Wiccan Spell A Night - Sirona Knight

    Introduction:

    How to Use This Book

    E

ACH PAGE OF THIS MAGICAL RESOURCE

book provides hands-on instructions guaranteed to have you casting spells, making charms and potions, and meditating each and every night of the year. This book goes through the thirteen Wiccan moon cycles or Esbats that can occur within each year. Each night of the Esbat offers spells, potions, charms, and meditations for making your life magical.

Each Esbat begins on the full moon and lasts until the next full moon. Technically, a moon cycle lasts for 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds. Each Esbat has a magical name and innate qualities for making certain kinds of potions and spinning particular spells. For example, the Hare Moon is an especially fertile time, whereas the Snow Moon is the perfect time for freezing any negativity out of your life.

Begin this book on Night 1 of the Wolf Moon, the first full moon after the Winter Solstice (usually on December 21 or 22). If a full moon rises on December 24 in a given year, it would be first Esbat, called the Wolf Moon. The next full moon would be the Storm Moon, and the one after that the Chaste Moon. The sequence of full moons and corresponding Esbats continues until the next Winter Solstice, when the cycle begins again. Sometimes there are twelve full moons in a year and sometimes there are thirteen. It depends where the full moons fall within the year.

Night 1 of each Esbat begins on the full moon with a High Moon ritual. The waning moon occurs from the full moon to the dark moon and is the time when the light of the moon lessens. The waning moon is a good time to do spells dealing with healing, banishment, divination, and shape shifting. The tenth night of each Esbat has a ritual bath, the fifteenth night a dark moon spell, and the 16th night a new moon spell. The time between the new moon and the next full moon is the waxing moon. This time is good for spells that focus on love, sex, and prosperity

Because this book deals with spells that happen at night, it also often deals with magical techniques that utilize dreams. Instead of focusing on what your dreams mean, dream magic actively uses dreams as a means of moving your magical patterns forward. After all, dreams are the source of creativity. They are expressions of experiences that are seeking to become real. Step into the river of dreams and purposefully and actively use dreaming for making magic.

All magic begins with a strong intention and clear expectation of what it is you want. Knowing what you want and having a plan on how to get it is the foundation for any magical pattern or work. It gives focus to what you are doing. This focus is essential in the later steps when you use desire and merging to manifest your magic. These are the steps for conceiving, creating, and experiencing magic every day.

After you figure out what you want and formulate a plan on how to get it, then you need to take the actions steps to make it happen. The merging of divine and mind in order to influence reality forms the basis for all magic.

The deeper you merge when doing magic, the more powerful the results. Merging is the process of connecting to the divine no matter what your perception of it is. It is a natural feeling that you feel when you are in love, walking on the beach at sunset, or sitting next to an ancient redwood tree. Merging is the feeling you get when you are in tune and one with it all. The deepest merge you can make is with Oneness.

Oneness is everyone and everything, whatsoever it may be, whether animate or inanimate. By merging with Oneness when making magic, you reach into the source, commune with the divine, shape, and gather power for attaining your magical goals.

Merging may produce sensations of relaxation, peacefulness, well-being, complete calm, spinning, dizziness, flying, whirling, or heaviness. You may feel like you are floating as you feel yourself as everything and nothing at the same time.

You can enhance your merging experience by using rhythmic breathing, gazing at candlelight, dancing, and chanting, as well as listening to music, drumming, meditation, and visualization techniques. When you merge you become one with everything, diffusing like a cloud into the whole of Oneness.

When making magic, you need to integrate the ideal with the practical. This means putting your expectations into real time, and seeing how they play out—for better or worse. Try your magical goals on in your mind’s eye before manifesting them. It’s important to know what you want will work for you before you go out and make it happen, otherwise you might find yourself in a situation that is far from your liking. On the other hand, if you exercise a little focused thought, care, and wisdom, you can realize all of your dreams and truly enrich your life.

    Your Magic Altar

Your magic altar is a space that you create to hold your magical tools, focals, and other magical ingredients. This space becomes a connecting point between you and the divine. The word altar means high place because symbolically it is the Goddess’s sacred table. As such, your magic altar is a great place for doing spellcrafting, meditation, and prayer. When you stand in front of your altar with its candles and incense burning, you are immediately filled with a feeling of magic that becomes more powerful when spirit and divine become One.

