About this audiobook
From the critically acclaimed author of Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune comes a new delightful novel about exploring all the magical possibilities of life in the most extraordinary city of all: Paris.
Vanessa Yu never wanted to see people's fortunes—or misfortunes—in tealeaves.
Ever since she can remember, Vanessa has been able to see people's fortunes at the bottom of their teacups. To avoid blurting out their fortunes, she converts to coffee, but somehow fortunes escape and find a way to complicate her life and the ones of those around her. To add to this plight, her romance life is so nonexistent that her parents enlist the services of a matchmaking expert from Shanghai.
After her matchmaking appointment, Vanessa sees death for the first time. She decides that she can't truly live until she can find a way to get rid of her uncanny abilities. When her eccentric Aunt Evelyn shows up with a tempting offer to whisk her away, Vanessa says au revoir to California and bonjour to Paris. There, Vanessa learns more about herself and the root of her gifts and realizes one thing to be true: knowing one's destiny isn't a curse, but being unable to change it is.

A sweet, simple romantic story that reminded me of Chocolat (the movie) in style. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

Adorbs. Classic romance with a teensy bit of magic on the side. You already know how this book goes, so if it's your thing, it's your thing. I wanted to smash heads together by the end, because what the heck that relationship really was a whirlwind, but that's my usual reaction to romance. Even despite my curmudgeonly attitude, I found enough enjoyment here that I picked up another romcom, so there's that. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I love the magical imagery in this book. It made it a fun spin on a rom-com romp through Paris. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

When Vanessa Yu made her first fortune-telling at the age of three, she had hated that she had this power. After one fortune-telling of the bride at her cousin's wedding, she decided she needed help from her aunt, the other person with the same power. By going to Paris to continue her lessons, Vanessa encounters love, revelation, and secrets from her aunt's past that brings an epiphany and change for herself and her outlook in life
I enjoyed this book because of the heroine's self-discovery, the descriptions of scrumptious food, family dynamics, and romance. I would have liked some more details of certain characters and the future of a set of siblings in relation to a certain situation. Overall, the book has a nice vibe and I look forward to more Roselle Lim books.

A cute romantic comedy has east meeting west in this story of Vanessa Yu. She is part of a large extended family in the Bay area. All her cousins are getting married, but she vows to stay single, partly by choice and partly because she’s clairvoyant and she hates this skill. When a series of tragic predictions send her to Paris under the guidance of her aunt, she learns to accept her fate and finds romance. The bossy, nosy family members are what give this story life and if it isn’t the romance and the family you enjoy there’s always the food. There always seems to be food wherever Vanessa goes. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5

I picked up this book because I loved the first one. It was nice to meet new characters in this book. It had some of the same type of charm as the first book. However, I did miss the humor and the close emotional connection I experienced with all of the characters in the first book.
Vanessa was a good lead character. On one hand it would be cool to have her ability but on the other hand; it can become a burden. Thus I felt for Vanessa. She really was just trying to live her life. The location of Paris was nice. As I was reading this book, I could picture everything playing out in my mind.
My overall feelings about this book was middle of the road. There were moments that I was really digging this book and other moments where I found myself skimming it. Yet, I do look forward to seeing what the next book is like. I hope it is like the first one.
