Reign of Fire - Karin Reeve

    CHAPTER ONE

Waves crashing against the sandy shoreline could not drown out the sound of Taryn Malone’s contented laughter as she and Keiryn Falcon cavorted about in the ocean’s blue-green water with several of their friends. She never grew tired of watching him disappear beneath the surface only to emerge again as an exquisite dolphin leaping out of the water into a graceful flip before going under once again and reappearing as Keiryn. It made her wonder just what it would feel like to be able to become any animal she wanted. Sadly, the Skin-Walker gift had been one of the few Gaias abilities she had not been blessed with.

As they continued to frolic in the coastal waters on the warm sunny day in California, Keiryn shot Taryn a knowing look. She nodded, needing no further explanation. Silently, she slipped beneath the water as Keiryn caught Kellan James’ attention. While Kellan laughed at the pig’s nose displayed prominently on his friend’s face, he yelped in surprise as something grabbed his ankle and gave it a hard tug, pulling him below. Sputtering to the surface, he caught sight of Taryn and Keiryn grinning ear-to-ear.

I can’t believe I fell for that bait and switch trick again, Kellan laughed. It had not been the first time the two pranksters had caught him off guard. In fact, they were becoming quite the team, one serving to distract, while the other pulled the unsuspecting prey beneath the water.

Sitting atop a large blanket, Larkin Taylor watched from the beach as jealousy and happiness fought a never-ending battle deep inside of him. It had been nearly three months since Taryn’s rage had last surfaced, and for that he was truly grateful. However, it could not stop him from feeling disappointment over the fact that his old friend, Keiryn, had seemed to play such a significant part in it.  The fact that Keiryn’s new gifts seemed to just flow from him at will gave him and Taryn something in common that no other Gaias possessed, neither had to use their hands. It also didn’t help that her words from graduation day played over and over in his head, regardless of the numerous times she had assured him that she was only in love with him.

Hey, Larkin. Mind if I have a seat? Ibrym Raines asked, tossing him a soda from the cooler.

Yeah, sure, Larkin shrugged, trying to hide what was already apparent to the others. He was grateful for the new found camaraderie with the California pack that had shown up in search of Taryn all those months ago in Williams. Though there had been a time when he had considered them the enemy, he now knew Ibrym had been following the request that Taryn had asked of him before she sacrificing herself to the Mortari. Now here, on their home turf, Larkin finally felt at ease with the pack leader, even considered him a friend.

Stretching across the blanket, Ibrym settled in. How do you do it, Brother? he asked, referring to how the teen seemed to tolerate Taryn and Keiryn’s revived closeness. If it were Marlayne... Larkin threw him a look of warning, causing him to stop abruptly. Look, all I’m saying is you’re a far better man than I could be in this situation.

I love her, and he’s part of the package.

Taking a drink from the can, Ibrym shook his head. She really does seem happy. He paused, glancing several yards away to where Nalani and the twins were soaking up the sun with a few of the girls from his pack. Too bad the same can’t be said for her.

    Nalani knows Keiryn loves her.

Maybe so, but it’s not her sitting on his shoulders right now playing a game of chicken, now is it?

School starts in a few weeks. I’ll be there with Taryn then Nalani and Keiryn will have all the time in the world together, Larkin reasoned, more for his own benefit than Ibrym’s.

As the two continued to talk, Taryn ran up soaking wet and joined them. The water feels amazing, she smiled, taking a seat on Larkin’s dry lap. Snuggling up with him, she pulled his lips to hers. I love you.

Love you, too, he replied, kissing her quite thoroughly, knowing Keiryn had followed her out of the water. Pulling back, she rolled her eyes. What? he asked.

Nothing, she sighed, turning to Ibrym. It was certainly kind of your family to invite us to stay for the summer.

It’s no problem. They’ve really enjoyed having everyone. Plus my mom thought it was the only way for her to see me and Alderyc again, he teased.

If you ever need or want to go home... she started.

Taryn, please don’t. You’ve already given us so much. Keeping watch over your family is our honor.

You don’t owe me anything for what should have been yours all along, she countered.

You’re not responsible for the Council and their short-sightedness, Ibrym insisted. Pausing, he glanced around the beach at their family. Speaking of the Council, have they told you when they’re expecting you again?

This weekend, Taryn answered, her chest rising and falling dramatically as she thought about the Elder Council and the formal monthly dinners she and Larkin were now expected to attend as Odyn’s special guests. The only saving grace she found about those gatherings was how differently the Mortari and Elder Council interpreted the meaning of formal. Her expected attire was a black ankle length pencil skirt paired with a white blouse with flared, dramatically ruffled sleeves and collar. The skirt was restrictive while the sleeves made eating a challenge, which was probably for the best knowing how despised she was amongst the majority of the council. It definitely lessened her chances of dying of food poisoning while in their company.