Set your magic altar up on a flat surface that is large enough to accommodate your magical tools and any additional items for the night spells. When you draw your magic circle (see below), your altar should be located in the north point. Use an altar cloth, traditionally red or green, to protect the surface of your altar. You can also decorate it to reflect the various times of the year, such as flowers in spring, gourds in fall, and boughs of evergreen in winter. Everything you add to your altar accentuates your magical experience. Eventually you can expand your altar to include your entire home and property. As you become more adept at making magic, you will find that every thought, every act, every living being, and every object is sacred and thus part of your magic altar.

The magical tools you will need to set up your altar are:

    • Magical wand

    • Athame

    • Bowl

    • Chalice

    • Incense burner

    • Candle holder

    • Object representing the Goddess

    • Object representing the God

    • Your Wiccan Spell-a-Night Journal and pen

    The Magic Circle

Many of the night spells, particularly those involving rituals, ask you to draw a magic circle, call in the elements, and invite deity into your circle. The steps for drawing a magic circle are:

    1. Begin by clearing the area of unwanted energies. Do this by facing the north point, and slowly spin around in a clockwise circle with your arms stretched outward. While slowly spinning, imagine a clear cobalt blue light washing out the area. As you spin, say:

May all evil and foulness be gone from this place.

I ask this in the Lady and Lord’s name.

Be gone all evil and foulness,

    Be gone, now and forevermore!

    2. Hold your athame or wand in your power hand. Your power hand is the one you use to eat your food with. Point the tip of your athame or wand toward the north point of the space.

    3. Take a few deep and complete breaths to center yourself, and then merge with the divine for a minute or two.

    4. Visualize a stream of blue-white light pouring out of the tip of your athame or wand toward the north point.

    5. After building a sufficient amount of light and energy, with your athame pointing outward, begin to spin slowly to the east point, visualizing the blue-white light flowing from the tip of your athame or wand into the north point and along the parameter of the circle into the east point, filling it full of light.

    6. Imagine the light flowing from the east point into the south point and filling it with blue-white light.

    7. Once the south point is full of light, imagine the light moving along the circle into the west point, again filling it with blue-white light.

    8. Use your athame or wand to move the stream of light back along the parameter of the circle into the north point. This completes the body of your protective circle.

    9. Face the altar, and holding the athame with its tip upright, in your mind’s eye, visualize the vibrant, light-filled circle all around you, including above and below you, and say:

    The circle is bound

    With power all around

    In all worlds I stand

    Protected in all lands.

    Calling In the Elements

When you call in the elements, you are setting up a guardian at each of the elemental gates to protect your circle from unwanted energies and influences while you are doing magic. A different elemental guardian guards each of the directional gates of north, east, south, and west. They remain there until you release them. The steps for calling in the elements are:

    1. Face north in the direction of your altar, and stretch your arms upward toward the sky. Imagine that you are deep in the woods in a magical forest. Merge with the earth element, and say:

    Guardians of the north,

Generous and divine powers of earth,

Protect the gate of the north ward,

And guard this circle and all within.

    Come I welcome you!

    2. Now, turn and face eastward, and stretch your arms toward the sky. Imagine you are on a beautiful hillside with a strong but refreshing wind blowing over your face and through your hair. Merge with the air element, and say:

    Guardians of the east,

Generous and divine powers of air,

Protect the gate of the east ward,

And guard this circle and all within.

    Come I welcome you!

    3. Next, face south and stretch your arms toward the sky. Imagine yourself lying in the sun, soaking in its radiant warmth. Merge with the fire element, and say:

    Guardians of the south,

Generous and divine powers of fire,

Protect the gate of the south ward,

And guard this circle and all within.

    Come I welcome you!

    4. Face west and stretch your arms upward. Imagine you are sitting next to a pristine mountain lake, or if you prefer, by the ocean. Merging with the powers of water, say:

    Guardians of the west,

Generous and divine powers of water,

Protect the gate of the west ward,

And guard this circle and all within.

    Come I welcome you!

    5. Now, stand in the center of your magic circle, and facing your altar, say:

Guardian spirits of earth, air, fire, and water

Grant me your power and protection tonight

    Come I welcome you!

Once your have called in the elements to stand guard at the four gates, it is time to cast your magic spells, make magic charms and potions, and meditate.

    Cutting the Little Gate

If you need to leave the circle while you are making magic, simply cut an energetic doorway (called the little gate) with your athame or power hand. Cut the doorway by moving your athame upward, over toward the right, and then downward to the bottom-right corner. Then exit, making sure you seal the doorway with your athame. Reverse the process to get back in the circle. When possible, cut the doorway at the physical door, so you can easily come and go.

    Bidding Farewell to the Elements

When you are finished making magic, bid farewell to the elements. Follow these five easy steps:

    1. Begin at the north point, merge with the powers of earth, and say:

Generous and divine powers of earth,

Please depart in peace and harmony

Many thanks for your magical presence.

