    Hockey Hellion - Kat Obie

    Chapter 1

    Sabrina

Coming home from college over the Christmas holidays should have been a breeze. No schoolwork. I didn't have to worry about any team commitments other than keeping my fitness levels up. I’d get to catch up with old friends from high school, since we’d all scattered to different universities or were working towards their life goals. In many ways, that's exactly what I would do. But there were two things that I hated about the Christmas holiday: the freezing cold weather and, stupidly, annoying Gavin Corso.

Waking up late that day, I threw my hair into a messy bun and walked downstairs to see about some breakfast. I was surprised to see my brother's SUV in the driveway. Shaking my head, I headed into the kitchen.

Unsurprisingly, Klaus stood at the kitchen island eating vegetables and watching hockey on his iPad. He'd been addicted to hockey his whole life. Then again, that was probably a good thing, since he was one of the captains for the Cleveland Sound.

What are you doing here, K? Don't you have food at your house?

He just laughed and said, Of course I have food at my place. Maybe, I wanted to spend time with my favorite sister?

I was so close to saying 'that's because I'm your only sister,' but that wasn't true. He technically has two half-sisters. It was weird because I'd had very little contact with his half-siblings over the years. They lived in Columbus, which was about two hours away, so we should have been close, but our families weren't blended.

I poked my head into the fridge and saw that my dad hadn’t polished off the last of the pizza. I pulled out the box. Pushing myself up onto the countertop across from K, I pulled out a slice of pizza and started to munch on it.

So, are you ready to go back to school? Klaus stared at the slice of pizza in my hand. He adored pizza when we were growing up. But, as he started to focus on chasing after dad's NHL records, he gave up pizza. He kept it lean, mean, and high in protein.

Not even close. It's nice not having to worry about balancing term papers and practice.

Despite being six and a half years apart in age, we were pretty close. He said, I figured I could take you to the mall today.

That was actually a great idea. Not hanging out with Alex?

I half expected him to be hanging out with her. He'd had a crush on her since, like, forever but only seemed to make a move at Halloween. They were practically inseparable.

No. Even if she was in town, I wouldn't want to. She'll want to know what I got her for Valentines way too much.

I laughed. He was right—Alex hated not knowing something and would be inquisitive. Alex and I were friends since we’d been in the same class at school until Alex started homeschooling so she could focus on her skating career. Add in the fact that our dads were best friends and we spent a lot of time together. Well, that was when she wasn't hanging out with Klaus solo. Are you sure you want to go shopping instead of the usual pre-game routine?

Yeah. But if we get close on time, would you mind if we headed straight to the game?

I shrugged; it didn't seem like a big deal. It wasn’t like I hadn't seen him play a thousand times before. Let me grab stuff from upstairs.

I didn't wait for him to acknowledge me. Instead, I hopped off the counter and headed up to my room. I grabbed my purse and my phone. I slung on a pair of chucks for the day and a winter coat.

The two of us headed out towards his SUV. As Klaus pulled out of the driveway, I asked, So, what's weirder: getting coached by Uncle Scotty or playing with Gavin?

Klaus didn't even hesitate. Playing with Gavin. I love playing for Scotty. I’ve learned so much from him. That's been a dream. Gavin, on the other hand, is, well... He's a punk who needs to learn his lane.

His answer didn't surprise me. He loved Scotty, and those two would talk hockey a lot over the holidays. It did die down some when Klaus played for New York, since they were technically on enemy teams. Nor was I surprised he called Gavin Corso a punk. I had the same opinion.

    Gavin

I had a good feeling that tonight's game was going to be a good one. Game days were fun. It was always easy pickings to find puck bunnies for after the game. So, win or lose, I still scored.

Scoring always made up for the fact that I was no longer in California. Getting traded back to Cleveland and playing for my dad's old team was annoying. I’d had a good thing in San Jose. I wasn't in the shadow of anyone, and I could make a name for myself without having people compare me to either my dad or the sons of the other Sound legends.

Getting out of my truck at the rink, I immediately saw Klaus and his sister. I smiled to myself. Sabrina had such a sweet ass. Not that I could ever touch her. Just like Alex Wheiland and Lily Peterson were off limits.

My dad gave me an earful when I drunkenly hit on Alex at my draft day party. If I could have done something differently that day, I wouldn’t have hit on Alex. She never did it for me. I would have hit on Sabrina, with her toned body from years of playing soccer and dark blonde hair like the rest of her family. The two of us used to hang out a lot when we were kids. But once we hit middle school, she stopped giving me the time of day.

Yo, Lagers. They turned together although only one of them rolled their eyes. Pretending that she hadn’t just done that, I went up to them. What are you doing here, Sabrina?

Going to watch you guys play tonight.

I smiled. While I knew she was there for her brother, I liked knowing she was going to watch me play. I just needed to break through her icy cold exterior.

The three of us walked into the rink. Sabrina went over to the family lounge. She looked over her shoulder and said, Skate hard and shoot harder. It was something we’d always said to tease each other. It was even funnier to
