Preface
How can succession planning be established and managed in organizational settings? That question has provoked much thought among business leaders, government leaders, and nonprofit administrators. Many employers face talent shortages and are also experiencing an exodus of baby boomers from workplace settings. Those issues, combined with the effects of a recent pandemic, have many employers scrambling to prepare successors for the future.
In previous books, William J. Rothwell has explored what organizations should do to establish a foundation for succession planning, what managers should do to develop successors on a daily basis, and what organizations should do to transfer knowledge or fully engage workers.
The Purpose of the Book
This book is meant to be combined with texts that describe how to implement succession planning programs. This book can then be used in executive or management training and/or in college classrooms to support the exploration of succession planning through hands-on experiential learning. It relies on a fictional frame to do that, describing a story about an organization going through the process of establishing and maintaining an effective succession planning program. This book then permits readers to go beyond merely reading the story to answering thought-provoking questions about succession issues in the case story and role-playing the case story sessions. If the role plays are conducted properly, readers will have ample opportunities over the sessions to play both organizational managers and consultants confronting typical challenges in setting up and implementing a systematic succession planning program.
The Target Audience for the Book
This book is written for anyone who has an interest in succession planning. That would include:
•CEOs/ Senior or Middle managers
•HR executives & professionals