Any word on what the topic of discussion will be about this time? Ibrym inquired, worry present in his eyes.

Probably more of the same from the last two meetings, she shrugged.

Larkin smirked, rolling his eyes theatrically. Doing his best impersonation of Nodryck, he answered, More focus on control, less free-will amongst the communities, and let us not forget it is essential to strengthen our defenses and weed out the weak or wavering during this time of crisis.

Although his impression elicited a quiet giggle from Taryn, her shoulders were instantly weighted. Ibrym, I know you’re worried, but there’s no way for the Council to know about what we’ve been up to. As far as they’re concerned, nothing’s changed. We just have to keep up the facade that you and all of your brothers still answer to them.

He shook his head before taking another swallow of soda. I’d feel a lot better if we could perform a Blood Oath.

I’m sorry, she whispered. There was a way for them to do exactly that and not expose her most protected secret. If they were to execute the Oath, she would have to use her gift as a Healer individually, on each member of the group that was now twenty-plus strong, since her blood was toxic to all those who suffered from the werewolf affliction. They would still need the ability to recite the sacred and binding pledge to cement the Oath. While at times she felt strong enough to move mountains, she didn’t know if she could heal all of them before the toxic properties of her blood claimed them. It was a risk she wasn’t willing to take.

Seeing she was getting lost inside her head, Larkin gave her a gentle squeeze, bringing her back to the present. Hey, it looks like Andyn’s found something. You should go see what it is.

Smiling warmly, she leaned in and kissed his cheek. You want to come with?

No, you go ahead. I’ll be here waiting for you, Larkin whispered, running his fingers gingerly over her honey colored hair.

As she rose to her feet, Keiryn stood and called out, What is it, Andyn?

Andyn Mitchell-Malone smiled brightly, looking to his sister. His skin was nicely tanned from the days spent in the California sun. Sydney says it’s a conch shell. I’ll bring it up so you can get a better look, he called out from the water’s edge.

Sydney Drake was Ibrym and Alderyc’s youngest cousin, visiting from northern Oregon for the summer with her family. She had pale blonde hair and shared the same beautiful, blue-green eyes as her mother and cousins. Though the girl was nearly a full year older than Andyn, the two had become inseparable from the moment they met.

Laughing as they ran, Sydney and Andyn soon were standing in front of Taryn. Sydney says if you hold it up to your ear you’ll hear the ocean. And I heard it, her little brother shared.

Dude, Kellan interrupted with an ornery grin, tossing his arm around the boy’s shoulders. You heard the ocean because you were standing in it...duh.

Jack-ass, Andyn replied, elbowing him in the ribs. Sydney quickly grabbed the conch before the two boys began wrestling about. Kellan could have easily overpowered the younger boy. Instead, he made a good show of it before submitting while in the grips of a sleeper hold, thus allowing Andyn to impress the girl.

While they dusted the sand off, Sydney held the shell out to Taryn. I know we’re by the ocean, but you should give it a listen anyways.

Taking it in her hands, Taryn lifted the opening to her ear. Listening carefully she heard the sounds of faint whistles from the breeze blowing through its crevices. That is pretty cool, she smiled, handing it back to the girl.

I’d like to give it a try, Keiryn insisted, holding his hand out.

The young girl passed it to him and watched as he appeared to be listening intently. Slowly he lowered it, looking at Sydney with concern.

What’d you hear? she asked with furrowed brows.

Placing the conch carefully in her hands, he began to shake his head. That’s not good, not good at all, he mumbled.

What is it? she pushed, wondering what he could have possibly heard to cause him such worry.

With a sigh, he replied, A fish should never stay out of the water for too long. With an enormous grin he tossed Taryn over his shoulder and ran toward the water, dunking her thoroughly. She emerged sputtering and giggling as she playfully splashed at her dear friend.

Sydney, Andyn and several of the others laughed at the spectacle, but not Larkin. Although his eyes turned black as night as jealousy surged within him, he remained perfectly still. Not even a twitch was visible within his muscles.

Ibrym watched in awe at the level of control his friend showed in overpowering his natural instincts. Being afflicted himself; he understood how difficult a feat it was. He was just messing around, Larkin.

I know, he growled, his eyes returning to their natural color.

