About this ebook

A failed blind date turns into the start of an unexpected connection.

Since her divorce four years before, love hasn't been in the cards for Olivia Fernández. She focuses on work, her children, and the occasional fleeting encounter that never becomes more. The last thing she wants for Valentine's Day is to be set up on yet another date that will end with her bed warm but her heart as lonely as ever.

Canceling the date arranged by her nosy friends should be simple and the end of any interaction with Isabela Santamaría, CEO of Santamaría Media. Except, life insists on putting Isabela on Olivia's path and she can't deny her attraction and the easy connection they share.

Not falling for the woman she initially rejected becomes harder than expected the more time they spend together and explore their chemistry in bed. Will passion turn into love for Olivia and Isabela?

Tell Me What You Want is a steamy standalone novella in the Talk to Me series.

    The Set Up

Olivia parked her car in the driveway of the white, modern, two-story house that used to be her home. It’d been four years since the divorce, but she still felt a pang of nostalgia for the life she’d lost.

She’d reached a good point in her relationship with Sabine once most of their wounds healed. They became best friends and had the art of co-parenting down to a science, but she couldn’t help feeling a small pang of sadness once in a while. Sabine kept their house, the kids lived with her, and she also had a brand new wife. Olivia lived alone in a very nice bachelor loft that after four years still didn’t feel like a home, and she shared her nights with a string of flings that never lasted more than three months.

A long time ago, she stopped believing she would find romantic love again. But that was okay. The love of her kids was all she needed. Or at least, that’s what she told herself. Olivia plastered a big grin on her face before turning the key in the lock.

Hey, hey, hey! she shouted, walking inside.

When all eyes turned in her direction, her rehearsed grin morphed into a genuine smile. It wasn’t a perfect situation, but the four people scrambling around in front of her were her family.

At the dining room table, her kids alternated between applying the finishing touches to their homework and stuffing their mouths with food. Sabine came out of the kitchen with four plates full of French toast balanced precariously in her hands and almost ran into Olivia in her rush to get to the table before her balance failed her. Olivia took two plates off her hands and placed a kiss on each of Sabine’s cheeks.

French toast? So elaborate for a Wednesday.

Lara woke up in one of her cooking moods, Sabine replied, placing the plate in front of Denna, their oldest daughter.

Olivia kissed Denna’s forehead. Hey, sweetie. At twelve, Denna was in that limbo of looking like a teenager, but being way too young for Olivia to see her as anything else but her little kid.

Hey Mom, she answered, still chewing.

Olivia moved to Caleb and repeated the action. He smiled brightly at her with his mouth so full of food he looked like a chipmunk. She couldn’t help but laugh, aware he wouldn’t be that cute and innocent for much longer. It felt like yesterday they were only babies and now, Denna was already in middle school, and her baby boy was a few inches away from being taller than her. Maybe that was an exaggeration, even if she was five-foot-one on a good day. But he was no longer her baby.

Do you want some French toast? Lara called from the kitchen.

I’m good, thank you, Olivia answered, raising her hand to show the cup of matcha tea she’d bought on her drive there. She walked to the kitchen to greet the other woman with her customary two kisses, but stopped short when she noticed the disarray of pastries and ingredients all over the counter.

Are those scones in the oven?

You know I stress bake, Lara answered with a sigh. There’re rumors going around of the high-ups wanting to close Purple Magazine. I know we’re not the most profitable product right now, but I’ve worked for that magazine for almost my entire professional life. I don’t know what I would do if it ended.

You’re a star. There would be networks and magazines fighting for you in a heartbeat.

From the other side of the room, Sabine raised her hands in the air. That’s what I keep telling her!

Besides, Purple Magazine is a staple. They would be nuts to close it. Olivia gave Lara’s shoulder a quick reassuring squeeze.

Yeah, yeah… I doubt they care about my job as editor or the legacy of the magazine. Money talks. At least I have an ally high up that hopefully will help, Lara replied. Changing topics, she said, eyes lighting up in expectation. Do you have plans for Valentine’s Day?

