred rituals to seek further guidance and validate this vision.

As the sun climbed higher, the priests gathered, and the temple came alive with the sounds of chants and the smell of burning incense. Tlaloc watched as they prepared the sacred fire, his mind racing with thoughts of the journey ahead. He knew this vision was not just a dream but a calling from the gods. The path laid before him was daunting, yet filled with the promise of discovery and unity.
As the priests danced and sang around the fire, Tlaloc felt a sense of calm wash over him. The flames leapt and twisted, casting shadows that seemed to take the shape of distant lands and unfamiliar faces. He knew this was a sign, a confirmation that his vision was true.
The rituals continued, and as the day turned to night, the stars appeared, twinkling like a thousand eyes watching over them. Quetzalcoatl approached Tlaloc, his face illuminated by the firelight. The gods have blessed your vision, Chief. It is clear that we must heed their call. But this journey will require more than faith. We will need allies, resources, and the wisdom of the other nations.
Tlaloc nodded, a determined look in his eyes. Then let us begin the preparations. We will rally the greatest minds, the bravest warriors, and the most skilled craftsmen. Together, we will build the ships that will carry us across the ocean and into a new era of prosperity.
The vision of the feathered serpent and the promise of new lands had ignited a fire within Tlaloc. He knew the journey ahead would be fraught with challenges, but the potential rewards were beyond measure. With the gods' blessing and the strength of their people, they would embark on this grand voyage, forging a path to a brighter future.
As the priests continued their prayers, Tlaloc turned his gaze to the horizon, where the first stars of night glimmered. The journey was set in motion, and the fate of the Aztec Empire would soon be forever changed.

The golden sun ascended in the sky, casting it's warm light over the bustling streets of Tenochtitlan. Chief Tlaloc stood on the grand terrace of his palace, looking over the city as it came alive with traders, artisans, and children playing in the courtyards. The morning air was crisp and filled with the scent of blooming flowers from the palace gardens. Today was a day of great importance, for Tlaloc had summoned the empire’s most esteemed priests and advisors to discuss his prophetic vision.
Inside the main hall, the assembled group of priests, warriors, and scholars murmured amongst themselves. The high ceiling, adorned with intricate murals of gods and heroes, seemed to echo with anticipation. At the head of the room, Tlaloc took his place, his presence commanding immediate silence. He raised a hand, and the assembled advisors turned their full attention to him.
Honored advisors, priests, and friends,
Tlaloc began, his voice resonating through the hall. Last night, I received a vision from the gods. A vision of a land across the vast ocean, rich in resources and knowledge. The feathered serpent Quetzalcoatl himself appeared and spoke to me of a destiny that await's us.
The room erupted in a mixture of gasps and murmurs. High Priest Quetzalcoatl stepped forward, his face calm but his eyes reflecting the gravity of Tlaloc’s words. Chief Tlaloc, such a vision is indeed a powerful sign. What did the great Quetzalcoatl convey to you?
Tlaloc recounted the details of his dream, describing the serpent, the ocean, and the promise of new lands. The room grew silent, each word weighed with the significance of divine prophecy. When he finished, the high priest nodded solemnly.
The gods have blessed you with this vision,
Quetzalcoatl said. But such an endeavor requires more than divine guidance. We must seek the wisdom of the stars, perform the necessary rituals, and gather the resources for this great journey.
Advisor Itztli, a seasoned warrior with numerous battle scars, stood and addressed the assembly. Our people have faced many challenges, but this—crossing the ocean—this is something entirely new. We need the support of our neighboring tribes and the skills of our best craftsmen to build the ships that can withstand such a journey.
Indeed,
Tlaloc agreed. We will need to rally the might of our allies, for this is not just an expedition for the Aztecs alone but for all the great nations of our land. We must unite our strength and wisdom.
Another advisor, Xochitl, known for her strategic mind, added, We should send emissaries to the Iroquois Confederacy, the Maya, and the Inca. Convince them of the importance of this journey. If we can show them the potential for shared prosperity, they will join us.
High Priest Quetzalcoatl raised his hand for silence. Let us not forget the spiritual preparations. The gods must see our commitment and unity. We shall perform a grand ceremony to seek their continued guidance and blessing.
The advisors nodded in agreement, each contemplating the roles they would play in this monumental task. Tlaloc felt a surge of pride and determination. His vision was not just his own; it had become the shared destiny of his people.
It is decided,
Tlaloc declared, his voice strong and unwavering. We will gather our allies, construct our ships, and prepare for the journey the gods have destined for us. This is our path to greatness.
The advisors dispersed, each tasked with their own responsibilities. Tlaloc remained on the terrace, looking out over his city. He knew the challenges ahead were immense, but with the strength and unity of his people, they would succeed. The vision of Quetzalcoatl was a beacon, guiding them towards a future filled with promise and discovery.
As the sun climbed higher, casting it's radiant light over Tenochtitlan, Tlaloc felt a deep sense of purpose. The journey to the new lands had begun, and with the gods' favor, they would conquer the unknown and forge a new era of prosperity.

