The Story of Hip Hop - Matt Anniss

    BLOCK PARTY ROOTS

Hip-hop is now one of the best-loved musical styles on the planet, and a multimillion dollar industry. Yet it wasn’t always this way. In musical terms, hip-hop is a relatively recent development.

    Bronx party

The roots of hip-hop lie in the Bronx, a poor area of New York City. There, in the 1970s, a performer called DJ Kool Herc started throwing illegal street parties, known as ‘block parties’.

    Kool like Hercules

At these block parties, DJ Kool Herc would play popular soul, disco, funk and rock songs of the time. The parties were popular with local teenagers, who would gather to have dancing contests, known as ‘battles’.

    The origins of mixing

DJ Kool Herc noticed that dancers would respond more favourably to the sections of songs featuring heavy beats. He went away and developed a way of quickly ‘mixing’ between the breakbeats on popular records by artists such as James Brown and Chic.

DJ KOOL HERC THREW THE FIRST EVER HIP-HOP BLOCK PARTIES OUTSIDE THIS BUILDING ON SEDGWICK AVENUE IN THE BRONX, NEW YORK.

    POPULAR STYLE

Other DJs soon started copying Kool Herc’s style. At block parties across New York, DJs would put on seamless performances, extending popular drumbeats using two vinyl turntables and a basic DJ mixer.

    On the microphone

To add something extra to his performances, DJ Kool Herc began reciting short verses of poetry over the beats. This was inspired by music sound system ‘deejays’ in Jamaica, who would speak or sing over the records they played.

MANY TEENAGERS AT EARLY HIP-HOP BLOCK PARTIES SHOWED OFF BY PULLING THEIR OWN UNIQUE DANCE MOVES, CALLED ‘BREAKDANCING’.