Sensing Larkin’s discord, Taryn quickly made her way back to the shore and into his waiting arms. I love you, Wolfy, she whispered, squeezing him tightly. Her caring heart weighed heavily with guilt, understanding just how difficult it was for him to accept her unique friendship with Keiryn. There was so much she longed to tell her one true love, but the secrets she kept were not her own.

Though he was endlessly conflicted, Larkin tried to pretend otherwise. I love you, too, Tare-Bear.

Watching their awkward embrace from the water, Keiryn knew he had overstepped again. Not only with Larkin, but Nalani as well.

Infinite sadness and unrest over their current predicament was taking a visible toll on the beautiful teen. Her stunning crystal blue eyes were often blood shot from the many sleepless nights as well as the numerous tears she shed, fearing the love of her life would someday leave with Taryn, never to return again.

    •••••

As evening fell, the non-Gaias beach-goers started to pack it in and call it a day. Ibrym’s younger brother Alderyc, Kellan and a few others worked to build a bonfire, while Eben Carter scanned the water. Peering hard, he noticed four large dorsal fins skimming along the surface. Sharks, he shouted.

Several swimmers rushed onto the sandy beach out of harm’s way, while Jonesy Blake, Andyn and Sydney swam feverishly for shore.

Taryn held out her hand, forming a protective shield around each of them. Knowing her efforts would keep them safe, she watched as the sharks aggressively pursued the trio. It was unlike anything she had ever seen on television or read in books and magazines. The large Great Whites smashed forcefully into her protection, snapping their enormous jaws against the invisible shield. As her friends exited the water, the sharks surged forward onto the beach and lingered momentarily before turning around and disappearing back into the water.

Ibrym, who was that? she demanded, knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt those had not been any ordinary sharks.

Just as he was about to answer, a large group appeared in the distance, heading purposefully toward them. Ibrym shook his head and sighed heavily, Ronyn Thompson and his pack.

    Friends of yours? Keiryn growled.

Taryn spied her friend from the corner of her eye. Keiryn, go put a t-shirt on or something.

What? he asked, confused and momentarily distracted from his irritation.

    T-shirt...now! she barked.

Larkin looked at her curiously, as did many of their friends, but no one dared mention the strange command she had just given. Her attention was now solely focused upon a visibly shaken Jonesy, Andyn and Sydney.

Do you know why they’d show up here? Larkin questioned.

Every year around this time some of the northern communities get together.

Gritting his teeth, Larkin shook his head in frustration. You could have gone. Taryn would have understood.

Yes, but things are different now, aren’t they? Ibrym retorted, understanding Larkin’s displeasure at having strangers in such close proximity to Taryn, especially those who suffered from the affliction.

The pair quieted as Ronyn and his family drew closer. The young man stopped only a few feet away from Ibrym. He was tall and imposing with muscular biceps and thighs, showcased in his white muscle shirt and swim trunks. His hair was a light brown that had streaks of blonde from his days spent in the sun. He stood silently as he tilted his head from one side to the other studying Ibrym with a somber face. After several moments, the man spoke. So, Ibrym, this is what our friendship has been reduced to? Me hunting you down and crashing the party with your new friends. Another silent moment passed before Ronyn’s face broke with an ornery grin. Come here, Brother, he laughed, hugging him fiercely, while patting him on the shoulder.

With laughter now filling the air and easing the tension, Ibrym began introducing everyone. Larkin shook hands with Ronyn, but there was something unspoken in his grip and eyes that brought a sudden surge of caution up the back of his throat.

I hope we’re not intruding, the man smiled.

It’s a public beach, Larkin replied.

Ronyn’s eyes wandered until he caught a glimpse of Taryn. So it would seem.

Something wrong? Larkin questioned, his words laced with grit.

I suppose not, Ronyn answered, his tone harboring a hint of disdain.

Larkin shared an uneasy glance with Ibrym before moving on to find Taryn. Looking around he quickly spotted Jonesy and Andyn, but there was no visible sign of his love, only her lingering scent. Where’s Taryn? he asked the boys. Still shaken by his encounter with the sharks, Jonesy mumbled something inaudible. Looking to Andyn for answers, he pushed. What’s he saying?

Sis and Keiryn left together a few minutes ago. She said to tell you they’d be back once things were under control...whatever that means, Andyn replied, his irritation over the earlier incident on full display as he glared at the newcomers.

Immediately he knew what she had meant. Fighting to keep his own irritation at bay, Larkin knelt down while placing a hand on the boy’s shoulder. You’re angry, I get it. But for everyone’s well-being, we need to play it cool...you need to keep cool. Alright?