The great plaza of Tenochtitlan buzzed with anticipation as the people gathered for the sacred ceremony. The air was thick with the aroma of copal incense, and the sound of drums echoed across the city, calling the faithful to witness the divine rituals. High Priest Quetzalcoatl stood at the base of the towering pyramid, his robes adorned with feathers and precious stones reflecting the early morning sun.
Chief Tlaloc stood beside him, his presence commanding respect and attention. As they awaited the start of the ceremony, murmurs rippled through the crowd, revealing a mix of excitement and skepticism. Quetzalcoatl raised his hands to the sky, signaling the start of the ceremony. People of Tenochtitlan,
his voice boomed, we gather today to seek the guidance of the gods for our great journey. Chief Tlaloc has received a vision, and we must honor the gods and ask for their blessing.
As the crowd hushed, a few dissenting murmurs could still be heard. Tlaloc knew that convincing everyone would require more than divine invocation. He would need to address their fears and doubts directly, uniting the people through shared purpose and careful preparation.

his voice boomed, we gather today to seek the guidance of the gods for our great journey. Chief Tlaloc has received a vision, and we must honor the gods and ask for their blessing.
A collective murmur of awe rippled through the crowd. The priests began their ascent up the pyramid steps, each carrying offerings of maize, cacao, and flowers. The rhythmic beating of drums and the melodic chants filled the air, creating an atmosphere of reverence and solemnity.
Reaching the top of the pyramid, Quetzalcoatl and the other priests arranged the offerings on the altar, their movements precise and practiced. Tlaloc watched intently, feeling the weight of the moment. This ceremony was crucial; it was a plea for divine favor and guidance on the perilous journey that lay ahead.
Quetzalcoatl lifted a chalice filled with sacred pulque, a fermented drink made from the maguey plant, and poured it over the offerings. The liquid shimmered in the sunlight, and the fragrance of the sacred drink mingled with the scent of incense. He then raised his arms again, his voice ringing out in an ancient prayer.
O mighty gods, hear our plea. We stand before you with humble hearts, seeking your wisdom and blessing. Guide us across the vast ocean to the new lands shown to our noble Chief Tlaloc. Grant us the strength, the courage, and the unity to fulfill our destiny.
The crowd below repeated the prayer, their voices merging into a powerful chorus that seemed to reach the heavens. As the chant continued, Quetzalcoatl took a small obsidian knife and made a ceremonial cut on his palm, letting his blood drip onto the offerings. It was a gesture of devotion and sacrifice, meant to demonstrate their earnest plea to the gods.
The priests joined in, each making a small cut and adding their blood to the ritual. The crowd watched in silent reverence, understanding the significance of the sacrifice. High above, the sun reached it's zenith, bathing the pyramid in a golden glow.
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the plaza, carrying the scent of the offerings and the sound of the chants far and wide. The flames on the altar flickered and then roared to life, growing brighter and more intense. The people gasped in awe, interpreting it as a sign of the gods' presence and favor.
Tlaloc stepped forward, his voice steady and filled with conviction. The gods have heard us. They bless our vision and our journey. We will honor their guidance and embark on this great adventure with their favor.
The crowd erupted in cheers, their faith renewed and their spirit's lifted. The ceremony continued with songs and dances, celebrating the divine blessing and the unity of their people. Tlaloc watched, feeling a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose. The gods had spoken through the flames, affirming their path.
As the day turned to night, the plaza remained alive with celebration. The stars began to appear, twinkling like distant guides. Tlaloc stood among his people, feeling the connection between them and the divine. The vision of the new land was no longer a distant dream; it was a destiny forged by their faith and unity.
The journey ahead would be fraught with challenges, but with the gods' blessing, they would face it with courage and determination. The night sky, filled with countless stars, seemed to promise a future as vast and bright as the heavens themselves.

