Reviews for The Vampires Next Door
1 rating1 review
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is an interesting premise. On the one hand, I was reminded of the Grimm TV series, because the protagonist is entrusted with a secret responsibility that's been handed down for generations. On the other, it reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because of the characters' ages.
The problem is, it isn't written very well. The grammar is terrible, for one thing: words are confused with others (most often "than" instead of "then"), and when there are multiple characters in a scene, the author doesn't seem to know how to specify which one she's talking about. You end up with a sentence that refers to "she", and then the very next sentence also referring to "she", but talking about a different character. It can be very tiring to figure out what's going on.
There are also plenty of sentence fragments, which make you stop and go, "OK. And then?" (For example, "Turning to the mirror." to describe a character's action... but then that's it. No description of what that character does as/after he turns to the mirror). Missing commas all over the place also add to this confusion.
There's too much telling and not enough showing ("She was frustrated."), and quite a bit of head-hopping, where even though a scene is about one character, the author can't help but tell us what the other characters are thinking or feeling. And no, this isn't just because one of the characters is telepathic!
In general, you have to concentrate hard to read this book, because it's very confusing. It feels a lot like the author was only just learning to speak English when she wrote this, or she was a young child who hasn't fully grasped basic creative writing concepts (she's not, by the way, I saw her picture in the back of the book).
Finally, this edition had no linked table of contents. Personally, I think this is the biggest sin you can commit in an ebook, because, unlike print, the reader has no other way of gauging how long a given chapter's going to be. In fact, I might've been able to forgive many of the problems above, if this one simple thing had been taken care of.
One of the things I appreciated about this book, though, is quite a small thing but made a big impact. It's about the "scene change glyphs", which are typically three asterisks, or a blank line, or sometimes a pilcrow. In this book, they're small icons/graphics depicting a gemstone on a necklace. I thought that was a nice touch, considering gemstones play a pivotal part in the story.
Even with the above, I was gearing up to give this book only a single star... until I got to a short piece at the end, "From the Author". Here, she explains a little bit about the setting of the story (St. Augustine, in Florida), and even includes some photos of the real-world locations in which various pivotal scenes took place. That was nice; I thought it served to ground the reader, especially if, like me, they've never been to the US.
If you're reading this and thinking, "Wow, Graham, it can't be that bad!" or perhaps some of the things I've mentioned would be right up your street, then feel free to give it a read. For myself, though, I certainly won't be continuing with this series.