    2. Then face east, and say:

Generous and divine powers of air,

Please depart in peace and harmony

Many thanks for your magical presence.

    3. Next, face south, and say:

Generous and divine powers of fire,

Please depart in peace and harmony

Many thanks for your magical presence.

    4. Now face west, and say:

Generous and divine powers of water,

Please depart in peace and harmony

Many thanks for your magical presence.

    5. Now face your altar, and say:

    Dear Goddess and God

    Helpful spirits and energies

Many thanks for your divine presence

Blessed be! Blessed be! Blessed be!

    Pulling Up the Circle

Once you draw a magic circle, you do not usually leave it until you pull it up. After you bid farewell to the elements, follow these four steps to pull up the circle:

    1. Face north with your athame or wand in your power hand, pointed toward the north point of your magic circle.

    2. Slowly turn counterclockwise, and as you turn, imagine the blue-white light of the circle being sucked into the tip of your athame or wand.

    3. With your athame or wand, make an energetic cut across the boundary of where the circle has been, and say,

The circle is now open, but unbroken.

    Merry meet, merry part

    And merry meet again.

    Blessed be!

    Wolf Moon

    T

    HE FIRST

    E

    SBAT

or full moon after Yule is the Wolf Moon. A time of unity, purity, and dormancy, it represents the primal nature of the Goddess being reborn into a new cycle of light. The light of the solar cycle is increasing, and the nights are gradually becoming warmer and shorter all the way to the summer solstice.

    Night 1

    EYES OF THE WOLF SPELL

As the first full moon after the winter solstice or Yule, the Wolf Moon is one of the most important of the high moons. A full moon occurs when the sun and the moon are aligned on opposite sides of the earth. This alignment of the two celestial bodies has a strong effect on the earth, producing a time when energy is high. This is why full moon rituals can be incredibly powerful times for doing magic.

When looking through the eyes of the wolf, the idea is to perceive the true nature of people, events, and experiences. Expand your perception and awareness using the instincts of the wolf. The wolf is part of a pack that use their knowledge and wits to survive a time when the earth is cold and barren. This is also when new patterns are conceived, setting the stage for what is to come. This is also the ideal time for foretelling the future, clairvoyance, and divination practices.

At midnight, begin by drawing a circle of light. This is done by standing at your altar and pounding the stick end of your wand on the altar nine times. Pick up your athame and point it toward the north point of your circle. Starting and ending in the north, draw a magical circle of light clockwise around the circle. Next, call in the elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

Standing in the middle of the circle, call in the powers of the wolf:

On this full moon night at this hour

I call now upon the ancient animal powers

To guide me in the ways of the wolf

    Where instinct and wit prevail

Through darkness, wind, rain, and hail

I am the wolf, the wolf is me

    So be it! Blessed be!

As you enjoy your evening, imagine seeing through the eyes of the wolf. Imagine dreaming with the eyes of the wolf. In the morning pull up the circle and thank the elements. Also thank the wolf for its guidance and power.

    Night 2

    LADIES OF WINTER CANDLE MAGIC

The Ladies of Winter live on the star to the north of the North Star. They bring sleet, hail, and snow, and the solstice sun. Mother Berchta is the mother of the Ladies of Winter. She carries a magic Yule wand and wears an enormous overcoat. She is tall and appears as either a beautiful woman or an ugly wrinkled hag with white eyes. She is often on her horse and accompanied by a troop of elves, faeries, and ghosts. It is customary to light a candle in her honor to bring abundance to you.

For this spell, you will need a white candle and jasmine-scented oil.

Dress the candle by rubbing a few drops of the jasmine oil into the candle body. As you do so, imagine what you want to ask from Mother Berchta. Be clear as to what you want.

Light the candle and dedicate it to Mother Berchta. Say:

I dedicate this candle to Mother Berchta tonight.

Take several minutes to gaze at the candlelight and think about Mother Berchta bringing abundance and good fortune into your life. Be clear as to what you want. Remember the Ladies of Winter reward the kind spirited and punish the mean spirited. When you are done, allow the candle to safely burn down.

    Night 3

    HOWLING WOLF TREE DREAM MEDITATION

The sound of the wind moving through the trees is reminiscent of the howl of wolves. Other Pagan traditions such as the Druids, and the practices of the American Algonquin tribes, also refer to the time after the Winter Solstice as being the Wolf Moon.

