The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden hue over the peaceful meadow. Lily’s heart swelled with appreciation as she held her phone up and began her livestream, ready to show off to her millions of followers.
Hey guys! I'm out here in the most magical spot I've ever seen! Honestly, it's like a dream,
she gushed, panning her camera across the vibrant wildflowers and towering trees that framed her idyllic location. Isn't this place just stunning? It's so serene and beautiful... Oh, and speaking of beauty, I have to tell you all about this new skincare line I've been using.
Lily held up a bottle of skincare she’d been sent as PR, expertly weaving in her latest brand endorsement, her voice lilting with enthusiasm. She knew how important authenticity was to her followers, so she only endorsed products she truly believed in.
As she continued to chat, she noticed the viewer count steadily rising, accompanied by a flurry of heart emojis and comments.
You look amazing, girl!
Please keep doing what you’re doing… it’s SO important.
We love you!!!
She smiled as she read their messages, feeling genuinely connected to this online community that had become an integral part of her life.
Suddenly, the distant sound of rustling bushes pierced through the tranquil atmosphere. Lily froze for a moment, her eyes darting towards the source of the noise. A wave of unease washed over her, but she quickly dismissed it, laughing light-heartedly.
Oh my god, you guys, what if there's a bear out here? That would be so crazy, right?
The screen erupted with more comments – some expressing concern, others sharing in the joke.
However, as the rustling grew louder, Lily's playful façade began to crumble. Her eyes widened in fear, and she could feel her heart pounding against her chest.
Um, seriously though, guys, I'm starting to get a little freaked out. I'm not even kidding right now.
Her voice trembled as she continued to scan the perimeter of the meadow, her grip on her phone tightening. The rustling intensified, and with each passing second, so did the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She tried to maintain her composure for the sake of her viewers, but the terror was plain in her eyes.
Guys, please, I need help,
Lily whispered, her heart pounding relentlessly in her chest. The rustling grew closer, accompanied by the crunch of footsteps on fallen leaves. She tried to swallow the lump in her throat, but it felt as if she were choking on her own fear. Who's there?
she called out hesitantly, hoping against hope that it was just someone playing a prank. But deep down, she knew that this wasn't a joke anymore.
This was real.
Who’s there?
she demanded, her voice cracking with terror. She scanned the bushes, struggling to make sense of the shadows that seemed to shift and dance before her eyes.
Her breath hitched as a figure emerged from the underbrush – a man she didn't recognize, his face hidden beneath the brim of a worn baseball cap.
Hey, what do you want?
Lily squeaked, instinctively taking a step back. Her legs trembled like jelly beneath her, threatening to give out at any moment.
The man stepped out, and in the dim light, Lily could make out the bottom half of his face. It was covered in something… green paint?
Lily’s stomach dropped. But before she had a chance to process it—the man lunged forward without warning, his hands reaching for her throat.
Lily's scream cut through the serene silence of the meadow like a knife. She flailed her arms desperately, trying to fend off her attacker, but he was too strong. Her phone slipped from her grasp, still live streaming as it clattered to the ground. Help! Someone, please help me!
she cried out, her voice strained and hoarse beneath his mammoth-like grip.
The man's grip tightened around her throat, but Lily continued to fight back with an unexpected ferocity. She squirmed and kicked, her small frame writhing like a wildcat in his grasp.
The once picturesque, serene landscape now took on a sinister air as the phone lay on its side, still live-streaming to Lily's thousands of horrified followers. She desperately wished she could get them to help her, to send someone to where she was, but they had no way of knowing, and in that moment, Lily knew it was over.
Help... please...
came a faint whisper from Lily, her voice barely audible as it was carried away by the wind.
Her heart pounded in her chest as she tried to focus on regaining some semblance of strength, but her body betrayed her, leaving her feeling weak and helpless.
The man's grip tightened. And as her vision turned to black, she knew he had won.
CHAPTER ONE
The sun had barely climbed above the horizon, casting a golden sheen over the sprawling city as Jade Savage maneuvered her black car through the quiet streets on the outskirts of Los Angeles. The light caught the dangling rearview mirror ornament – a miniature pair of gymnastic rings that swayed with every turn.
They were a silent tribute to Amber, her sister, whose life had been a series of complex routines, both in the gym and out.
Gripping the steering wheel tightly, Jade's knuckles whitened, mirroring the tension knotting her stomach. Her gaze flickered to the passenger seat where an envelope lay, its contents screaming silently from the page. Your sister’s death wasn’t an accident.
The words echoed in her mind, reverberating against the walls of a decade-old wound that never quite healed.
Amber,
she whispered, letting the name hang in the air, a prayer or perhaps a curse.
