I dedicate this book to my kiddos. Who begged me to write a story for them so they could be on the cover. So here’s to hoping I lived up to their expectations with this story that is so far out of my normal it took me ten months to write.

    Note to Reader:

The following story is fiction, purely from my imagination. It was inspired by my kids who wanted me to write a story with them in it. And yes, there is zombies in the story BUT they don’t eat people’s brains!!

"Reality is purely a perception of the individual mind.

It follows, that since no two minds are alike, no two perceptions of reality are alike.

It further follows, that what reality is to one, may seem complete madness to someone else."

    —Yefim Novikov

"Yo, Saddie. Are you coming or not?" Jason hollers out to me.

Huffing out an exasperated breath, I respond, Yes. Coming.

Dropping my hair-brush onto the top of my dresser and, spinning around I grab my bag and takeoff toward the living room where everyone is waiting. My dirty blonde hair flies in every direction as I come to an abrupt stop in front of everyone.

Bout time, Lark says as she hooks elbows with me.

Laughing we all take off walking toward the row of fraternity houses with music beating out of them as we make our way toward Derek’s frat. Reaching the steps to the house, we are greeted by Derek and one of his buddies as they give us each a cup of beer and lead us inside to loud boisterous music and people talking and laughing. Hours pass with us drinking and dancing and laughing about the end of the semester tests.

It isn’t until about three in the morning that I find myself walking home alone with only my jacket wrapped tightly around me. The party broke-up and Lark had left with Chris an hour earlier, so I was left on my own. A sharp breeze has me hunching further into myself to try and stay warm as I continue walking the short two blocks to my off campus apartment.

I turn the corner and my apartment building comes into view, speeding up so I can get warm before climbing into bed for the night. I jump when screaming tears through the night. Scanning the near-by area I spot a couple struggling in the shadows. Making a split second decision I sprint towards them not thinking of the consequences or what it is I’m going to do once I reach them.

Problem? I ask loudly when I get within five feet of the couple.

They both turn to look at me and the woman takes the moment of distraction and knees the man before taking off. I spin and make a dash for my building. A sharp pain slices through my right shoulder, knocking me down. The last thing that flashes through my mind before darkness takes over, is knowing the pavement is going to hurt like a mother when I land.

    THUMP. THUMP. THUMP. THUMP.