A half hour before going to sleep, drink a cup of chamomile tea. While drifting off to sleep, imagine yourself as a seedling that is just beginning to sprout. Sense yourself spreading your roots down into the earth, while at the same time moving your trunk or body toward the light. Feel yourself growing all the time. Plants grow more at night than they do during the day.

The popular New Age author and workshop leader Gregg Braden postulates that each cell of our body generates 1.17 volts of energy. When you calculate all the cells together, your body can generate a lot of energy, particularly when directed toward a particular focus. You are a conduit or lightning rod of energy, waiting to realize your true potential.

Sense yourself becoming a large tree that has grown for many years. Every part of you emanates with energy as you reach toward the light with every part of your being. You are a connecting point between this world and all worlds. As Lucan said in AD 60 when addressing the Druids: To you alone it is given to know the truth about the gods and deities of the sky. The innermost groves of far-off forests are your abodes.

    Night 4

    RIDING TO THE STARS

Stars are like horses. When you wish upon a star, it carries your wish like a winged horse flying across the sky. Ride like a dreamer into the morning light, and in the light of a new day your wishes will come true.

About an hour before dark, think about and decide what you would like to wish for. Be clear what you want. Go outside this evening and wait for the first star to appear in the sky. As you wait, go over your wish.

Upon seeing the first star, recite the following verse:

    Starlight, star bright

    First star I see tonight,

May I ride the magic carpet of your light,

Floating to the stars like fireflies,

Rising to that place where dreams come true,

Where I’m blessed in all things I do.

By the light of the first star, so be it!

Later, when going to sleep, envision the first star that you saw in the evening sky. Imagine yourself moving into the star and riding it across the sky. At the other side, see an image in your mind of your dream becoming reality. See it! Touch it! Hear it! Smell it! Taste it! Be it!

    Night 5

    A QUESTION FOR PESSOMANCY

Pessomancy is a form of divination that uses seeds or pebbles. Traditionally, the diviner throws the seeds, then from their pattern interprets their meaning.

To peform this spell, you will need a white candle, a blank piece of paper with a line drawn down the middle, and nine bean seeds or nine pebbles.

Light the candle while dedicating it to the Goddess. Place the candle in a holder, and put it on your altar. Lay the paper down in front of it. The line down the middle of the paper should line up with the candle. Say the following:

    Goddess of light

    Let my future shine bright.

Think about the question, and as you do, drop the seeds or pebbles on the line drawn on the paper. The seeds and pebbles that fall on the left side are favorable to the outcome of the question, whereas those seeds and stones that fall on the right side point to things not working out. The number of seeds and stones that fall on either side of the line indicate whether or not the outcome will be positive or negative. When you are done, allow the candle to burn completely.

    Night 6

    WOLF MOON LOVE POTION

When the nights are cold, it’s nice to have a warm body next to you to hold and love. This potion is best done with the one you love on a cold evening when the two of you want to set the night on fire.

To perform this spell, you will need two candles, one red and one green, chamomile and jasmine tea, and a teaspoon of honey.

Draw the circle and call in the elements. Set the two candles in holders. You light the green one and have your beloved light the red one. In unison call out the following verse:

    Goddess and God of Love,

Grace our lovemaking with your fire,

So that our souls might be warm,

    While gliding higher and higher;

    Toward pure ecstasy!

    Ayea! So mote it be!

In two cups of warm water, brew the chamomile and jasmine tea. Stir in a half teaspoon of honey into each potion cup. As the potion cools, sip it while looking in each other’s eyes. Imagine loving your partner completely. Let your imagination run wild. Allow the candles to safely burn down. Then take your beloved to bed and make passionate love. When drifting to sleep, give yourself the suggestion to have dreams that drive you to awaken in the morning and make love again.

Pull up the circle and say farewell to the elements in the morning after you make love again. Be sure to thank the Goddess and God for their divine blessings.

    Night 7

    REBIRTHING RITUAL

Winter is not only about death, but also about rebirth. The Rebirthing Ritual is similar to an initiation ritual, where a seeker leaves behind his or her former self in order to be reborn into her or his new self. The idea here is one of transformation in which you leave your old self behind and replace it with the new self.

Collect three things that represent your former self. Before dark, gather them together. Go outside somewhere private, and dig a hole in the earth. Put the objects in the hole, and cover them with dirt. Say three times:

Let the earth take my former self,

And let my new self awaken with joy.

    So be it! Blessed be!

This process acts as a symbolic death of your old self. Say a few personal words as you bury your old self forever. Now take a deep breath, focus on your new self and who you are becoming. Realize you can become whoever you want to be. The choice is yours to make. If you don’t like who you are, allow your new self to awaken and live each night and day with passion!