I already promised Sis I wouldn’t do anything, the young teen rolled his eyes. Besides, she did that thing...you know, where she tucks it away from my reach.

Having watched Taryn work with the boy over the past three months on learning how to better control his secret gift of animating with fire, Larkin knew her decision was just as much in the boy’s interest as it was for everyone else’s. He also understood how much it pained her to have to do such a thing to someone she cared so deeply for. Any limitation of an individual’s freedom caused her great inner turmoil. Though she had never directly stated it, he believed it was due to her time spent back in the little town of Galatia, Kansas, where she had been kept under lock and key for most of her existence as a prisoner to her gifts.

Larkin tousled the boy’s hair and exhaled. Then I’m counting on you to keep your word, Andyn.

    •••••

Walking up a hill in the nearby wooded area, Keiryn growled audibly. Who the hell does something like that?

Apparently this Ronyn guy and his pack...but, Keiryn, we have bigger problems to worry about, don’t we? Taryn replied, motioning to the topsy-turvy environment in which they now stood.

Watching the broken branches, fallen leaves and various sized rocks floating about, his face instantly flushed. You knew it was coming on...how?

Placing her cool hand over his warm cheek, she sighed. Your emotions seem to trigger whatever this gift of Chaos is, and I could feel it building inside of you ever since the thing with the conch.

He stood silent, looking everywhere but at her as more guilt and embarrassment flashed across his face.

I know right now this isn’t easy, but Larkin and Nalani are trying desperately to accept whatever this is between us, Keiryn. I suspect someday it will get easier, and when we look back maybe we’ll be able to make sense of it all.

    But for now?

For now we live life as dear friends. But we must always be considerate and respectful for those we love and cherish.

Is that all? Keiryn chuckled, thinking how much easier said than done it would be.

No...we need to put these woods back together before someone else sees, she smiled, arching a brow in the direction of a large log that floated past, missing her head by mere inches.

With softened eyes, he shook his head in agreement. Taryn, would you walk me through it again?

Sure, but you have to promise that you’ll practice controlling it on your own.

With a heavy sigh, he nodded. I promise, but it’s harder than you might think. I mean, essentially it’s like walking blindly through a dense fog and bumping into all these things that could possibly be what you’re looking for, but none of it is. I’m a freak of nature.

The girl stood, clinching her fists tightly. Keiryn, do you think I’m a freak for what I am?

Immediately he scoffed at the idea. Absolutely not, Taryn. The control you have over your gifts makes you incredible. But me, I have this Chaos thing inside of me. Without you, it would control me. I just consider us all lucky that you discovered the Imperium gift hiding beside the Chaos that day. He paused, fear flooding his eyes. I’d hate to imagine what could have happened if you weren’t so special and hadn’t helped me.

Forcing a smile, Taryn choked down the guilt rising from the back of her throat, a side-effect from all of the secrets she was keeping, not just from him, but also Larkin. You need to stop beating yourself up for what you are. Eventually we’ll figure this thing out and it won’t seem so bad.

That’s easy for you to say.

    Why?

    Just because, he snapped.

Taryn rolled her eyes and exhaled heavily. Is it because I’ve lived every single day of my life hiding what’s inside of me? Is that the reason it’s so easy for me?

    Forget I said anything.

No. You have an incredible and powerful gift, and just because we don’t understand it today, doesn’t make you a freak, Keiryn.

He stood ashamed, knowing his words were a direct insult to everything she was. I’m sorry, Taryn. This thing...it’s just taking some getting used to. I didn’t mean to...

Whatever...I don’t even care. She paused, looking around at the Chaos that surrounded them. You need to focus and put things right so we can head back.

Reaching over, he grabbed her hand and squeezed. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me, Taryn. Especially not letting me push you away.

A soft smile curled on her face. Keiryn Falcon, you couldn’t get rid of me even if you wanted to.

As he began working on returning the woods back to normal, the teen paused. Have you ever wondered if our strange connection has something to do with me needing your help to keep this thing inside me contained?

I’m not going to lie, it definitely has crossed my mind a time or two, Taryn replied, motioning for him to finish what he had started.

    •••••

Larkin anxiously awaited their return. A dozen or more scenarios of what was currently taking place between Taryn and Keiryn ran through his head, though none brought even the slightest hint of a smile to his face. Unaware, a growl slipped past his lips.

It sucks, Nalani sighed, stepping up beside him.

Shrugging, he attempted to downplay his own discord in hopes of sparing her further pain.

Seeing through his facade, she smiled warmly. You don’t have to pretend everything’s okay on my account, Larkin. She paused. This entire summer has been nothing more than a roller coaster of discontentment and cruelty, with a dusting of happiness.

