Prologue
So you would like to learn to sail a boat and speak sailoreese (I just made that word up), but you thought it might too be hard or all involved. Well, anything worth learning or doing does get a bit involved. Even with somewhat limited involvement with the language you can have fun and sail about like you really know all the sailor’s words and slang. The good news is that sailing is easier than driving a car, but the bad news is you have to read and follow this boorish text. Sorry about that!
First I recommend attaining a bit of information such as reading this and/or other books or even taking a course and/or gaining some practical on-board experience by accompanying someone on their boat. Other options include borrowing or buying your own boat, if you are serious. And it would also be very beneficial and reassuring if you invite an experienced sailor aboard your boat, borrowed or owned, on your first efforts at sailing.
But, and that is a very big but, I think I am giving you sufficient, but not overwhelming information and instruction to lead you through a self-initiated pleasurable sail. I have attempted to give you everything you will encounter on taking a sailboat out for a simple first experience sail including all points of sail that can be set up and practiced to become a proficient sailor.
I personally took several courses in college on navigation, seamanship, and sailing, and in some instances some topics in the sailing study seemed a bit like Greek to me. Then I bought a new twenty-two foot cabin sailboat that came with a commissioning and five one-hour lessons aboard. During the second time out with the instructor he said I no longer needed him and then he occasionally called on me to assist him, as a mate, in demonstrating other new sailboats for his company. The Greek parts suddenly made sense once I was aboard handling the sails and boat. So if you take this aboard and follow the text it will make more sense.
Of course I had been aboard boats all
