He read a few newspaper articles that described the great amounts of energy to be saved by living underground. Those newspaper articles peaked his interest, and Mr. Wampler soon began to research the subject. The few books that he found on the subject were written in technical language and were difficult to understand. He was thereby inspired to write a book for the layman to use. Underground Homes offers the layman a complete and thoughtful approach to planning, building, and inhabiting an earth-sheltered home. The author takes the reader step by step through a potential maze of construction problems. He uses simple language and numerous diagrams and illustrations to answer the questions people ask most often about underground homes. Underground Homes also addresses specific problems associated with subterranean homes--determining the local water table, reinforcing concrete with steel, using skylights and windows--and discusses the common psychological barriers to living underground, while presenting solutions for and insights into all of these problems. Mr. Wampler designed and built his own underground home, where he resides in Norman, Oklahoma.view less
