About the Author
Developing leadership potential is essential for making one’s mark on the world. However, busy professionals do not always have time for leadership retreats or to read extensively about leadership. Even when they manage to attend retreats or read books, the topics covered are often narrow, offering only partial insight into how to hone leadership skills. To address these problems, this short book provides a quick yet comprehensive treatment of leadership, including practical tips that readers can use to make a difference in their lives and workplaces today. By working their way through the alphabet letter by letter, readers can explore all the traits and skills needed to become a leader and advance the causes that are important to them.
The structure of this book emerged over many decades of experience. While serving in corporate and community leadership roles, I realized that I could capture the description of leadership using the alphabet. Just as the alphabet forms the backbone of written language, so leadership provides the bedrock for effective and efficient organizations of all sorts. In addition, like the alphabet, the elements of leadership, from concept to application, are elegant in their simplicity. In moving through the alphabet, it is interesting to see how leadership-related words are so interconnected, weaving into one another effortlessly!
I hope that every reader will recognize and nurture the leader that lies within themself. Every day, we see news of great people leading nations, corporations, churches, communities, initiatives, and movements. We emulate their attributes and leadership styles and wonder if we, too, could rise to the occasion. This book’s central message is that yes, each of us can, in our own way. However, we must first recognize that we are all both leaders and followers, and we must endeavor to fill both roles as best we can. As entrepreneur Malcolm Forbes said, No one is a leader if there are no followers.
Indeed, leaders are only as strong as their followers (or teams) make them. Conversely, leaders drive the culture, motivation, and outcomes of the teams they lead. Therefore, this book emphasizes team dynamics and outcomes as an essential component of leadership, placing a strong focus on relationships.
Leadership has many definitions, descriptions, theories, and categorizations, but all incorporate an appreciation of human attributes, behaviors, and characters: the ABCs of leadership. How do leaders harness this appreciation to motivate individuals to commit to a cause and achieve a goal together? By being appealing, bold, and charismatic. Some individuals are deemed born leaders,
exhibiting from birth the strength of character that breeds affection and commands respect. When they speak, people listen and believe what they say. These individuals can seemingly effortlessly
