About this ebook
They’ve been called the hardest scenes to write in the Romance genre and are often what many authors get wrong. Horribly, cringingly wrong!
But scenes of physical affection between your two main characters don’t have to be uncomfortable to write, find you running the other direction or even deleting them altogether! Because no matter what sub-category your novel is listed in, whether it’s Contemporary, Paranormal, Suspense or Sci-fi, sex sells. And those steamy, heated scenes can make or break a story...or an author.
It’s a skill that you can learn since a viable sex scene needs to be just as carefully crafted as any other important scene of your manuscript. But just like every major plot point, those of the physical affection variety have guidelines and rules based on reader expectations and recommendations!
Inside ‘Write Sex Scenes that Sizzle!’ you’ll discover:
*Why sexy or erotic scenes are both important and expected in today’s Romance market.
*How scenes of the physical kind can create event points in your plot and character arcs...while keeping your readers glued to their e-readers!
*What ten key components comprise the mechanics of getting your sex scenes written right, keep them smoking-hot while engaging your audience.
*The ‘rules’ of writing steamy scenes as defined by the Romance reading market (...which is HUGE by any author’s standards!).
*What words to use and why in ‘showing’ the physical happenings between your characters.
*...and much, much more.
‘Write Sex Scenes that Sizzle!’ is short but packed with tips, explanations and examples that help you, the author, gain confidence as well as readers in an area that so many others fall short in. Written in a conversant, one-on-one style, this how-to guide was put together to help other Romance novelists learn and explore how to write sex scenes that will generate sales, reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations that are nothing short of amazing!

Introduction
In my opinion, the invention of the electronic reader changed the face of writing. Not only has it opened up the world of indie publishing, but it also gave the reader a measure of privacy that they didn’t have before. Gone are the days of hiding your book cover from prying eyes, from people that might judge you from the steamy picture on the front of your paperback. Or from your little ones curious gaze. Why is that lady’s dress undone, Mommy?
is a cringe-worthy question nobody wants to have to answer!
An e-reader is more private for the reading experience and allows guilt-free hours of exploring whatever story we want, whatever tickles our fancy—with no one the wiser! And with that anonymity, readers are able to explore books that they’d previously been secretly yearning to read, but might have considered too racy, too steamy or just downright dirty to bring home from the bookstore. E-readers allow the customer to immediately download and read novels that contain more sex scenes and erotic content than ever before without anyone around them discovering their guilty, but oh-so-pleasurable choices in books.
Additionally, e-readers make it possible for readers to carry books with them all the time. Readers can whip out their device and get lost in another story anywhere—at their kid’s soccer game, during their lunch break, while waiting at the doctor’s office, etc. And since the devices are small, they can read the book of their choice and no one else knows what is on their screen!
Maybe it’s because of that anonymity readers are demanding more from their books. Especially when they knowingly choose an adult novel and even more so when it’s genre is Adult Romance. If they do not enjoy reading tantalizing sex or depictions of the physical act of love, readers will choose books in the YA (Young Adult) or Inspirational/Christian categories for their romances. Because by loose definition, if the novel is geared towards adult readers, there will be scenes of intimacy, of physical affection expressed that run the gamut from steamy to almost lurid. And the readers that enjoy books in the adult romance arena actually EXPECT those scenes, look forward to them and, yes, will even demand them. There are even those readers who use romance novels to learn new things, putting the responsibility on the author to become some sort of guide in the world of sex!
Who am I and how do I know this?
I’m a writer of Women’s Contemporary Romance. Books that are hot, steamy romances with happily-ever-after endings. But I haven’t been doing this very long. I published my first book in Jan 2013 and, to date, I have eleven books out with the twelfth one due to be uploaded/published this evening. And because I was new to the whole writing process, I’ve made every mistake an author can—the learning curve of the writing gig is STEEP! But the payoff for it all is the readers, the ones that contact you to tell you how much they loved your book, how the characters stuck in their heads long after the story had ended and, even better, what they didn’t like or didn’t make sense. Priceless feedback that found me scrambling to work harder, write more and learn how to do it right.
Especially my sex scenes.
And we all know that sex sells. A lot. Enough so that I can support myself by writing my smoking-hot romance novels full time.
What follows is what I’ve learned by the seat of my pants. This is my way but absolutely not the only or best way for you−as an author−in writing your own unique sexy or erotic scenes. You can use my suggestions or toss ‘em based on what works for you. Take bits and pieces of my ideas to see if they help you become more comfortable in writing scenes of that type.
Because readers can tell if you are uncomfortable and have absolutely no problem letting you know when you’ve missed the mark! They may not have the
