"Happy first day of the last week of school!" Emily McDougal said as she walked into the kitchen of her family’s old farmhouse. The kitchen was warm and steamy. It smelled like scrambled eggs and potting soil.

Emily’s father was sitting at the kitchen table drinking tea and correcting tests. He liked to give the high school students he taught lots of tests. He told Emily it kept them on their toes.