    I’m sorry, Nals.

I don’t want your pity, Brother. Just tell Taryn you’ve changed your mind and you can’t live like this anymore.

An awkward smirk formed on his face. There was nothing he wanted more than to draw a line in the sand with Taryn and Keiryn’s relationship, but he had promised her that he would find a way to live with Keiryn in their lives. Anything, Taryn, as long as we’re together, he remembered saying. Those words had left a bittersweet taste in his mouth.

So what about it? Are you willing to lay down some rules to save our relationships? Nalani pushed.

Look, if there was something I could do...but there’s not. If we want to be with them, we have to accept their friendship. End of story. Larkin shook his head and looked to the evening sky in an attempt to settle himself.

Nalani stood quietly until another dagger plunged into her heart. It looks like more than friendship, she snapped, grabbing his attention.

Looking straight ahead, Larkin’s eyes quickly fixated on Taryn and Keiryn, walking arm in arm as they shared a laugh. His pulse quickened at the sight, and he fought with every ounce of his might to let it go. They’re close, Nals...like best friends.

    Best friends, really?

Yes, he snapped, his eyes focused skillfully upon Taryn as she and Keiryn neared.

Hey, guys. What’s going on? Taryn smiled.

Larkin and I were just talking, Nalani grinned, sliding her arm around his waist and giving him a thorough squeeze. The beautiful teen lingered, resting her cheek against his bared chest.

Oh, okay, Taryn shrugged, still smiling. Pushing up on her toes, she kissed Larkin’s cheek. So how are things going with Ronyn and his pack?

Alright, I guess. I haven’t really paid much attention to them. Sort of had other things on my mind the last hour or so, Larkin answered.

Keiryn ran his hand over Nalani’s shoulder and gave her a tug. Why don’t we go for a walk down the beach?

Desperate to get him away from Taryn, she immediately agreed, latching onto his arm. We’ll talk to you guys later, she waved, quickly pulling him away.

Giving Taryn a quick look over his shoulder, Keiryn flashed a beautiful smile, irking Larkin even further.

Let’s go for a swim, Tare-Bear. Just the two of us, Larkin suggested, trying to hide the depth of his discord.

    •••••

An hour later, Taryn and Larkin returned to the shore to find Ibrym and their friends standing, opposing Ronyn and his pack. Tension was heavy, filling the air in palpable waves as neither side appeared willing to back down.

What’s going on, Ibrym? she asked, noting the serious look on each of their faces as she glanced between him and Ronyn.

Larkin, you should take her for a walk, Ibrym stated, trying not to engage her.

Seeing the anger and fear lingering in each of their friend’s eyes, Larkin grabbed her arm and tugged. Let’s go, Taryn.

She pulled back against him, shaking her head. No.

Knowing she wasn’t going to leave without a fight, he decided it best to enlist the help of someone whom she wouldn’t put up a struggle with, her biological brother. Jonesy, help me out here.

As the nervous teen moved toward them, a few from Ronyn’s pack began to snicker, catching Taryn’s attention. Is something funny, she asked, her tone laden with warning.

Go on, Taryn. We’ve got this, Alderyc asserted, standing at his brother’s side.

Let’s go for a walk, Jonesy whispered, holding his hand out for her to take. Hesitantly, she took hold and followed as he began to lead them away.

    Where’s Andyn? she asked.

Kellan and Marlayne took him and Sydney back to the house before things turned crazy.

Stopping in her tracks, she caused him to jerk backwards. What’s happened, Jonesy?

It’s nothing, Taryn. We should keep walking, he insisted.

Before he or Larkin could say a word, she turned on her heel, letting go of his hand and racing back to where the two groups stood. Her eyes shone full of intensity as her stare locked on Ronyn. So that’s it, you have a problem with me?

Ding, ding, ding. Somebody get this girl a prize, he retorted, his voice was full of disdain, garnering laughter amongst his pack.

Let’s hear it. What have I done, or haven’t done to offend you and your pack?

His brows furrowed. You’re an abomination, and my friend here seems to think you deserve a free pass because you showed a little compassion after killing one of our kind, he offered, gesturing to Ibrym.

What happened in the Council’s chamber was unintentional, Ronyn, Ibrym stated adamantly.

Maybe so, but you invited her here. Now none of us who are afflicted can go into the water.

And why is that? Larkin growled.

What if she scrapes herself, gets a cut or even worse, is on her monthly? She’s ruined an entire ocean just by stepping foot in it, Ronyn growled.

