Ravi the Rhino and the Shield of Honesty - Madison Alexandra Daniels

    Introduction

Ravi was a young rhino who lived deep in the jungle, where the trees grew tall and their leaves whispered secrets to the breeze.

Ravi wasn't the biggest rhino in the jungle yet, but he was powerful and tough and had a lustrous gray hide that shone in the morning sun. He liked to splash around in muddy rivers, race the monkeys (who almost always won), and play chase with Tara the tiger cub and Milo the monkey. Ravi's laugh was so loud that it echoed through the woods. When he stomped his feet in delight, it felt like the ground was laughing with him.

But Ravi had a small difficulty.

You know, Ravi had trouble telling the truth occasionally. Not because he meant to be mean—oh no, Ravi had one of the greatest hearts in the jungle. But there were occasions when telling the truth was scary.

He was afraid his pals would laugh at him when he messed up. He was scared that people would be furious at him if he forgot to do something. And sometimes, when Ravi wanted to seem braver, faster, or stronger than he actually was, he made tiny anecdotes that weren't exactly true.

At first, the falsehoods seemed like little rocks on the ground in the woods. But Ravi soon discovered that even little rocks can build up and become a mountain that is too hefty to carry.

The Day of the Broken Branch

Ravi was practicing his charges by a creek one bright morning. He put his head down, dug his paws into the earth, and sprinted as quickly as his small, strong legs could take him. He hit a branch that spanned across the river with a resounding CRACK! The limb broke in half and fell into the creek below.

Oh no! Ravi gasped, and his ears twitched in fear. That branch was crucial since it was the small bridge that many animals used to go across the stream. Without it, it would be hard for tortoises, frogs, and even some monkeys to cross.

Ravi's heart raced. He didn't mean to break it. Should he talk to someone? Should he say it was his fault? Should he keep silent and hope no one sees?

He had a hard time making the choice. And thus, for the first time, Ravi had to answer the question that would come up again and again in all of his adventures:

Is it braver to keep the truth to yourself or to say it out loud?

    What Being Honest Really Means

That question is for everyone, not only Ravi.

Being honest doesn't imply we won't ever mess up. Everyone spills juice, forgets promises, or smashes stuff by mistake. And being honest doesn't imply saying everything that comes to mind, especially if it could harm someone's feelings.

Being honest means being able to trust someone. It takes bravery to acknowledge, Yes, that was me. I messed up, but I want to correct it. Alternatively, one might say, I don't know the answer, but I'm open to learning.

Ravi learned to be honest by being brave, not with his horns or his stomps, but with his heart.

    The Shield of Truth

One night, Ravi encountered a wise old turtle who listened carefully as Ravi told him about his troubles.

Ravi said gently, I don't always tell the truth. Sometimes I'm scared. There are instances when I don't want people to be frustrated with me. What if my pals don't like me as much if I'm honest?

The turtle's eyes sparkled with kindness. He answered, Ravi, honesty is like a shield. It protects you when you carry it with you, but not from mistakes. It protects you from fear. At first, the truth may seem weighty, but it is lighter than any falsehood you will ever bear. The longer you hold on to a lie, the heavier it becomes. But what about honesty? Being honest will always set you free.

The turtle told Ravi to picture that he had an invisible shield. Every time he stated the truth, the barrier got stronger and brighter, until no shade of dread could dull it.

Ravi thought it would be cool to have a shield. Rhinos were protectors