Jade had received the letter while cocooned in the sterile confines of a hospital room, recovering from an injury sustained during her stint with the FBI. It was supposed to be a one-off job, aiding in the capture of a celebrity killer, but it had left her with more than just physical scars. The case was closed, the threat nullified. Yet the experience working with them had stirred something in her.
The memory of her sister's smiling face – so full of life and promise – flashed before her eyes. Amber had been destined for Olympic glory, her body bending and soaring in ways that defied gravity until it all came crashing down. An overdose... that was what had killed Jade's younger sister.
The morning was just beginning to shed its softer hues for the harsh light of a full-on Los Angeles day. Jade's car wove through the outskirts, the cityscape giving way to more desolate stretches where the wild and the urban met in an uneasy truce. The sun glinted off the hood of her car, casting fleeting shadows that danced like specters over the dashboard.
Amber's image flickered in Jade's mind—a ghostly replay of a life snuffed out too soon. Every time she passed a familiar landmark, the memories surged stronger, relentless waves crashing against the shores of her will. She couldn't help but revisit that dreadful day, the moment frozen in time when she had found Amber lifeless in her room. Her sister's body lay on the bed they used to jump on as children, now a cold altar of finality.
Ten years. Why does it feel like yesterday?
She recalled the maelstrom of grief that followed—the piercing cries of their mother, the silent devastation of their father. The police had said it was an overdose, and everyone knew Amber's battles with addiction. But sober? That's what her friends had claimed. Amber had been clean, aiming for a comeback, her eyes once again sparkling with dreams instead of dulled by chemicals.
Then, just the other day, when Jade was still in the hospital after her work with the FBI was done, she received an anonymous letter.
Your sister's death wasn't an accident.
It was just like Dane, her mentor, had said.
The doubts that had haunted Jade—initially faint wisps of suspicion—had solidified into an unyielding block of ice in her chest after the letter arrived. If not for Dane's persistent skepticism, she might have let herself succumb to the accepted narrative of Amber's demise. But Dane always saw through the fog of half-truths.
Never did sit right with me, kiddo,
he had grumbled one evening over beers, his brown eyes dark with unspoken thoughts. Not one damn bit.
Jade could almost hear his gravelly voice now, echoing through the confines of the car as though he were sitting shotgun. It was this memory—this conviction—that gnawed at her resolve, urging her to peel back layers buried under a decade's worth of dust.
Your gut's telling you something,
Dane would say, you best listen.
Damn it, Bear,
Jade muttered, her fingers tightening around the steering wheel, knuckles blanching. You better be home.
The morning sun bathed the world in golden light, but as Jade turned onto the familiar street leading to Dane's house, shadows seemed to gather at the edges of her vision, a stark reminder of the doubts that plagued her. The road was a timeline of their shared history, each landmark whispering tales of past cases cracked wide open under their collective scrutiny. Her mentor's home, nestled amongst towering oaks, stood stoic and unchanging—a stark contrast to the tumult churning within her.
As she guided the SUV up the long driveway, gravel crunching beneath the tires, Jade felt the weight of Amber's memory pressing down on her. She could almost see them, younger versions of themselves, huddled over case files at Dane's kitchen table, laughter punctuating the air like bright pops of gunfire. It was here, in this sanctuary of camaraderie and wisdom, that Jade had learned to channel her former gymnast's grace into the art of security.
Pulling the vehicle to a stop with practiced ease, Jade sat motionless, breathing deeply to quell the rising tide of emotions. The letter in her bag throbbed with significance, its presence an invisible force urging her forward. She reached for it, fingers brushing over the textured paper as if it were a talisman capable of exorcising the ghosts of doubt.
With the missive clutched in her grip, Jade exited the car, boots connecting with the earth in a decisive rhythm. The morning's brightness cast elongated shadows across the porch, a chiaroscuro that played tricks on the eye. Each step toward Dane's front door felt like traversing the fine line between past and present, every inch closer to revealing a truth that had eluded her for far too long.
She paused at the threshold, heart pounding a staccato against her ribcage. This was more than a mere visit; it was the opening salvo in a battle for clarity, for justice. Jade raised her hand, knuckles rapping sharply against the wood, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the silence.
Deep breaths, she reminded herself, closing her eyes for a moment. Whatever comes next, you're ready.
The door swung open, and there stood Dane Bear
Sullivan, his silhouette momentarily outlined by the backlight of the hallway like a fortification against the unknown. The sight of him—shaved head gleaming under the indoor light, those brown eyes that had seen too much—was a sudden anchor in the whirlwind of Jade's racing thoughts. As a retired FBI agent, Dane had been close with Jade's father, but he had served as sort of a second father figure to both Jade and Amber. These days, Jade saw Dane more than she saw her own dad.
Jade?
Surprise etched deep lines into Dane's weathered face, his voice gravelly with disuse from the early hour. "What