Larkin immediately stepped to him. Watch your mouth, he warned, his eyes turning black as the night sky.

Oh yes, the pet werewolf who’s always so quick to jump to her defense. Ronyn paused, a smirk growing on his face. Let’s get real here, Loverboy. The two of you can’t ever...well, you know. If you tried it would be the death of you, Ronyn stated smugly.

The moment the words left Ronyn’s lips Larkin’s fist made contact with his lower jaw, sending him soaring through the air. As the crude man lay in the sand, Larkin seethed, I told you to watch your mouth.

After a few silent moments passed, Ronyn began to laugh. Sitting up, rubbing his jaw, he locked eyes on her great defender. You’re certainly stronger than I’d imagined, but physical strength won’t save you from what she really is.

Stepping up, Jonesy growled, Just what exactly do you believe her to be? His sharp tone and jutting lower jaw surprised many on both sides.

However, Ronyn’s pack saw no real reason to be intimidated. Why don’t you crawl back into the ocean, Runt? one of Ronyn’s pack members chided.

He wouldn’t dare after the scare we put on him today, another laughed.

Taryn stepped up, her heart racing as she battled against the rage fighting to break free from its cage. It’s one thing if you have a problem with me, but when you mess with my family that’s something entirely different. Her words held a distinct bite that echoed through her hollowed eyes.

Back on his feet and moving like a blur to the front of his pack, Ronyn stood only inches away. Are you threatening us? he demanded, his eyes turning black.

Threat, challenge...your call, Ronyn, she replied, her eyes never breaking from his intense stare.

    Then I accept.

Taryn inched closer to him, wearing a telling smirk as the anger that battled internally started to seep out. Better say your good-byes while you still can, she warned.

Feeling the heat from her emotions filling the air around them, Larkin reached his hand out to touch her, but she skillfully maneuvered away. Taryn, don’t do this...

Don’t worry your pretty little head, Loverboy. I’m far more than a Skin-Walker. This isn’t going to take long, Ronyn boasted, gaining cheers from his pack.

Watching as the pair took their stances, Ibrym stepped between them. This is my territory, and I say this isn’t going to happen.

You’re little friend made her choice, and now it’s time to dance, Ronyn grinned with a feverous intensity.

Looking to Taryn, Ibrym shook his head. This isn’t you, Taryn. It’s not the person you want to be.

They shouldn’t have messed with Jonesy, she replied darkly.

Larkin and Ibrym shared a look, but there was nothing either could do to stop what was about to happen. Taryn had formed a shield around herself, blocking Larkin from touching her and restoring her internal calm.

Just as all hope seemed lost, Jonesy stepped between them. If you’re going to do this, then you need to shake hands.

Why should I? Taryn countered, though her tone was much softer when addressing her unknowing brother.

Because, Taryn, you’re not a savage. You shake hands now, and after the battle, that’s it...this thing is over, and no more challenges or fighting.

Swallowing hard to choke down the anger churning in the back of her throat, Taryn nodded and stepped toward Ronyn. With a pursed jaw, she offered her hand to her opponent.

Civility is nothing more than a masquerade, he grumbled, before gripping her hand with all of his might.

The moment his skin touched hers, Taryn’s mind began swimming with numerous unfamiliar images. As the torrent began to subside, a lifetime of Ronyn’s memories took their place. First she saw him playing in the woods with who she could only assume was his younger brother, Rilyn. As the pair ventured deeper in, several of their friends joined them, including Ibrym and Alderyc. The group laughed and played hard until they finally laid down to rest underneath the star-filled night sky. She could hear each of their sweet voices fading as they started to fall asleep.

In a blur, time passed in her vision until it slowed again, showing Ibrym and Alderyc as they stood next to a large U-Haul, saying their good-byes to Ronyn and Rilyn. Sadness and heartache was painfully etched on each of their faces. Beyond the visible hurt lay an eclipsing heartbreak. For reasons she did not yet understand, Ronyn’s heart was filled with fear.

More time passed, and now she saw Ronyn and his younger brother returning from a run in the woods. Upon arriving, there was a new family sitting on the back deck with his parents. Displaying the utmost confidence, he greeted their visitors one-by-one until he stood before a brunette girl with skinny legs. He immediately blushed when she held her hand out to him. In that moment, his pulse quickened and the palms of his hands became sweaty. Taryn felt the immediate love felt as it bloomed for this girl. Her heart ached for him when she realized it was Marlayne. Just like with Ibrym, she now saw Ronyn saying good-bye to the first girl to take his breath away.

