About this ebook

When Kaitlyn visits Ascot, it's usually to share high tea with her best friend, not to share her body with a man she doesn't know… or does she?

Jamie Phiffer is the President of a company, a very wealthy man indeed - not someone who typically follows an ex-colleague to an event he knows nothing about.  What starts as an opportunity to reconnect with a former colleague he respects and admires, turns into something well beyond the wildest of fantasies.

Kait may be willing to give over her body to move forward in her life, but can she give over what is truly at stake – her heart.

    CHAPTER 1

    Three years?

Monica kept any surprise or admonishment well-hidden to avoid hurting Kaitlyn’s feelings, puffing out a breath that ruffled her perfectly set black bob. It had been three years since Jonathon had passed, and she knew Kaitlyn still hurt at the loss of her true love; but even though no one would ever replace him, it didn’t mean she had to live the life of a spinster either.

It seemed Kaitlyn had come to the same conclusion.

Are you sure this is what you want?

It was a rather big leap from abstinence to what Kait had just suggested.

I want to feel alive again as a woman Mon, I just don’t want the relationship that goes with it. God, the thought of online dating - I wouldn’t know where to start. Making small talk with someone you see no future with, trying to be attractive, being rejected. I’m too old for that stuff.

"Firstly you are not old, and how often have I wanted your killer figure!"

Oh come on, you’re just trying to make me feel better.

Kait wasn’t blind to the fact that she lacked the lush curves and exotic beauty of her striking best friend.

You are! Besides you’re also intelligent, highly successful, caring - no man is going to reject you! But I get that the dating scene is daunting. Why not get a courtesan?

Monica was entirely serious and Kait let out a hearty laugh.

…. ah Mon…. I’m not really into girls.

Not girls! A male courtesan, a gigolo, a man for a night – you know? she waggled her eyebrows.

I thought about that. It just doesn’t seem all that safe, being alone with a stranger in some hotel…what if he’s a serial killer or something? I don’t think so.

Okay, look, if you’re sure this is what you really want, I’ll make it happen for you - but you can change your mind at any time, no pressure.

Thanks Mon. Even if it’s a monumental fail, at least I can say I lived out one of my fantasies right?

Monica winked and raised her glass in a toast.

To a woman who knows what she wants.

    ***

It had been a shitty day at work and Jamie didn’t have too many of those. As President of a billion-dollar business, Jamie Phiffer was on the top of his game and his career. Today things had slid sideways.

He was in the middle of divesting an asset in Asia and the government had stepped in with a corrupt curveball threatening to forcibly hold some of his employees hostage.

Jamie always played a straight bat – safety of his people came first, the commercials would have to take a back seat. An increasingly unpredictable government was one of the reasons that the project was no longer viable with too much reputation risk for the type of public company he led.

Ah, separation was never easy. God knows it hadn’t been easy when his wife Deb had left either. As President he was skilled at fixing any multitude of problems that came along. In business it was true, and in a marriage that had lasted more than twenty years it was also mostly true – until it wasn’t. Until Deb filed for divorce after the kids left home, and the final thread of their relationship unravelled.

It had hurt like a sonofabitch, and despite his loyalty, there was no logic in forcing someone to be in love with him when that time had clearly passed.

It was days like these when he wished he was coming home to someone to talk to, share with.

Instead he would be coming home to a big architecturally built home with its vaulted ceilings and four bedrooms, tonight all of which would be empty.

It had been Deb’s dream house, and in truth he would have preferred something smaller, less expensive, more humble. Despite being a millionaire a few times over, he had never been motivated by expensive trappings. Perhaps it was from growing up in a small rural town, or that his parents instilled early on that money didn’t buy happiness. Jamie was as comfortable in his beat-up old campervan as flying first class. He had agreed to buy the home because the size had made sense as their children grew up. Besides, being the eldest of four siblings himself, he also had a large extended family, and when their respective tribes came to visit, the house could accommodate all the fun and good-hearted mayhem that inevitably ensued. He’d hoped a new generation of Phiffers would someday fill the home again with laughter, even if it was too empty for his liking right now.

Jamie closed his laptop, stowed it in his briefcase, and retrieved his jacket before crossing the street headed towards the train station. It was now 6.30pm and the mania of peak hour traffic had long since slowed to a more leisurely pace.

By this time, most office workers had left for home, but the city would come alive again later with an eclectic mix of restaurants and bars that overlooked the river. Unless it was for one of the many conferences at which he was guest speaker, or a business deal he was looking to strike with clients over an obligatory dinner, Jamie was usually home by now. It was a habit from when the kids were younger. His role demanded plenty of travel, and as a result, when he was in his home city, he was sure to leave the office at five o’clock to catch the train and be at the house by five thirty. He could always reboot the computer after the kids were in bed.

    Jamie didn’t deny enjoying work.

He had built a leadership team whose combined skill was as energising as their differing personalities.

His Professional Services executive - Lori Prince - was a talented woman and consummate professional for whom he was constantly warding off advances from his competitors. Thankfully she was committed; as was CFO Gideon Zielt, whose commanding leadership presence was matched only by his formidable ability to negotiate any deal to his will. Then there was his Production leader Brandt Colson whose reputation as a maverick was balanced with being one of the coolest people Jamie knew under pressure; and there was always pressure, especially when Brandt commanded 80% of the workforce and the company’s production across multiple geographies.

Yet amongst these amazing people, Jamie still missed having a role on his team who understood his true self, beyond his title and position, like
