INTRODUCTION

I am a writer. I have been, since I was seven years old. Writing is one of my favourite things to do in the entire world. Since I was seven, my dream has been to publish novels. Due to the cut-throat publishing world, I feared that my dream may never happen. But then about a decade ago, I learned about how writers have been able to easily self-publish their novels with Amazon. And I began self-publishing. For writers, this option is a blessing. Self-publishing is easy, has barely any start-up costs, and writers can get up to 70% royalties. It’s perfect, really. No need to send out manuscripts to publishing companies, only to receive dozens of rejection letters. Now, writers are able to write and publish their books much faster than traditional publishing.

As a writer, I am highly motivated to sell as many copies as I can. If I don’t produce enough quality ebooks, I don’t get paid. And if I don’t get paid, I won’t be able to pay my monthly expenses, such as rent, and bills. Money is a huge motivator. But being a writer is so much more than just earning money. Writing is a skill, something that you’ll need to work on for hundreds of hours until you are able to write well. And when you finally learn the craft of writing, you will able to masterfully pen as many novels and short stories to your heart’s content.

For me, writing is the best job I could ever ask for. I get to set my own hours, and work from home. I get to choose which projects I work on, and choose the non-fiction topics that I am interested in. I enjoy writing immensely. Always have, always will.

Although I try my best every day to write a few thousand words, that isn’t always the easiest thing in the world. Life gets in the way. There are days when it is nearly impossible to find enough time to write. And some days, I just can’t seem to fight past the writer’s block. I can sit at the computer for hours and hours, trying desperately to be productive – but I am barely able to write more than a few hundred words. That can be very disappointing. Other days, the words flow out of me. Unstoppable, inspired writing.

I am writing this book, because I want to help as many writers as I can. For the fledging author, they may be overwhelmed with the amount of knowledge they need to accrue. Keywords, book titles, different writing programs, punctuation, grammar, plot arcs . . . so much to learn. It will really be a learning curve, trying to figure out everything on your own. But with the help of this book, you won’t be alone.

Writing can be exhausting. Day after day, you’ll have to sit at your phone or computer and write. The days will be long. Day after day, month after month, years and years of writing. Writing is also an incredibly rewarding activity. If you’re going to dedicate this huge chunk of time to writing, it better be something that you love. I have been writing for most of my life, despite working full-time, and having all sorts of obligations and distractions in my life. If I can do it day in and out, I have a hundred percent faith that you can, too. So, let’s get started.
