DEDICATION

I’d like to dedicate the expanded 3rd edition of my Instant Hypnosis and Rapid Inductions Guidebook to the people who’ve helped to make it the book that it is.

Firstly, Sara and Ché, your honest, no-BS proof reading and feedback helped to ensure that what I was writing actually made sense to someone other than me, and that I didn’t say ‘so’ or ‘that said’ too many times!

So, that said, I’d also like to dedicate this to my family, friends and fans who’ve helped and supported me over the years – you guys rock!

Finally, I’d like to dedicate this book to everyone I’ve hypnotised over the past few years, and especially those where things didn’t necessarily ‘go to plan’, because you’re the reason that I continue to develop, tweak and refine the way that I apply (and teach) hypnotic inductions.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rory Z Fulcher (often known as ‘Rory Z’) was born in Norfolk, England in the 1980s. Having always been an enthusiast of creativity and the power of language and influence, even as a child, hypnosis quickly became one of his great passions. Rory has been practicing hypnosis since his high-school years and currently spends the vast majority of his time working on hypnosis books, videos, live and online hypnosis training and various other hypnotic projects. For Rory, hypnosis is more than just a full-time job, it’s also a passion.

Rory is a successful hypnotherapist, having helped people all over the world with hypnotherapy. He is an adept stage and street hypnotist, and also trains students in all aspects of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Rory has been featured by (and performed for) various international media outlets, including the BBC, Daily Mail, Lad Bible and Men’s Health, to name but a few. As well as bringing hypnosis into the media, Rory frequently travels the world to speak and perform at public and private international conferences and events.

When not busying himself with his hypnosis businesses, Rory spends the rest of his time with his family at their home in Norfolk. Aside from hypnosis, Rory is an expert-novice didgeridoo player, an avid bodybuilding and fitness enthusiast, a cheese and whisky aficionado, a black sheep, a nomad, the class clown, a closet-goth and an all-round English gentleman.

WARNING:

If you don’t have experience using instant and rapid hypnotic inductions, before you use ANY of the techniques mentioned further on in this book, please read and acknowledge all the information and instructions provided in the preceding chapters, because safety is your number one priority. This means first and foremost the safety of the person that you are hypnotising, and secondly your own physical, emotional and legal safety.

INTRODUCTION

So, you want to learn how to hypnotise people FAST? Well, you’ve taken the first step, congratulations! Within these pages you will find all the information that you need to safely and quickly hypnotise anybody at virtually any time and in any place. Whether you’re looking to entertain your friends with impromptu/street hypnosis demonstrations, hypnotise your therapy clients in just a few seconds, or use rapid inductions as part of your stage hypnosis show, herein you will find the secrets of rapid hypnosis, explained in a way that’s easy to replicate yourself.

The information contained in this book is the result of my many years spent studying and practicing hypnosis, both for entertainment (performing stage hypnosis shows and doing street hypnosis demonstrations), as well as in the therapy room helping clients. Though most of my experiences whilst practising hypnosis have been positive and effective, occasionally I was unsuccessful (hey, even I was a beginner once). This is great news for you though, because it means you can reap the benefits of both my novice mistakes and of my learned successes as you read on, meaning you don’t have to make the mistakes that I did, and can get straight to the ‘success’ part!

The rapid hypnosis techniques contained in this guidebook have been developed and honed throughout my ongoing career as a hypnotist, and are a result of continuously evaluating and improving the way that I do hypnosis. Though some of the techniques in this book might seem familiar to you, you may notice that I perform them in a slightly different way to other hypnotists and trainers, and even differently to how I used to teach them myself! That’s why this is the third edition of this book, because I keep refining and developing these techniques to make them as effective as they can possibly be! With scripts and breakdowns of each technique, this book will enable you to easily hypnotise using cutting-edge, tried-and-tested rapid hypnosis approaches, and achieve the same positive results that I do.