    Night 8

    WOLF MOON RITUAL OIL

Use this oil to induce insightful and blessed dreams.

To make this ritual oil you will need a small cup, two teaspoons of olive oil, lavender oil, clary sage oil, and vanilla oil.

Make this mixture just before you go to sleep. Begin by putting two teaspoons of olive oil in a small cup. As you add four drops of lavender oil, say:

Wolf Moon oil bless me with power and insight.

Next, add two drops of clary sage oil while saying:

Divine dream oil empower me with blessed dreams.

Now, add two drops of vanilla oil, and say:

Divine dream oil empower me with sweet dreams.

Conclude by mixing the oil with the fingers of your power hand (right hand if you are right-handed), and chant several times:

Divine dream oil empower me with blessed dreams.

Rub the oil into the front and back of your neck, and into your wrists and ankles. As you rub the oil into your skin, chant:

Divine dream oil empower me with blessed dreams.

While drifting to sleep, repeat to yourself:

    Sweet dreams, blessed be!

When you awaken, write down everything you recall from your dreams in your journal.

    Night 9

    THREE-STONE MOON DIVINATION

For this method of divination, you will need a sage and cedar smudge stick and three stones; one dark colored (smoky quartz), one light colored (clear quartz), and one neutral colored (agate).

When the moon rises, light the smudge and clear each of the stones by carefully bathing them in the smoke for a few minutes. This clears any unwanted energies from the stones. Fully extinguish the smudge before proceeding. Next, take the stones outside if possible and weather permitting (or use a window with a view of the moon) and hold them up in the moonlight. Envision in your mind’s eye each of the stones being filled with the light and power of the moon. Use your breath to pulse the image of the moon into the latticework of the stone. The Vogel Pulsed-Breath technique is easy and very effective. Practice the technique using these steps. Simply take a deep breath in, hold it, and imagine the moon in your mind’s eye, then breathe sharply out your nose. As you breathe out, imagine planting the image of the moon into the stone itself using your pulsed breath, intention, and power of your mind. Repeat this process three times for best results.

Using the pointer finger on your power hand, draw a circle of moonlight around you. Imagine bright white light coming from the tip of your finger as you outline the parameter of the circle. Now, draw a smaller circle within the circle in front of you. Trace the outline with your pointer finger three times. Next call in the elements. Sit or stand quietly and think of a pressing question you want answered by the divination. Now invite into your circle the divine energies that you want to help in answering your question, for example the Goddesses, the Gods, and helpful ancestral and nature spirits. Whenever possible, call them by name when asking them into your circle.

While asking your question aloud, hold the stones in your power hand and gently toss them into the center of the smaller circle of white light in front of you. The dark stone is the no or negative aspect to your question, the light stone is the yes or positive aspect, and the neutral colored stone is your indicator stone. Looking down at your circle and three stones, check to see which of the other two stones the indicator stone is closest to. The one that it is closest to is your answer. Also note the distance between the indicator and the answer stones. The closer the stone is to the indicator stone, the stronger the energy, whether positive or negative. Make a note of the answer, either positive or negative, in your journal. When you are done, pull up the circle and bid farewell to the elements. Thank the divine energies that graced your circle.

    Night 10

    WOLF MOON ENERGIZING BATH

You will need lavender essential oil, a white tea candle, and sandalwood-scented soap.

Fill the bathtub with warm water and then add the nine drops of lavender oil while saying:

    Maid, Mother, and Crone,

    Earth, flesh, and bone,

    Three faces of the Goddess,

    Three faces of myself.

    Please fill me tonight

With your divine love and grace.

In the name of the Lady, so be it!

Before entering the bath, light the candle and dedicate it to your favorite goddess. As you enter the bath, feel the warm water caressing and soothing your skin. Let all the tension in your body move into and dissipate into the water. Take several deep breaths, and feel completely relaxed.

Scrub your entire body with the sandalwood soap, and as you do feel your body being revitalized. Take a deep breath, and sense the energy moving in from your lungs and filling every cell of your being. Feel yourself being energized, and totally alive. Call out three times:

I am alive with the love of the Goddess.

Allow the candle to safely burn down.

    Night 11

    A MATTER OF FATE

The three most notable and powerful giant maidens in Norse mythology are the Norns, with their shape-shifting wolf companions called the Hounds of the Norns. These giant goddesses of fate are named Urd, who represents the past, Verdandi, who symbolizes the present, and Skuld, who signifies the future. Even gods cannot undo what the Norns weave into the fabric of fate.

As you drift off to sleep, give yourself the suggestion that you will meet the three Norns in your dreams.