Olivia chuckled. It should feel weirder to have her ex-wife’s new wife so invested in her love life, but she was used to it and, to be honest, Lara had become one of her best friends, too. It wasn’t always that way. She hated her guts at first and resented her for taking her place in Sabine’s life a few months after they’d separated. Back then, she’d expected her to be gone after a couple of months, but after a while she had no choice but to accept that Lara made Sabine happy, and she was there to stay.

Their first outings together were so awkward, but now she was proud to call Lara a friend, even if her tendency to meddle and want to set everyone up could get annoying.

No, no plans, Olivia answered, taking a sip of her tea. I can take the kids so you two can have a date night.

Oh, no, no, no. That’s not why I’m asking.

Olivia had a hunch, but she’d hoped her veiled attempt at redirecting the conversation was enough to talk Lara out of whatever idea danced in her mind. Of course, she knew her enough to realize how determined Lara was once she had a goal. Unfortunately for her, usually her plans involved setting Olivia up with any woman that crossed her path. The mention of St. Valentine’s was a big red heart-shaped flag.

    Lara, I’m not interested.

Oh, come on! I haven’t even told you about her. I swear this one is perfect for you.

Olivia threw an exasperated look in Sabine’s direction, hoping the mother of her kids would take mercy on her and help her distract Lara. But her ex-wife shrugged.

Caleb, Denna. Go get your backpacks. We should get going, she said. It was true, but also, she wasn’t beyond using her kids to get away from a situation. They could survive an extra ten minutes waiting at the school if they arrived too early.

She waited until the sound of their stretching sneakers disappeared to turn around toward Lara again.

That gallery owner you set me up with last time went up in flames after three dates and one good, but empty, night of sex, she said between her teeth, glancing down the corridor in case the kids came back. No one you’ve ever set me up with works out and honestly, I’ve just accepted the fact falling in love is just not gonna happen for me again. The last thing I need is to have a blind date for St. Valentine’s that will lead nowhere. So no, don’t even think about it and I’m not changing my mind.

Lara opened her mouth, surely to protest and argue, but the kids coming back derailed her. Olivia took the chance to leave. As she walked out with the kids, she mouthed, No, I mean it, with her most threatening face.

Olivia’s phone pinged several times while she drove to the office, but she ignored it until she settled at her desk and finished her tea. She had a hunch it was probably Lara, and she didn’t want to deal with her. But she was wrong. It was Sabine.

    I’m sorry. Sent at 9:05 a.m.

Lara already kind of set up your Valentine’s date :/ Sent at 9:06 a.m.

Isabela sounds great. Sent at 9:11 a.m. Here’s her phone number. Sent at 9:12 a.m. If you don’t want to meet her, I’ll force Lara to cancel it, but you should give her a chance. Sent at 9:15 a.m.

Fucking Lara. Of course, she’d already set everything up and now Olivia would look like a jerk if she canceled a Valentine’s Day date.

She put her phone away without answering back. She’d deal with her love life problems later. First she had a 2.5-million-dollar condo contract ready to be sent to her client, and that took priority.

Ten hours, three showings, and two signed contracts later, Olivia settled on her couch with a plate of takeout from her favorite Lebanese restaurant, and a glass of wine. Between bites, she grabbed her phone and stared at the string of messages she’d pretended to ignore all day, but had been in the back of her mind while she worked and went about her day.

Isabela Santamaría. That was the name of the woman Lara was trying to set her up with. The name sounded vaguely familiar, but she didn’t dwell on it. Lara knew so many people thanks to her job it was hard to keep up with her circle of friends.

She was canceling the date. There was no way she was going. She didn’t even go out for Valentine’s Day when she was in an actual relationship. Dealing with traffic to reach an overcrowded and overpriced restaurant was the furthest thing from romantic she could think of. Besides, if she backed down and showed up to this date, then there would be no way on earth to stop Lara from setting her up again. She needed to put her foot down.

Siri, Google Isabela Santamaría, she said.

No harm in finding out more information. For all she knew, Lara was forcing Isabela to do this, too, and Olivia would do her a favor by canceling. That didn’t mean she couldn’t satiate her curiosity first.

Soon her phone showed a string of results. From news reports to magazine articles.

Isabela Santamaría named new CEO of Santamaría Media, read the first search result. Interesting. Now she knew why she recognized the name. That was the media company that owned Lara’s magazine. She had to