All the inductions and supporting techniques in this book are broken down into manageable chunks and use simple language, so that pretty much anyone can use them. As with my other books, I want to get my point across to whoever is reading, no matter what your background is, so I don’t overcomplicate things. I write the same way I talk, which is (usually) easy to understand and follow, and sometimes it’s even funny! Complex phraseology and linguistic mumbo-jumbo isn’t required in order to learn hypnosis. In fact, sometimes simple really is best!

As you may already know, there are many different uses for hypnosis, so to make this book as universal as possible I will be giving examples relating to both hypnotherapy as well as stage and street hypnosis. Also, throughout the book, I will be referring to the people you’ll be hypnotising (clients, volunteers, participants, etc.) as ‘subjects’, and I will either refer to them in a gender-neutral form (them/they) or in the masculine form (he/him) unless a script requires otherwise. This is not due to being in any way ‘un-PC’, but simply a matter of congruence and ease of reading. It’s best to mention these things at the start, as some people are overly ‘PC’, and I wouldn’t want to offend anyone with such a simple misunderstanding. In fact, I’d much rather offend someone with swearing (because that shit is hilarious).

…oh yeah, if you don’t like swearing, then it’s quite possible that I might not be the right author/trainer for you. However, if you’re willing to look past (or even applaud and enjoy) my own personal choice of linguistic tools (yes, swearing can be a useful hypnotic tool), and you’re ready to gain a deeper understanding of how to hypnotise people fast, then do please read on…

THIS IS NOT A HYPNOTHERAPY/STAGE HYPNOSIS/STREET HYPNOSIS BOOK!

This book has been written with the sole intention of teaching you how to put someone into hypnosis quickly, it’s not focused on what to do with someone after you have hypnotised them. If you’d like to learn what to do with someone once they are in hypnosis! A couple of great places to start are my books; ‘The Beginner’s Guide to Hypnotherapy’ and the ‘Stage and Street Hypnosis Handbook’. These books will give you a complete overview of how to do hypnotherapy and stage/street hypnosis respectively. Both books are available via my website; learnhypnosis.com or direct from Amazon.

A WORD ON HYPNOSIS SCRIPTS

Later in the book, when you read through all the techniques, you will notice each technique has its own script. Now, scripts are a huge point of contention in the hypnosis world. Most professional hypnotists (whether entertainers or therapists) don’t tend to use scripts, whereas some less professional (or less confident) hypnotists rely on ‘hypnosis scripts’ for everything that they do (this is most common with hypnotherapists, in fact). Relying on scripts is not something that I’d recommend, because scripts are very limiting. That said, scripts do have their uses, the main one being that they are a great learning tool.

I don’t use scripts for any of my hypnosis work these days, however, that’s not to say that I’ve never used them, because I have. I used scripts a lot when I first started out as a hypnotherapist, whether reading them to clients or simply writing them out to get an idea of what I wanted to say. Writing your own hypnosis scripts is a great way to become familiar with the words and suggestions that you’re likely to be using within your hypnosis sessions, shows or demonstrations.

When using the scripts presented in this book, your #1 goal is to familiarise yourself with the content of the scripts and then work to stop using scripts as soon as you possibly can. Don’t wait until you’re ‘comfortable’, start working script-free before you’re comfortable, because this will help you to get comfortable even quicker! Challenge yourself to actually learn what you need to be saying, so that you won’t need the words written down in front of you. That is how you get good at giving hypnotic suggestions, and that is how it becomes easy and effortless. To this end, I’ve broken down each technique down into its key component parts (bullet points), so that you don’t need to learn whole scripts, but instead, you’ll just need to remember the ‘key points’ of what it is that you’re meant to be saying.

Have faith that you will be able to learn to do this, because if I can, you can.

