    Preface

Space has always been an endless source of wonder and mystery, and in Emery and the Key to the Cosmos, we embark on an adventure where curiosity and discovery know no bounds. Just like Emery, a young inventor with a heart full of questions, this story invites young readers to explore the vastness of the universe and learn about the forces that govern it. Through Emery's journey across galaxies, from the Moon to distant black holes, children will discover how gravity, motion, and even the speed of light shape our world and beyond. The adventures are not only fun and imaginative but are also rooted in real scientific concepts that spark curiosity and understanding about space. This book is an invitation to dream big, to question the universe around us, and to look up at the stars with awe and wonder.

    Chapter 1: The Mysterious Key

Emery couldn’t remember a time when she wasn’t tinkering with something. Her small workshop, tucked into the corner of her family’s house, was a mess of tools, gears, wires, and half-finished projects. There was the old radio she was trying to fix, the tiny clock she was attempting to redesign, and a heap of mechanical parts that had once belonged to a disassembled drone. It all made sense to her. Every bit of scrap metal and every old part held potential, and Emery knew how to unlock it.

Today, she was on a new project—a creation she called the Whirly Thing. It wasn’t a machine that did anything in particular. It just spun and twirled when you pressed a button, sending a blur of colors into the air. Emery’s goal was simple: make something fun. But no matter how hard she worked, she couldn’t get the thing to spin right.

Why do you always make the weirdest things? her brother, Finn, asked from the doorway. He leaned against the frame with his arms crossed, watching her with a raised eyebrow. Finn didn’t get it. He wasn’t an inventor. To him, everything was either useful or it wasn’t.

This one’s going to be different, Emery muttered, focusing on the spinning mechanism.

I’m sure it will be, Finn said, stepping inside and reaching for the cluttered table. By the way, there’s something odd in the attic. Grandma said you might want to see it.

Emery looked up, curiosity flickering in her eyes. The attic? What’s in the attic?

I don’t know, Finn shrugged. She said it was a ‘thing’ for you. Not sure what that means.

Intrigued, Emery stood up. The attic was a place of mystery—dark, dusty, and filled with old family treasures. She had explored it as a child but hadn’t thought about it in years. Today, however, something felt different. Maybe it was the way Finn spoke about it—like whatever was hidden there was waiting for her.

Okay, okay, let’s go, Emery said, dusting off her hands and following Finn up the stairs. The floorboards creaked beneath their feet as they made their way to the attic door, which was slightly ajar.

Inside, the attic was dimly lit, the light filtering through a small, round window. Boxes of old clothes, photo albums, and forgotten knick-knacks were stacked high, their contents spilling out like memories long forgotten. But in the middle of the room, there was a small wooden chest that caught Emery’s attention. It was plain, unassuming, with a brass clasp holding it shut.

Is this it? Emery asked, walking over to it.

Finn nodded. Grandma said it was yours. She didn’t explain why.

Emery bent down, her fingers brushing against the brass clasp. It wasn’t anything special at first glance, but as soon as her fingers touched it, a strange sensation ran through her. The clasp felt warm, almost alive, like it was responding to her touch.

With a quick flick of her wrist, she opened it.

Inside was an odd assortment of things—papers, an old map, and a small, intricate key. The key was the most curious part. It wasn’t just any key; it was made of a metal that shimmered in the dim light, almost as if it were reflecting the stars themselves. The shape of the key was unusual, with loops and spirals that seemed to defy logic. It didn’t look like it belonged to any ordinary lock.

Emery held the key in her hand, a sense of awe filling her chest. She had never seen anything like it.

Do you think it’s important? Finn asked, eyeing the key.

I don’t know, Emery said softly, turning it over in her fingers. It felt warm, as if it was pulsing with some hidden energy. She wasn’t sure how, but she knew in that moment that it wasn’t just an ordinary object. This key had a purpose, and it was calling to her.

Maybe it opens something, she said, more to herself than to Finn. Maybe it opens a door. A door to somewhere amazing.

Finn raised an eyebrow but didn’t argue. He was used to his sister’s wild ideas, but Emery’s curiosity was contagious. Well, you always find the coolest stuff. What’s next?

Emery hesitated, feeling the weight of the key in her palm. She wasn’t sure where it would lead her, but she felt the pull—like something far beyond her workshop, beyond the house, was waiting for her.

I’m going to find out, she said, determination in her voice.

With that, Emery tucked the key into her pocket and turned toward the stairs. There was something out there, something waiting to be unlocked, and she had the feeling that this key was the answer. The idea of discovery burned brightly in her chest, stronger than the curiosity she had always felt when tinkering with inventions. This was different. This felt... bigger.

As Emery stepped outside into the cool evening air, she could feel the weight of the world shifting. It was as though the key was a bridge to something she couldn’t quite comprehend yet. The stars above twinkled with promise, as if they too were waiting for the moment she would unlock whatever secret this key held.

Where do we start? Finn asked, following her.

I don’t know yet, Emery said, glancing up at the stars. But I have a feeling we’ll find out soon.

And with that, Emery took her first step into the unknown, the key tucked safely in her pocket and her heart racing with excitement. Little did she know, her adventure was about to begin in a way she couldn’t possibly imagine.

    Chapter 2: First Portal

Emery’s fingers trembled as she held the key. It was strange, like it wasn’t made of metal at all. The smooth surface seemed to pulse in rhythm with her heartbeat. She walked into the living room, where her father was sitting in his favorite chair, reading the paper.

Hey, Dad, look at this, she said, holding out the key.

Her father glanced up over his glasses. He was a man of few words, preferring to keep things simple and steady. Emery could tell he was intrigued, but he didn’t show it. What is it?

I found it in the attic, in a box from Grandma, she said, her voice a mix of excitement and disbelief. But there’s something weird about it. I think it’s a key... but it’s not like any key I’ve ever seen.

Her father set the paper down and studied the key for a moment, his brow furrowed. Looks like something from a puzzle box or an old lock. Maybe it’s a family heirloom.

It’s more than that, Emery said softly, almost to herself. It feels... different.

Her father smiled. Well, I’m sure you’ll figure it out. You always do.

With a small nod, Emery left the house. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the key was calling to her, beckoning her towards something important. As she walked down the street, her footsteps echoing in the quiet evening, the feeling of the key’s weight in her pocket seemed to grow heavier, like it was waiting for her to discover its secret.

By the time she reached the edge of town, Emery had already decided she was going to find out what the key opened. The stars overhead twinkled like tiny eyes, watching her,
