Chapter 1: A Brief History
The Origins of the Nobel Prize
The origin of the Nobel Prize is rooted in the complex personality of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish chemist, engineer, and inventor who amassed a vast fortune from his 355 patents. Nobel’s most famous invention, dynamite, revolutionized the construction and mining industries. However, the potential for its use in warfare led to a deep sense of guilt for Nobel, culminating in an event that would transform his legacy. In 1888, a French newspaper published a premature obituary titled The Merchant of Death is Dead,
referring to Nobel. This obituary, intended for his brother, shook Nobel to his core, making him reflect on how his life would be remembered.
Nobel did not wish to be remembered for his inventions alone—especially those with destructive potential. In 1895, less than a year before his death, he signed his will at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris. This will dedicated the majority of his fortune to establishing five prizes in the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Peace, each awarded to individuals or organizations who had provided the greatest benefit to humanity.
In 1968, the Sveriges Riksbank established the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, broadening the reach of the
