About this ebook

Washed a shore, by time and fate. Bound by him, what will sink and what will float? These seas far too often mirror your hands, but as gentle as they maybe, these seas are rough and full of the unexpected. I expect you, yes the one reading this, to take heed for what you may see or hear is not in fact as accurate as you may lead yourself to believe. It's calling me, must be going now....Bye for now.

    To my Dearest Veronica,

As promised, she's a beauty. You sure this is for her. I'm positive. In fact, I know she'll love it. I haven't been the best father figure to her. My hands are stained like my brother's, but this here vessel. Will guide her; to wherever her heart may   lay.

    Tribute

These forests burn with love and passion. For all the awaiting arms, friends, lovers, and all those I hold close. I wouldn’t imagine writing this if not for you. Amidst the forest ground of ash, we grow anew and start a beautiful chapter ahead. Rose petals line the outer rim of our hope and scattered on the floor is torn up hate flags. We push the fight towards equality and love. I love you all and even without names, I feel your presence always. Thank you...

What I see, What I hear. Could you be alive?" -Invisible Frames

My alarm was blaring as I picked my head off the floor. As I stared blankly at the ceiling, the smell of wasted booze on the floor filled my nose. As I slowly picked myself up and went to take a shower, I asked myself how, just how things could get this bad. It’s been a few years out of the ward and being resigned back to detective in my field, was I ready for this. My comrades, as I paused, I doubt I can call them that again; they’ll look at me differently. They will talk about me, I know it. It’s so preschool, I am just trying to do my job or, so I thought.

Today as it may be, has it really been 5 years since our daughter died? My wife passed away a week later from that... as I started to cry in the shower, I punched my wall as I tried to confidently remember what the doctors told me. I miss her so much but, I got to get ready for work. Busy day today. As I crawled into my uniform and tucked a picture of my family into a tiny pocket in my chest pocket. As I headed out the door, I asked how things could get so bad again. Should’ve stayed home. I looked down the hall hoping to hear a voice that would calmly give me an answer. We knew I screwed up; all I did was nothing to protect her. As I headed down the hall, the smell of booze and cigarettes filled the area.

It had reminded me of the dirty cases I’ve been assigned to, and all the scum I put behind bars, but now I debate if I was ever better than them. I promised her countless times I would retire and pull from the force. That thought hasn’t escaped me yet.

As I sighed and left the building, got into my car, and I let out one final scream out. This drive to the station wasn’t as far as I remembered. I just had to clear my head for work, I told myself. Cortina, I will see you again, and our daughter Iris. I swear, I will make things right. As I parked my car in the station, I couldn’t help but sob a little more. As I cleared my eyes, a bang on my car window jolted me awake.

To my surprise it was Chuck, as he walked off laughing, what a jerk, that guy. As I got out of my car and headed inside, it was just as I left it. The filing cabinets were an old gray, the faint smell of smoke and cigars filled the air. There were some new people I didn’t recognize but everyone stared at me from corners, and I knew they were judging me. Like a sudden dread of silence shifted around me. My steps became weightless under their stares, I guess I can’t blame them. It was my fault after all, for that incident, but now isn’t the time to remember. As I placed my stuff on my desk, the captain shouted at me into his office. Captain Charles was built like a tank but ironically, had an easy temper and was always remaining calm somehow; Shocking really.

Today however he had an awful temper, he told me to sit. What did I do this time, I thought? In a hasty voice he said begrudgingly, First things first, I’m going to be honest. I’m glad you're back. I’ve assigned you to a case with our newest homicide detective. Hank is a good cop; I trust that you two will work fine. Am I right? With a halfcocked smirk, all I could do was respond with a smile,  and said, Sure. His last remarks were that the rest of the cadets needed some time, so they are maybe a little grumpy. To say the least, they trashed my desk.

As I cleaned up my desk, Hank, my assigned partner came over to me and said, Good morning. As I tilted my eyes towards his direction I responded, Good morning. So, what’s our case? He simply gestured over a file to me, and the case title was, Lone Scamper. I chuckled a little and it was a simple murder case. A guy mid 20’s murdered a bunch of people in various clubs and bars. Finally caught. Simple. I asked Hank simply, What happened to him? Why the big deal? Hank nervously avoided the topic and said, Let’s go. We’re going to be late. As I followed him to one of the cop cars in the parking lot Hank merrily sighed and said, It’s a very serious case. Remember the chessmen case, turns out they have connections. This man is wanted by them, and we must escort him out of this country. In, my head, this isn’t good at all. The chessmen were an organization of various gangs pulled together.

They have gotten so strong we simply were powerless without the aid of the FBI and CIA. So, we had to assist the FBI, cause the CIA didn’t deem it a high enough threat to national security.

This crazy half assed goal was to infiltrate and deconstruct it from the inside. Honestly something that would work in a movie or book, but this was suicide. We had lost a lot of good men throughout the operation which lasted longer than expected. No shit I thought to myself.

Paranoia and fear drove some to the extreme. Some simply retired like that one cop who left to go to some quiet small village with a killer on the loose. Some folks thought they could handle it alone and ended up in body bags.  However, there were talks of a father and son cleaning up the mess out of vengeance. More like urban legend really, I laughed to myself, who are they trying to impress. To my knowledge at least, they're dead. From the internal reports it ended in a massive explosion, in the docks in the outer banks district. These Chessmen were not a gang  to be crossed, they may be weakened but their power is still present. Their like cockroaches, they never know when
