General Facts
The Legend of Zelda is a fantasy action-adventure video game series owned and published primarily by Nintendo; it’s often considered one of the best video game series of all time.
The original Legend of Zelda game was released on February 21st, 1986. This makes it one of Nintendo’s oldest IPs and one of the longest-running franchises in gaming history.
Since its conception, the series has focused on the many incarnations of Link and Princess Zelda as they fight to save the land of Hyrule from Ganon, the recurring antagonist of the series.
At the time of writing, there have been nineteen entries in the main series of Legend of Zelda video games.
The Legend of Zelda has had a main series entry appear on all of Nintendo’s major game consoles since the first game.
A collector’s book called the Hyrule Historia is a 276-page volume that was released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the series. It includes detailed information covering subjects such as the main games and artwork throughout the series’ history; it also includes a canonical timeline of all the games and their events.
Though it received a generally positive reception in Japan, there was some doubt that the original game would see the same success in America due to its difficulty. Worried that Americans wouldn’t have the patience to for such a complex game, Nintendo established a free-of-charge hotline players could call to help them progress.