The moon hung high in the night sky, casting a silver glow over the tranquil waters of Lake Texcoco. Tlaloc stood at the edge of the palace terrace, deep in thought. The day's ceremony had reaffirmed his resolve, and the gods' blessing filled him with a sense of purpose. Yet, the enormity of the task ahead weighed heavily on his mind. He knew that this journey would require more than divine favor; it would demand unity, strength, and unwavering commitment from all the nations of their great land.
A soft rustling of robes signaled the approach of High Priest Quetzalcoatl, who joined Tlaloc on the terrace. Chief Tlaloc,
he began, his voice a calm whisper, the gods have shown us the way, but it is up to us to walk the path. What are your thoughts on our next steps?
Tlaloc turned to face the high priest, his eyes reflecting the light of the moon. We must embark on this voyage, Quetzalcoatl. The vision is clear, and the gods' favor is with us. But we cannot do this alone. We need allies—strong, wise, and skilled. I will travel to the Iroquois Confederacy first. Their wisdom and unity are unparalleled. If we can gain their support, others will follow.
Quetzalcoatl nodded, his expression thoughtful. The Iroquois are indeed a powerful and respected nation. Shaman Aiyana's knowledge of healing and the natural world would be invaluable on such a journey. But convincing them will not be easy. They are cautious by nature.
Tlaloc smiled, a determined glint in his eyes. Caution is wise, but so is vision. I will speak to them with the same conviction that the gods have instilled in me. They will see the potential for greatness, for all our peoples.
The following morning, Tlaloc and his trusted advisors gathered in the grand hall, the sunlight streaming through the intricately carved windows. Maps and star charts were spread across the massive table, symbols of the journey that lay ahead.
Itztli, Xochitl,
Tlaloc addressed his advisors, we must prepare for the journey to the Iroquois lands. Itztli, your knowledge of strategy and warfare will be crucial in convincing them of our strength. Xochitl, your diplomatic skills will help forge the bonds we need.
Itztli, ever the warrior, clenched his fist over his heart. I will ensure they see our might, Chief Tlaloc. We will show them that this alliance will bring not only prosperity but also protection.
Xochitl, with her sharp intellect and eloquent speech, nodded in agreement. We will present a united front, demonstrating that this voyage is not just an Aztec endeavor but a mission for the future of all our nations.
As they discussed their plans, a young messenger entered the hall, bowing deeply before speaking. Chief Tlaloc, there is a delegation from the Maya civilization here to see you. They have heard of your vision and wish to offer their support.
Tlaloc exchanged a surprised but pleased look with Quetzalcoatl. Send them in,
he instructed, curiosity piqued.
A group of Maya envoys, led by a dignified elder named Pakal, entered the hall. Pakal's eyes sparkled with wisdom, and he carried himself with the grace of one who had spent a lifetime studying the stars.
Chief Tlaloc,
Pakal began, we have heard of your vision and the gods' blessing. The Maya wish to join you on this journey. Our knowledge of astronomy and navigation will be of great benefit.
Tlaloc stepped forward, clasping Pakal's forearm in a gesture of solidarity. Your support honors us, Pakal. Together, we will navigate the seas and discover the new lands that await us.
The room buzzed with a renewed sense of purpose as the Maya envoys shared their knowledge and resources. Plans were drawn, strategies discussed, and alliances forged. The journey that had once seemed like a distant dream was now becoming a tangible reality.
As night fell once more, Tlaloc stood again on the palace terrace, gazing at the stars. The constellation of the feathered serpent glimmered above, a constant reminder of the divine guidance they had received. The path was clear, the allies were gathering, and the journey was set in motion.
With the gods' blessing and the unity of their people, Tlaloc felt a deep sense of determination. They would cross the vast ocean, discover new lands, and create a legacy that would be remembered for generations to come. The journey was no longer just a vision; it was their destiny.
Chapter 1
Gathering the Coalition
The sun had barely risen, casting long shadows over the verdant landscape as Chief Tlaloc and his entourage set out from Tenochtitlan. Their journey to the Iroquois Confederacy was long and fraught with the unknown, but Tlaloc's resolve was unwavering. The air was crisp with the scent of pine and earth as they navigated the dense forests and wide rivers that lay between them and their northern allies.
Tlaloc rode at the head of the group, his thoughts occupied with the impending meeting. The Iroquois were known for their wisdom and their powerful council. Convincing them to join the grand voyage would not be easy, but Tlaloc trusted in the gods' guidance and his own determination.
After days of travel, they approached the lands of the Iroquois. The dense trees gave way to well-tended fields and longhouses that stood as symbols of the Confederacy's unity and strength. Tlaloc could see children playing and elders weaving baskets, a picture of a community in harmony with it's surroundings.
