About the Author
Welcome to the mafia
James had always thought his life was average. School, basketball, annoying teachers, and weekend hangouts in the crowded streets of Zamira City. Nothing special. Nothing strange. Just a seventeen-year-old trying to pass exams and dodge heartbreak.
But that illusion shattered on a rainy Thursday.
He was walking home alone, hoodie soaked, headphones buzzing with broken bass. The city lights blurred through the downpour, and he almost missed the black SUV that rolled up beside him.
Hey!
he shouted as the car screeched to a halt.
Three men in black stepped out - sharp suits, cold eyes, and zero hesitation.
Before he could scream, a cloth was pressed to his face. The scent was sharp and chemical.
Darkness.
James awoke to a dimly lit room. Not the kind you’d find in a hospital or someone’s home. This place had red carpets, bulletproof windows, and golden lion statues guarding the entrance. A silent reminder: this was no ordinary place.
You’re awake,
said a voice. Gravelly, calm, terrifying.
James turned to find an old man in a wheelchair. Thin. Pale. But his eyes-those eyes burned with authority.
I know you have questions,
the man continued. But time is short. My name is Dario Romano… and I am your father.
James blinked. What?
You were hidden from this world for your safety. But I’m dying, and the Romano legacy cannot end with me.
Legacy?
I run the Romano Syndicate,
Dario said. The largest mafia empire from Zamira to Naples. And you, James… you are my heir.
James stumbled back. No. No, this is some kind of joke. I’m not-I’m just a kid!
You were never just a kid,
Dario said. You were born into blood and secrets. Now it’s time you step into the truth.
The next few days were a blur. Guns. Codes. Enemies. Power. James was introduced to a life he never knew existed - one where money and murder walked hand in hand.
But behind the scenes, shadows were moving.
Among them: Luca. James’ stepbrother. Raised by Dario. Trained to kill. Groomed to lead.
To Luca, James was a mistake. A ghost from the past stealing his throne.
So one night, while James was beginning to understand the world he was meant to rule… Luca struck.
The gunshot echoed through the Romano estate.
James fell.
Blood. Cold. Silence.
But death wasn’t the end.
It was only the beginning.
He woke up again, but this time… there was no ceiling. No walls. Only mist.
A figure stood over him - tall, cloaked in black, with eyes like collapsing stars.
Welcome to the afterlife,
the figure said, voice echoing like thunder in a cave.
Who… who are you?
James whispered.
The figure smiled. I go by many names. But you, James… you may call me the Grim Reaper.
The Reaper extended a skeletal hand.
You were betrayed. Murdered. Forgotten. But I offer you a second chance. A darker one.
James stared at him, breathless.
You can return. Not as a boy, but as a reaper. Vengeful. Powerful. Eternal. But only if you accept my offer…
The Reaper leaned in close, and for the first time, James saw his reflection in the being’s eyes.
…become the next Lord of Death.
The price for a life
James hesitated.
His hands were cold. His mind even colder.
He looked the Grim Reaper in the eye - those hollow, burning voids - and gave a quiet nod.
I accept.
The Reaper didn’t smile. He didn’t even blink.
Instead, he leaned in and whispered,
You don’t return to the world of the living without leaving something behind. Life is given… but death takes its fee.
A sharp wind blew through the void, even though there was no air.
And just like that, James was gone.
James didn’t understand him at first but sooner or later he will.
—-
He opened his eyes outside a church close to a cemetery.
Breathing.
No wounds at all. As if nothing had happened to him. He stood up and went back home.
Real air. Real walls. Real tears from his mother’s eyes as she fell to the floor and hugged him like she’d seen a ghost - because she had.
It took days to adjust. Even the doctors couldn’t explain it.
But James knew better.
He didn’t return the same.
—-
A week later, he found himself walking through the gates of a new school. A fresh start, they said.
But the air shifted when he stepped in.
Heads turned. Conversations stopped. Eyes followed.
It wasn’t his clothes.
It was his aura.
He walked like he didn’t belong - not because he didn’t fit in, but because something about him transcended the place.
There was a presence around him - thick and invisible, like fog only the soul could feel.
Some swore they felt cold when he passed.
Some whispered: Who’s the new guy?
What none of them saw was what followed him.
James’s shadow.
It stretched just a little longer than it should.
Moved just a little slower than his steps.
And sometimes… looked nothing like him at all.
—-
He didn’t notice anyone at first. He didn’t care.
But Jake did.
Jake was the kind of guy who wore headphones even when his playlist was off.
The kind who cracked jokes that weren’t always funny but somehow still made you laugh.
He had big energy and no sense of personal space - and for some reason, he decided James was his new best friend.
Yo! You’re the new guy, huh?
Jake grinned. "You’ve got the whole I-see-dead-people
