    Bedtime Story

It was pitch black outside as the storm washed over the entire town. Lightning crackled across the sky, and thunder rumbled throughout each and every household.

The triplets lay in their beds scared to death as their father tried his best to calm them down ….

Shhh. Stop crying children, everything’s okay. I’m here with you, said Jack. You don’t have to be afraid, it’s only rain. That’s easy for you to say, Daddy. You’re almost a hundred years old and we’re only four, said Eric.

Boy, I’m nowhere close to being a hundred, and my age has nothing to do with being afraid. I need ya’ll to be brave.

But Dad … I’m a girl. Can I be brave too? asked Alexis, with a curious look on her face.

Sure you can sweetie. Being brave is for everybody, explained Jack.

    Is Mama brave? asked Chris.

With a lifted eyebrow, Jack explained, Yes she is … as a matter of fact, your mama is one of the bravest women I know. He sat on the edge of Alexis’s bed. I tell ya what, why don’t I tell ya’ll a story to take your mind off the storm?

Yea! I love your stories, said Alexis.

Jack smiled. Okay, good. Here we go. Once upon a time in the Big Thicket Forest lived a colony of rabbits. One of the rabbits was a girl rabbit named Bonnie—

Hey, that’s Mama’s name! yelled Chris.

Yes it is, and one of the other rabbits’ name was Jack, just like mine. Anyway, one day they were playing tag in the forest and forgot to keep track of how far they went into the woods …,

You can’t catch me Jack! I’m too fast for ya Bunny Boy! said Bonnie.

You’re fast alright, I’ll admit that. But sooner or later you’re gonna get tired, Jack said laughing. And when you do, I’ll be right on your tail!

Keep dreaming Jack. I’m faster than lightning with the power of an Energizer battery, she replied.

Zigging and zagging from left to right, hopping over tree stumps and zipping through the grassy terrain, Bonnie was a force to be reckoned with. Most bunnies were fast, but Bonnie was faster, and she had put a considerable amount of distance between her and Jack. However, by the time her nose had picked up the strange scent of the hunters, it was too late. Click-clack was the sound of the trap door locking shut.

Yaaa-hoo! We got us another one boys, said the hunter. These new traps work wonders!

Aww Paw, thanks a lot, said Jr.

I mean it Jr., that’s one heck of a trap ya built. Whatcha think about it Peanut? asked Paw.

I guess it’s okay Paw, but what do you plan on doing with all those bunny rabbits?

Well, son, I was thinking about some old rabbit stew … unless you had something else in mind.

A look of horror appeared on Peanut’s face. You mean to tell me we’re gonna eat them?

That’s exactly what I’m saying little buddy. And guess what? Since it’s your first time hunting, I’ll even let ya help me clean ’em.

Jack had finally caught up and he could see Bonnie in a cage. But he could also see the hunters standing around her. He eased as close as he could without being noticed, trying his best to get her attention.

Peanut cried out, No! Why would you hurt the little bunnies, Paw?

Well son, it’s how we survive out here. We use these animals as food, Peanut.

But you have plenty of food! yelled Peanut.

I knew this was a bad idea Paw … I told you not to bring him, said Jr.

Don’t sass me Jr., now shut your pie-hole so I can try to explain this to ya little brother, said Paw. He leaned down to look Peanut in the eye. It’s simple son, you have a top and a bottom to the food chain, and the bunnies are a source of food for people, along with all the other wild critters we eat.

"It’s not fair Paw! Look at it, that bunny didn’t do anything to us, and I’m not hungry, so you
