About this ebook

Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz, one of Golf Magazine's best coaches and bestselling author, reveals here Volume 1 of his revolutionary method to improve your golf game without making any changes to your swing, whatever your skill level, in three steps: before, during and after the round.
Six-time European Tour and Ryder Cup winner Thomas Levet says: "This step-by-step method gives you simple and easily applicable keys on the golf course and will help you drastically improve your game, gain confidence and consistency, without having to work on your technique!”
Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz starts from a simple statement: “The game of golf is a paradox. You have to work on your technique when training but learn to break away from it to use your true potential on the golf course."
Each volume of the "Golf without Technique" collection can be read separately.

Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz

Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz's professional career may seem surprising: from jazz musician, he became a golf coach! You're probably wondering how you go from being a musician to a golf coach?According to Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz, golf and music have a lot in common. He explains:"If I had not been a musician, I would never have come up with this coaching method. You probably find it normal for a musician to work on his scales in order to progress technically and that he no longer works on scales when he plays a tune at home or on stage? It makes sense. If he doesn't work on his scales, he can't progress technically and if he keeps thinking about technique while playing, he can't be creative and can't perform effectively. This is exactly the same for the golfer! When I started golf at the age of 24, I realized that this idea was not often followed by golfers. They never stop thinking about their technique on the golf course, by mentally breaking down their swing. Obviously, this doesn't work.I found that professional players who benefit from mental training in addition to their technical training, progress faster and show better results. I then became interested in mental training techniques in sport and followed a mental coaching training program. At the age of 30, I created and taught "Golf without technique", an original and unprecedented method of golf instruction with one major objective: to allow all golfers to reach their full potential without the need of additional work on their technique."For over 20 years, players who have used this method, from beginners to great champions, have applauded this method: simple goals, easy to apply on the golf course, giving the player the ability to play more consistently in a very short time, without making big changes to his swing!Thomas Levet, six-time winner on the European Tour and Ryder Cup champion says: "Thanks to this method, you will become better golfers without having to hit a single ball on the driving range. If it works for us, the Tour Players, it will work for you too!"At 38, Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz became a PGA Pro member and completed his coaching with teaching techniques as well.A few years later, he decided to make his golf method available to the largest number of people by developing an application for iPhone and Android called "15 Minute Golf Coach."You can download 15 minute Golf Coach app for free on the App Store (iOS) and on the Play Store (Android).Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz has worked with thousands of golfers. He tells us how he succeeded in helping them reach their goals:"My main concern is that players get results as quickly and easily as possible. To achieve this, they must always keep in mind what a golfer has to do to perform well: work on technique while training and then forget it almost completely on the golf course. Just like a musician does."

    Preface

    Dear golfing friends,

I hope you enjoy reading Golf without Technique as much as I did.

Whatever your skill level, you will surely find many tips that will help you progress, whether in your training sessions, on the golf course or in your competitions.

Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz will give you the tools to help you develop a good attitude on the golf course.

I have always found it interesting to read about and learn the different methods and tricks from the greatest golf coaches, but unfortunately, very few of them address the question of the mental game in golf.

Technique is important, of course, but without a good mindset and a good game strategy, the best techniques in the world will never win a tournament.

When I won the French Open in 2011, everyone told me: Congratulations, you played great! That's true. I can assure you that I played much better technically in previous editions, but I wasn’t thinking clearly enough, and I wasn't aggressive or defensive at the right time. During the whole week of the 2011 French Open, everything was clear in my mind!

The irony is that I may have won the tournament thanks to a double bogey on the 18th hole on day three. Let me tell you what was going through my mind at that time.

I'm on the tee of the 18th hole at -6, 2 points behind the leaders. I'm living a dream round: I'm very accurate and I miss very few shots, until that drive that took off almost between my legs towards the water! At that point, I'm really worked up, but it didn’t last more than ten seconds. I knew all the players would have trouble here. Then I had to play a ball from the rough and fly over the water, against the wind, to reach the green which was 215 yards away. It was a 235-240 yards shot.

Twenty years ago, I probably would have played this shot with a 3 wood to try and save the par. But was it the right time to play an aggressive shot? Was it really worth it? By hitting a 3 wood 240 yards, I had a 60% chance of landing in the water. So, my decision was to get the ball back in play with an 8-iron, then try to make 5 with a good wedge shot followed by a putt. By playing safe, I stayed in the race for the lead. I lost very little energy in the face of this difficult situation, and twenty-four hours later I lifted the trophy.

I hope this example will give you an understanding of the importance of the mindset in competition. If I hadn't learned from books and from great sports psychologists how to react under pressure, I probably wouldn't have had the chance to lift this trophy.

In all the clinics I give around the world, people in the audience often ask technical questions. It is true that a well struck shot towards the target is very satisfying. But how do you manage to make a shot like that with regularity? How do you do it again, as often as possible? What does a professional player think about before and during the swing?

I often give the example of a person who throws a paper into a waste bin. Most of the time, it works! Why does it work? Because you are relaxed. It's not important if you miss your target, and, unlike in golf, you don't ask yourself the trick questions: Am I lined up right? or Is my grip good? or Have I paid enough attention to the wind? Yes, I'm like you: I sometimes ask myself all these superfluous questions!

In Golf without Technique , Jean-Emmanuel Elbaz addresses most of the situations you will face on the golf course and gives you concrete solutions. Thanks to this method, you will become better golfers without having to hit a single ball on the driving range. It works for us, the Tour Players, it will also work for you.

Have a good read and most of all, good golf.

    Thomas Levet

    Foreword

Originally, nothing predestined me to become a golf coach. I am a trained jazz musician.

At the age of twenty-four, a musician friend of mine took me to a driving range. If you had told me at that time that I would become a golf coach, I would not have believed you, nor would my family and friends.

I liked the sport right away.

First of all I was attracted to the technical side of golf. Like all passionate golfers, I wanted to master the different techniques of the game.

I practiced a lot, alternating practice sessions with playing on the golf course from the very beginning.
