Review
Review of Dragon’s Bow by Charlotte Franks 3/20/2012
I must say that G. R. Holton’s move from science fiction writing to writing this fantasy novel was nothing more than seamless. His transition between genres is like a child playing hopscotch. He knows what square he wants to land in and he hits them dead center. It was refreshing and descriptive. He brought his characters to life and you either loved them or hated them, there was no in between.
If you are into a true good versus evil, sister versus sister story, then get ready for a wild ride.

Prologue
The fable of the Dragon’s Bow is as old as time itself. No one actually knows when it all happened, as it is the oldest story ever told in the land. It seemed that the powerful white wizard Garrett had a companion. That companion was a beautiful golden dragon named Barrannus. Barrannus was his life and soul companion, dedicated to the protection of Garrett and the beautiful golden castle at Chrosus.
But there was another entity in the land, a very dark entity by the name of Malaphus. According to the story, Malaphus was a great white wizard disciple of Garrett’s and was being taught everything of the powers of white magic. However, that wasn’t enough for Malaphus; he wanted more power, and the only way to achieve that level of power was through the dark arts themselves. But Garrett would not teach those to him, and so Malaphus took it upon himself to go into the catacombs of Kratonin and steal the book of knowledge from a demon. He soon learned that it wasn’t that simple, for the demon followed him out of the catacombs and transformed into a black dragon. Once Malaphus figured out how to use the dark magic, he placed the black dragon, now known as Sepherous, under a spell and made him do his bidding.
Once Malaphus felt that he was strong enough, he challenged his mentor, and the battle raged on between teacher and student for centuries. They found that they were both well versed in their craft and neither held an advantage over the other. Since Malaphus could not defeat his teacher, he ordered his dragon to attack the golden dragon Barrannus. The two dragons fought for almost a year, till Barrannus finally fell to the stinging bite of Sepherous.
Garrett was so infuriated that he took the skin and bones of his companion and fashioned a golden bow. Once the bow was finished, he took two blue diamonds that came from the center of the planet and set them in the face of the bow. He then called upon the great arachnid to form a string of steel-like silk to finish the bow off. But the bow was still just a bow until the white wizard himself placed it on a golden altar in the bowels of Chrosus, and transferred every ounce of life energy from himself into the blue diamonds. He then found Malaphus and pulled the bowstring back, and a bolt of white magical energy was formed. He let go of the string and the bolt hit Malaphus dead center, causing him to disintegrate. Unfortunately, the energy use turned the bow from its beautiful gold to one as black and dark as night itself.
Once Malaphus was destroyed, Garrett placed a spell upon the bow that only every fifth generation of Malaphus’s lineage would have the power to use the bow. The elder wizard Garrett then took the bow and cast it into a wall, then placed an altar of protection in front of it. That person would also have to decipher the poem, which would allow them to find the bow. The poem read:
Above the altar the wall shall be,
The secret of the wall to see.
The holder of the heart must own,
And be placed upon the wizard’s stone.
These words were etched on a blackened plaque with silver lettering and placed at the opening to the cave of Sepherous. The dragon himself was placed in a trance of protection and ordered to destroy anyone that tried to get at the Dragon’s Bow. Once this was done, the walls of the castle tarnished and the evils of the island called it home. Garrett’s last act of wizardry was to form himself into the wizard’s stone at the base of the altar. The offspring of Malaphus were now the only ones that could use the power of the bow; that is, if they could find it and decipher the riddle of the wall.
Chapter One:
The Daughters Are Born
It was a beautiful sunny morning, and the sun created a sparkling effect across the Hassen Sea. The main island of Kratonin, which stood majestically in the middle of the sea, was caressed by the sunrise of many brilliant colors.
Seated at a large marble table in the middle of an open hall with great ivory pillars were two people, a man and a woman, enjoying their morning meal. The woman was no ordinary woman. She was considered to be the most beautiful and voluptuous woman in all the land. Her name was Athena, but she was also known as the White Witch
. Athena’s golden blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders and just touched the crevasse of her buttocks. Her eyes of steel blue seemed to be able to cut through the morning fog, and her body was the epitome of perfection. The witch Athena was beloved throughout the land, for she always helped out the needful and only used her magic for the betterment of everyone and the protection of the island.
The gentleman seated with her was her husband Cassious. Cassious was very strong with a muscular physique, short wavy blonde hair, and the bluest of eyes like those of Athena. He was not only considered one of the most handsome males, but was the leader of the army and the best hunter throughout the kingdom.
Not everyone felt devoted to the special couple. In the dark forests of Chrosus, an island on the other side of the Hassen Sea and the Seroto Desert, lived Malahan, a very wicked and evil dark wizard, the great, great, great grandson of Malaphus. He had jet-black hair that shaped his rounded head. His eyes were as black as night and his skin was as pale as the desert sand itself. The wizard wanted nothing more than to control the whole kingdom, but every time that he had attempted to do so, he had been thwarted by the white witch’s magic and the people of Kratonin. This was largely due to the fact that his dark magic was less powerful than Athena’s white magic. The only way that he would ever be able to take over the planet was to utilize the fabled Dragon’s Bow to control the inhabitants of Kratonin. The bow was said to be located deep within the caverns of Chrosus, and had such strong magic that a single shot could be used to destroy an entire army. Unfortunately, not only was the bow hard to find, it also had a protector; a huge black dragon named Sepherous, which no one had owned or controlled since the wizard Garrett had passed away.
Malahan’s main problem was that, even if he could get to the bow, he could not use it, because it could only be used by the next generation of his lineage. The power to wield the bow skipped every four generations, and Malahan was the fourth. If he could only have offspring then they could use the bow and take over the planet with him.
But just to have a child was not enough for Malahan. He knew that if he could somehow have a magical mate that the offspring would be the most powerful being on the planet, and he could then use that child to control the world. But how and by who? There were not
