Introduction

In my imagination anyway , haunted places are supposed to be dark and gloomy with an atmosphere that immediately has your hackles up and says ‘ haunted ’ to your subconscious. The problem with this supposition is that it is simply wrong. Anywhere may be haunted. As we will see, the prettiest of places, the most innocent of places, and the most unexpected places, can be filled with supernatural forces and pure demonic malevolence.

Whenever I move to a new place, which isn’t often, I cannot relax. I feel their presence and I see their shadows. It takes me time, along with some cleansing rituals to clear the space and make it mine. You see, I grew up in an ordinary house on an ordinary street and yet, I was plagued for years with poltergeist, ghosts, and other supernatural activity. It’s where my interest in all things supernatural got started. Anywhere and anything can be haunted and many people from all walks of life experience strange things in surprising locations.

To give you an example of how anywhere can be haunted, I visited a Castle outside of Prague a few years ago. It was a magnificent place full of busy tourists. People walked through the gardens, drank beer, and ate snacks in the Sun at the bistro, and generally were enjoying the atmosphere. Now the Castle has an attached Church and by the Church, a graveyard. The graveyard is full of the rich and famous of Prague’s past, authors, actors, politicians, and pop singers. People strolled through that graveyard examining the headstones and even photographing certain tombs. To me, however, there was an air of malevolence in that place. I shuddered upon entering and in my mind I could see the darkness there. One or two others perhaps detected it too, as when my eyes caught theirs, there seemed to be a shared recognition that something wasn’t right. The heaviness and despair I felt there followed me home and it took me several days to rid myself of that atmosphere. Of course, you may expect a graveyard to be haunted but let me tell you, that was an unusual and demonic presence that was unexpected on a sunny, warm day surrounded by tourists.

One of the first experiences of a ghost I had was in our house in a bedroom I shared with my brother. We lived in a typical, red-bricked, semi-detached house on the outskirts of the City of Hull. The house was probably built in the 1920s, and it had little or no history to make you think it could be haunted. My first impressions though were not good as it was cold and damp, with no central heating, gloomy, and the bare floorboards and strange old wallpapers made the place seem a bit dated.

It wasn’t long after moving in that my worst fears were confirmed. I shared a room with my brother and one night, I saw a white, ghostly figure sat close to where our desk was, scribbling away. It wore a broad-brimmed hat and was dressed like a Cavalier. I recall that we both watched in fear and amazement as the figure turned its head, disturbed, stood up, and then glided over and out through the wall. And that, believe me, was just the start of it!

One question that I have is what part does imagination and belief play in seeing ghosts? I have been accused of having a good imagination on many occasions and yet, in many instances my terrifying experiences were shared with others, as with the Cavalier that my brother also saw. I actually think imagination plays a role in susceptibility, as does belief. I think that we create much of our own reality and I think that this is done partly using the imaginative faculty and partly through the belief that it works. How many of us know someone who is rock solid in stating they don’t believe in ghosts, never sees ghosts, and stops any phenomena from occurring just by being present?

So, as you read this book, remember that it is entirely possible that you co-create your reality using imagination and faith.

Some of the stories presented in this book were submitted to my website – My Haunted Life Too - while others are summaries of haunted locations that I have visited or that interest me. The common denominator between the stories is simply that ordinary people can experience extraordinary events in very ordinary places. So beware.

Places of Beauty (On the Surface Anyway)

If there is one thing I adore to do these days, it is to take a walk in a leafy forest. Under a canopy of trees, in that mystical half-light, one can experience true peace.

One day, I took a walk in a valley in Prague 6 that gave me more than just peace and quiet. It was a beautiful autumn day, sunny and crisp. I was walking along with my dog - and then it happened. Leaves started to fall from the trees around me like a gentle shower and those leaves swirled around and around as they fell down all around me. I could also feel an energy developing in the vicinity. The back of my neck tingled, and I relaxed into that warm energy. The leaf rain moved on, and I followed it.

The funny thing was that the