Months, possibly years, flew by as she saw Ronyn as a young teenager, leading several others on a run through a lush forest while in the form of a large mountain lion. His pack began to slow and shift back into human-form. The house they headed to was not his own. It belonged to one of his brothers. You guys wait here and I’ll grab us something to drink, his pack brother smiled. A few minutes later, the boy screamed out in agony.

Without thought or fear, Ronyn rushed inside to find his friend kneeling beside his father’s corpse. By the grey hue of his skin, it was obvious the life had been stolen from him. Ronyn called out to Rilyn to phone their home and warn their parents of the lurking danger. But when the call went unanswered, a horrible burn began to ignite in the pit of his stomach. He told Rilyn to stay with their brothers and help call the rest of the families while he ran the short two-miles to their home.

Racing as fast as his paws could carry him, he fought to choke back the tears that had swelled in his eyes. When he and his brother had left that morning, both his mother and father were home. He prayed that his father hadn’t been called upon by the Elder Council, not when their own community needed his protection.

As the rear of his home came into sight, he shifted back to human form and inhaled deeply. A ball formed at the back of his throat, sensing not even a hint of power in the area. Slowly he made his way into the house, through the kitchen and up the stairs to his parent’s bedroom. With his eyes closed, he opened the door. When he finally mustered the courage to look, he instantly dropped to his knees. His worst fear had come true. The Mortari had claimed his mother in his father’s absence.

The fear Taryn had felt through him earlier suddenly made sense. After the Raines had left their community, his father was their solitary defense against the soul-sucking devils. And they attacked during a time when he had been called upon by the Council.

Pain and anger surged through the teen, but it was only the beginning. She watched as they buried thirteen members of their community from that single attack, and a fourteenth, his father, who had fallen during battle that same day. Memories of love and happiness were quickly swallowed by infinite sadness and an unfathomable suffering from losing both parents so savagely.

He and his brother moved to California with the Raines. It was a bittersweet homecoming upon seeing his best friend. Ronyn’s heart was in a constant state of conflict regarding their old friends. Part of him couldn’t help but blame them for what had happened. If they hadn’t moved away, taking all of their blood relatives with them, surely the Mortari’s attack would have been thwarted. The arrangement lasted only a short while before he decided to move back to Canada with a member of his old pack and his father who had survived the attack.

Time passed and Ronyn had successfully recruited a group of families that had members who suffered from the affliction. Things were going well, and he was starting to feel good about his efforts, until the Raines and another family had come to visit. It was then he discovered his first love was now in love with Ibrym. She only had eyes for his friend, crushing him and the hope he’d held onto for so long.

A wave of epic pain, sadness, disappointment, resentment, anger, jealousy and loss washed over Taryn, leaving her breathless and emotionally spent. What had felt like a lifetime to her had passed as only a few seconds to those standing around. Still holding Ronyn’s hand, she peered into his eyes and saw the war waging within. He loved Ibrym and Alderyc like family, but it wasn’t without its difficulties.

What’s wrong with you? he growled.

Withdrawing her hand, she looked at him with tears in her eyes. You win, she mumbled, turning to push through the crowd and heading into the darkness. Larkin rushed after her, Jonesy in his wake.

Momentarily stunned by her declaration, Ronyn quickly shook it off and raised his hands in victory. I told you she was nothing more than hype.

Ibrym shook his head angrily at his friend. You don’t get it. Her walking away...she just spared your life.

The young man quickly shook off his friend’s warning. In a matter of seconds, he was hoisted onto the shoulders of his pack brothers as they cheered in victory.

Further down the beach, Larkin and Jonesy followed after Taryn. Hey, are you alright? Larkin asked. After several silent moments he took hold of her arm. Taryn, what’s going on?

Stopping, she glanced at him and then looked to Jonesy. I need you to do something for me.

    Anything, he replied eagerly.

Find Keiryn and Nalani. Keep them from coming back to the beach. Take Bency if you need to, just don’t let on to what’s happened, she replied adamantly.

    Okay, but for how long?

Taryn shook her head with a confounded look upon her face. I don’t know. Until I come back. And just like that, she turned and began running up the side of the steep embankment.

Do what she asks, Jonesy. We’ll be back when she’s ready, Larkin nodded before running after her.

    CHAPTER TWO

Several miles away, Larkin found Taryn sitting with her legs dangling off the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean. Mind if I join you? he asked, noticing how her eyes were fixated in the distance. She barely shrugged in response. Careful not to encroach upon her, he took a seat a few feet away, exhaling as he looked down over the edge.

