About this audiobook

Funerary rituals show us what people thought about mortality; how they felt about loss; what they believed came next. From Roman cremations and graveside feasts, to deviant burials with heads rearranged, from richly furnished Anglo Saxon graves to the first Christian burial grounds in Wales, Buried provides an alternative history of the first millennium in Britain. As she did with her pre-history of Britain in Ancestors, Professor Alice Roberts combines archaeological finds with cutting-edge DNA research and written history to shed fresh light on how people lived: by examining the stories of the dead.

Professor Alice Roberts does a wonderful job of bringing complex anthropology and archeology to a palatable layperson's format. It is both well researched and informative and detailed enough to capture and hold even those with a strong background in the field. Some others indicated that it was difficult to understand but they probably should have simply taken a few minutes to look up the technical terms. There was not an aggressive amount, but some are absolutely required to make sense of the science. This was a great find and I wish there was more content like this with solid scholarly research on this app.

Much better than the first book. The author dropped the daydreaming and sticked to the facts, in a very professional tone. She also left the rambling and mandatory moral preaching to the last chapter, so it's easy to skip.
I really liked how much new stuff I learned about a misrepresented era, as well as the occasional glimpses into how archaeology really happens. Narration was OK. Would listen again (except the chapter about baby burials, be warned).

Could not understand the narrator's accent. She spoke really quickly.
