Harriet Beecher Stowe

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) was an abolitionist, writer, and teacher at Hartford Female Seminary. This narration by Susie Berneis takes this epic novel to another level altogether. So beautifully read, so expressive and heartfelt, narration doesn't get much better than this.

I read it in an adapted form when I was six years old, and it moved me to tears. I read it two more times, once at nineteen and again at thirty, and my opinion changed drastically. A terrible story about slavery, but even worse, the submissive and fatalistic attitude of the slave Tom. (Translated from Spanish)

A beautiful and raw book at the same time. It reveals to us the cruelty of humanity and how unfair it can be. But most importantly, it shows us that pain and suffering can grow a lush tree of faith and hope within our hearts that will accompany us beyond death. The black slaves have not died; they live in the words of this author who has granted them eternity and justice. (Translated from Spanish)

It has been a story that leaves a mark on you; as people, just for being of a different color, they were treated that way, and they were forced to leave their own families. It touched my heart; I read it in physical form before. (Translated from Spanish)

One of the books that has most impacted me as a person is this book, to be honest. When I read it, I experienced human pain in its fullest expression and went through a truly beautiful moment in the reading, the fact of putting myself in others' shoes. I love it. (Translated from Spanish)

Reading Uncle Tom's Cabin often results in a wake-up call from childhood to the cruelty of the world. Slavery, racial supremacy is depicted in this novel. But so is love and the quest for equality and respect for human rights. It is cruel and real. Through its cruelty, we will know if we are sensitive to the pain of others, and in all its harsh reality, we can feel the injustice. This type of novel defines us by awakening our feelings. A very engaging novel for its time, it could also be considered a piece of social criticism.

A great book that I liked from start to finish and that especially shows us the difficulties faced by Afro-descendants and the harsh treatment by the English colonists. (Translated from Spanish)

Very good. The sad reality of the slavery era, which provokes anger and helplessness on one hand, and on the other, the warmth, simplicity, and selflessness of its main characters that causes great admiration. An exciting story. (Translated from Spanish)

Really interesting vision and perspective on slavery and the dramas that slaves and members of the Afro-descendant race had to face in North America. A constant search for freedom in a context of slavery. (Translated from Spanish)

Harriet Beecher wrote this book at least 10 years before Abraham Lincoln emancipated the enslaved blacks in the U.S. This makes it even more valuable. It is a quasi-documentary account as, the author notes, the book captures what she herself saw or heard; in addition to gathering various testimonies about slavery in the southern part of her country in the mid-19th century. Honestly, I don't remember why I read the book; I know it was by my own will, I was moved by its stories, but the ending broke my heart.
Even though I know I don't remember it, I know I read it.
Just to clarify, I even lost the book... (Translated from Spanish)

An impactful description of the cruelest and most brutal slavery I have ever read in my life, better than Bug Jargal by Victor Hugo, which is no small feat. (Translated from Spanish)

I cried and cried and I loved it! The way the author appeals to empathy and critiques the hypocrisy of Christian morality is admirable. Undoubtedly a book that moved and encouraged reflection for thousands in a time when being cruel was acceptable as long as the victim was not white. (Translated from Spanish)

It tells two parallel stories: that of the black man from the house and the black man from the field. The first, Uncle Tom, complacent and obedient, unable to imagine a future outside the plantation; the second, willing to do anything to achieve his freedom and that of his family.
