To my family and friends. The ocean, like life, is full of mystery. There are many truths lying beneath the surface. Never be afraid to go looking for what is really out there and discover the truth for yourself!
– Dr. J
The Megalodon
The megalodon was a prehistoric shark that lived and swam in the ocean a long time ago. They are the ancestors of the modern-day sharks. They were one of the largest predators to have ever lived on either land or sea. The size of the megalodon was approximately 60 feet long. They had sharp rigid teeth that measured 7 inches long. Their jaws were strong and could open wide enough to swallow a person in one gulp. Megalodons lived in the oceans around the globe. Over time, they migrated to warmer waters. Eventually, megalodons became extinct at the end of the Pliocene era when the earth experienced global cooling causing their bodies to not be able to survive the cold temperatures in the deep ocean water.
The World Ocean
The World Ocean is a large body of water that covers most of the world. The World Ocean crosses over the Atlantic, Arctic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. The ocean provides people and organisms with most of the water we use each day to live. Still today, little is known about what lies in the deepest depths of the ocean. Most of the ocean has never been explored mainly because the ocean is so deep and dark that the pressure of the water would crush anyone who attempted to travel down to the depths where light can no longer be seen.
At the bottom of the ocean, there are volcanoes, fissures, mountainous ranges, the Mariana, and other trenches. It is here that many unique organisms and creatures make their homes away from the busy life on land. The ocean remains a place of mystery and legend said to be full of mysterious sea creatures that we cannot yet understand. Much is still left to be discovered from the secrets kept down below. Maybe one day all the secrets of the ocean will be available to us so we can fully understand its mystery and beauty.
Great White Shark
The great white shark is a large shark that can reach approximately 20 feet long. They can live up to 70 years old. The great white shark is a fierce predator in the ocean that will eat marine mammals, orcas, dolphins, pinnipeds, and even other sharks. Their bodies are gray and white with two side fins and a tail fin. On top of their body, there is a dorsal fin that helps to keep the shark stabilized and upright in the water. The top dorsal fin also helps to keep the great white shark from turning over on its side making it vulnerable to attacks from other ocean creatures. Finally, great white sharks are excellent swimmers who can use their tails to generate thrust and save energy that allows them to swim long distances without getting tired.
Horseshoe Crab
Horseshoe crabs are considered arthropods. They are the only living members of the order Xiphosura. While they are called crabs, they are not crustaceans. Instead, horseshoe crabs are chelicerates which makes them more like spiders and arachnids than crabs. They are primarily found on the muddy bottom of the ocean. Horseshoe crabs have been around since the Triassic period. The body of the horseshoe crab is protected by a hard exoskeleton or shell. When they grow, the horseshoe crab sheds its old shell and forms a new one that is bigger for more protection. This shell helps to protect the horseshoe crab from its many predators including sharks and sea turtles which is why they can still be found in the ocean today.
Jelly Fish
Jellyfish lived in the ocean long before the age of dinosaurs. They have a gelatin-like structure in their bodies. Their heads are soft and can bounce along in the water. Their bodies are elongated, and they have very long tentacles that they use to propel themselves through the water. Jellyfish also squirt water through their mouths to help move them through