More than an hour passed as they sat in silence. A brisk breeze blew around them and Larkin finally spoke, Are you cold?

I’m fine, she smiled softly, looking down.

Larkin immediately sighed, realizing how stupid that must have sounded considering she could control the weather and the temperature immediately around her. Of course you are.

It was sweet of you to ask, Larkin.

You’d think I’d learn by now.

Glancing over at him, she shrugged. Even though I can do most things for myself, it’s nice that you still offer. I appreciate knowing you’re here for me, and that you care.

He thought for a long moment before speaking again. What happened back there, Taryn? I mean the look on your face...you were terrified.

Ronyn’s not a bad person, she replied, side-stepping his observation.

What do you mean he’s not a bad person? You heard all those things he said.

Taryn swallowed hard, still reeling from what she had felt inside of him. He’s suffered enough for ten of our lifetimes, Larkin.

I don’t understand. He was looking for a fight, and he wanted to battle you.

And for a moment it was my intention to make him an example for his family, messing with Jonesy and the others.

You weren’t allowing me to interfere, so what stopped you? he asked, inching closer.

I saw what he’s gone through. I know his pain, and I know he’s a much better person than what he’ll ever know or give himself credit for being.

We’ve all experienced bad things, Taryn. It doesn’t excuse his behavior, Larkin reasoned.

Maybe not, but it shouldn’t be the reason to condemn him either. Besides, I think we both know why I’m a little touchy where family’s involved. She paused. All this time I’ve had a blood brother and I didn’t even know it. Even now I can’t tell him.

Maybe someday, he exhaled, placing his hand over hers. Hoping to lighten her mood, he looked up at the night sky. The stars are certainly out in force tonight.

Even from all the way up here, you can barely see them with all the lights around.

Looking to her and back to the sky, he shrugged, I suppose you’re right.

A wide smile broke across her face and simultaneously every light within a hundred miles went out, leaving them with a spectacular view of the heavens, if only for a short while.

    •••••

Several hours later, they returned to find everyone else had went home to sleep except for Jonesy, Bency, Keiryn and Nalani who sat cuddling around a small fire. The pair said their goodnights before returning to the Raines’ home and snuggling up inside their tent.

    •••••

The next afternoon, Ronyn and his pack had left the area and everything went back to normal. Taryn and Keiryn partnered for some beach volleyball and destroyed their competition while Larkin and Nalani looked on. Afterwards, they jumped in the churning water to cool off a bit.

Splashing around, Keiryn grabbed Taryn and pulled her underwater. They emerged laughing, but instead of releasing her as he had done numerous times before, he leaned in from behind and kissed her cheek.

The second it happened, Keiryn realized what he had just done and immediately let go, but it was too late. Larkin had already jumped to his feet and rushed into the ocean faster than a blur.

On the beach, Ibrym stood, ready to intervene if necessary as the rest of the packs looked on with quiet trepidation. Not a single breath was taken while Larkin stared Keiryn down with Taryn caught in the middle.

Larkin, I was just messing around, Keiryn offered, seeing the darkness in his eyes and only now realizing how close to the edge his old friend was currently standing.

Taryn nodded for him to head back to the beach while she stepped to Larkin. I’m sorry, she whispered, placing a hand over his rapidly beating heart.

Why? Because I’m here? Larkin retorted, his jaw drawn up tightly.

Of course not. She paused, reaching up and caressing his cheek. I never want a day to go by where I’m not with you.

Slowly he turned his eyes downward, catching a glimpse of her face. It pained him to see the guilt and sadness that shone within her eyes. I’m sorry. That was uncalled for.

You’re right, it was. But I understand...this isn’t easy for you.

Stroking her cheek with the back of his fingers, he sighed. I know you love me, Taryn, but I’ve woken up every day since graduation afraid you’re going to realize that you love him more.

I do love Keiryn, but...it’s different from the way that I love you. She paused, moving her hand to the water and with one finger began drawing a figure eight into its surface. Immediately the water stilled around the outline and when she pulled away, the water kept moving in the same infinite pattern. My heart aches intensely from the amount of love I hold for you, even as you’re standing here with me.

    And with Keiryn?

Her eyes never left his as she sighed, unsure of how to explain something she couldn’t understand herself. He’s with Nalani and I’m with you. And I will always and forever be with you.

But you love him too, Larkin replied neutrally, attempting to hide his heartache. Leaning down, he kissed her forehead softly. Turning, he made his way back to the beach where Gerrick, Eben and Thorne waited.

Taryn watched as the foursome soon disappeared from sight, no doubt going for a long run. She thought about the dynamics of the
