El análisis de la humanidad frente a la amenazade la modernidad es tema central de sus novelas, entre las que destacan Hombre en suspenso (1944), La víctima (1947), Las aventuras de Augie March (1953), Carpe Diem (1956) y Henderson, el rey de la lluvia (1959).
También ha reflexionado acerca del intelectual judío frente al mundo que lo rodea, en libros como Herzog (1964) o El planeta de Mr. Sammler (1970), ambas novelas galardonadas con el National Book Award. En 1976 obtuvo el Premio Pulitzer por su libro El legado de Humboldt y, tres meses después, se le otorgó el Premio Nobel de Literatura.view less