The scripts in this book have been specifically designed to be as universal as possible. However, as I’m the one writing the scripts, they’re written in ‘Rory language’. No, I don’t mean all swearing, what I mean is, some of the scripts will contain words and phrasing that I personally use that wouldn’t necessarily sound right coming from someone else. I have aimed to cut down on this as much as possible, but there will be times where parts of a script don’t sound right or don’t feel right for you. If this is the case, there’s a super easy solution… change it! If I say ‘let your whole body relax’ and you’d prefer to say ‘allow your entire body to relax’, then say that instead. Obviously, the words you use need to convey the same point/idea, but so long as they do, you can be entirely flexible in your delivery of suggestions. Utilise your own vocabulary, pace, accent and delivery style to make your suggestions fit you. There’s no point pretending to be someone else. You’re not me, you don’t think like me and you don’t talk like me, so feel free to modify any/all of the scripts in this book to suit yourself and your delivery.

Bottom line: Scripts are useful. Get to know them, learn the bullet points and then ditch the scripts as soon as you are able to …and know that you are able to.

SAFETY & ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Before we begin exploring how to do rapid inductions, it’s important to learn how to do things safely and ethically. Your top priority as a hypnotist is the safety and well-being of all participants involved. This has to be the case, because you will be working with real people. People have feelings (both physical and emotional) and by allowing you to hypnotise them, they are entrusting themselves, body and mind, to you for the duration of the hypnosis session/performance. That trust must not be broken, because if it were broken;

• Your subjects could get hurt.

• Your subjects could become emotionally distressed/disturbed.

• Audiences could turn against you.

• Friends/relatives of the subjects could turn against you.

• You could get sued for negligence/unsafe practice.

• You could get a bad reputation (word of mouth is powerful, and negative word of mouth is less likely to be forgotten).

Those are all worst-case-scenarios, however, if you’re not practicing safely or appropriately, then it’s likely that any (or all) of the above things could occur in a real-world situation. How then do you avoid all of those things? By being smart, safe and morally/ethically appropriate with all of your hypnosis work. As such, there are many different aspects that need considering before you even think about putting your hypnotist pants on. The first thing to consider is who (and when) not to hypnotise.

WHO/WHEN TO NOT HYPNOTISE

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

If you can tell that your potential hypnotic subject is intoxicated, do not touch them with a barge pole. Drugs and alcohol can cause people to do some very strange things, so you can never quite predict how a drunk/drugged person might react to hypnosis, or how they might respond whilst hypnotised.

For example, let’s say you’re performing a hypnosis show at a birthday party, and party-attendee Bill has casually sunk 10 beers during the course of the evening. He looks a bit wobbly, but you bring him up and hypnotise him anyway (because he responded well to your suggestibility testing and you’re short on good subjects). During the show, you decide that Bill’s new name is Zebedee and he has spring-legs and can’t stop jumping. Everyone loves it, he’s a great subject, however, with all that jumping around and going in and out of hypnosis, Bill’s soused brain decides that it’d be a good idea to empty the contents of his stomach via his mouth. Worse, he does so mid-sentence, all over your brand-new radio-microphone. Not so funny anymore, is it? The staff won’t want to clean up his puke either, so let’s try and avoid that whole sticky situation (no pun intended).

It's said that a drink or two can actually help the hypnosis process, reducing inhibitions a little and ‘loosening people up’, which is fine. People at hypnosis shows tend to be there ‘for a good time’, which often means they may be drinking. However, it’s down to your discretion to assess whether you think someone’s had too much to drink in order to participate in the hypnosis process safely and effectively, whether for a show, a therapy session, or otherwise. Hypnosis requires people to focus, and if they are so intoxicated that they are unable to focus, then hypnosis isn’t going to work. In fact, it could end up being dangerous for them, and for those around them!

Whilst we’re on the topic of alcohol, let’s also think about our own consumption of alcohol for a moment… Would YOU want to be hypnotised by some drunk guy? I highly doubt it. Some of us enjoy an alcoholic beverage, others like to have a stiff drink to calm the nerves, and that’s just fine; but keep it singular! Once it gets to the plural ‘drinks’ then you should feel morally obliged to refuse to hypnotise anyone, no matter how sober you ‘feel’, because a drunk hypnotist is an unsafe hypnotist.

