Chapter One
THE FIVE CHILDREN WHOSE NAMES ALL START WITH THE SAME LETTER
It's a cloudy and carefree day. The combines and tractors can be heard all around the fields, working their way to our small farm. 'Kitty Mom,' I wish you would stop moving those kittens around. You are going to wear their little necks out. I promise you, no one is going to hurt them!" smiled the weathered, old, red barn.
What in the world is that noise?
'Kitty Mom' looked up and said, It sounds like Mr. Crensall is coming up the lane in his old pickup truck. The racket reminds us that the carburetor and muffler are in their normal need of repair.
Old Red said, Mr. Crensall and his family have owned this farm for nearly a century. In fact, the old house has not seen life for twenty years. He comes down every so often to check on me, get hay out of my hay mow and make sure no four-legged or two-legged creatures decide to take up residence.
'Kitty Mom grinned.
Mrs. Crensall used to bring me and my new litter some warm milk in a tin pie pan. That was sooo nice."

Look, now she is walking all around, and she has a big smile on her face. She is looking at us. I cannot hear all she was saying, but just before she got back into the truck, she said, Mr. Blyck and the children will be out tomorrow.
The excited, old red barn said, "Did you hear that? Children. Oh my, 'Kitty Mom,' I know I am not going to sleep a wink tonight!"
The sun is shining, and I can see a spattering of white clouds. Hurry up, 'Kitty Mom.' Tell O'Possom to get down here. Now, you two listen up. You need to be on your best behavior. No hissing. and O'Possom, you might want to stay awake for this, especially since we know you only pretend to sleep most of the time anyway.
'Kitty Mom' jumped off a haystack where she had been in charge of watching for any movement coming down the lane. Look, a car is coming down the lane."Oh! My, Oh! My goodness. I can't believe my eyes! Mrs. Blyck, Mr. Blyck and ...wait a minute, I am counting--a little blonde girl with pink socks, a pink bow in her hair and an itsy bitsy dress with flowers on it, is holding Mrs. Blycks' hand and Oh my! One, two, three, four boys are tumbling out of the station wagon and running in all directions."
Big Red said, "Shhh, I hear Mr. Blyck talking to Mr. Crensall about buying
