    CREATING THE BASICS

    Discover the joy of scrap quilting with strips and crumbs. It’s earth friendly and creatively stimulating. Sewing tiny scraps into crumb fabric or strips into sets gives you a colourful way to spice up your quilt projects.

    MAKING CRUMB FABRIC

    1 Find two similar-sized scraps. If they don’t have a straight edge, cut one. Place the scraps right sides together and sew along straight edge. Open out and press.

    2 Straighten up edges as needed.

    3 For odd-shaped pieces, line up straight edges on the lines on your mat so the pieces create a 90-degree angle and angled pieces overlap slightly.

    4 Cut through the overlapped pieces so the angles match.

    5 I like to place triangular-shaped scraps in a pile. When I find two of a similar size, angle and shape, I sew them together.

    6 Chain four or five of these units through your machine (see General Techniques, Piecing).

    7 Press your two-piece unit then find a scrap that will fit along one edge. Place right sides together and sew to