I have been out partying and drinking in a bar, and I ended up chatting with a friend about hypnosis for a while. Then, all of the sudden he shouted out to the whole bar This guy can hypnotise anyone, come and let him hypnotise you!

Now obviously he had the best intentions (and just wanted to see a free hypnosis show), but I’d been drinking steadily for most of the afternoon/evening. This meant I had to turn away half a bar-full of hypnosis requests, which sucked because doing hypnosis is great fun! Some of the people were literally begging me to hypnotise them (…I hope you wanna be popular, because we hypnotists always seem to be the centre of attention)! It was hard to refuse these requests, simply because I was brimming with additional alcohol-fuelled confidence and I wanted to put on a mini hypno-show so badly, but I did refuse, because it’s the right thing to do.

When you’re not in full control of yourself (even though you may drunkenly think you are, you’re probably not), you should instantly and honestly refuse to hypnotise anyone. Let them know that you don’t use hypnosis when you’ve been drinking. People will often appreciate that you’re not taking liberties with their well-being. Also, nothing’s stopping you from giving out your business card/social details and coming back to meet them next week to give them a professional, sober demonstration!

EPILEPSY/FITS/SEIZURES

Fits and seizures can be triggered by heightened emotional states, and hypnotists are really good at being able to generate highly emotional reactions at the click of a finger. A hypnotherapist can take subjects back to past significant events that happened in their life, many of which will have strong emotions linked to them. This could potentially create problems with an epileptic/fit-prone subject.

As well as emotions, there are many other possible triggers that can cause someone to have a seizure, such as seeing flashing lights. If you asked a subject to visualise something that, in their imagination, involved a flashing light, it could potentially cause a seizure (yes, seriously). Always ask about this with your potential subjects, for their own safety.

PREGNANCY

Pregnancy is another area where you should exercise caution. The reason pregnant women should not be used for stage hypnosis shows and street hypnosis demonstrations is simply because accidents can happen. For a fit and healthy hypnotised bloke, slipping sideways off his chair and landing on his arse causes next to no real problem. Imagine the same situation however, but replace the fit, healthy guy with a pregnant woman... She could wind up being a young woman who up until recently used to be pregnant, if you catch my drift. This is something that (I can imagine) nobody would want to be responsible for.

Hypnosis itself has no adverse effects on pregnant women, in fact many women give birth whilst in hypnosis, as it can help them to control and alleviate a great deal of pain. So, we’re not concerned about the effects of the hypnosis itself, it’s more the environment or situation that can cause issues. Obviously, when performed in a safe, well-controlled environment, such as in the hypnotherapy office, hypnosis can be very beneficial for pregnant women. However, a comedy hypnosis demonstration is definitely not what any self-respecting hypnotist would classify as a ‘well-controlled environment’ (that’s not to say that entertainment hypnosis is unsafe, more that the hypnotist would need to have eyes in the back of his head and up his arse in order to see what’s happening with all subjects all the time). Tripping, falling and quick, vigorous movements are some of the things that pregnant women should strive to avoid, yet any good hypnosis show would not be complete without the potential risk of these things happening. As a result, we certainly do not hypnotise ‘Mrs Preggers’ for any entertainment hypnosis performance/demonstration, no matter how much she whines and protests, or how pants-wetting-terrifying her general pregnant-demeanour may be.

Just try to look as un-cake-like as possible when telling her she can’t participate, so she doesn’t eat you in a hormone-filled rage!

INJURIES

Let’s say you just performed a hypnotic suggestibility test with a group of strangers in the street, and you have some good potential street hypnosis subjects to choose from. You approach the first and ask for his name with your hand outstretched ready to ‘shake’ (or to do a ‘hypnotic handshake induction’). You pull the guy’s arm with a small, firm jerk, but now, instead of hearing you say sleep, the audience hears a scream of pain from the mouth of your subject – your subject who is recovering from a sprained wrist he sustained last week whilst playing football

Awkwardness ensues.
