About this ebook
The Birth of a New Consciousness and the Cycles of Time
The book deals with the development of human consciousness and the God-image through human history. We are at the threshold of a transitional period from the Age of Fishes (Pisces) to the Water-Bearer (Aquarius) Age. What is the role of humans in this New Age? What should we expect from this coming New Era? What are its symbols? What is the fate of human spirituality? What will be the new concepts of God and of religion? What will the new the God-image be? What will the role of organized religions be? When does the Water-Carrier Age start?
This book attempts to answer these questions based on well researched sources complemented and endorsed by cosmology, archeology, depth psychology, religion, Near East studies, and mythology, among other scientific disciplines. The book also intends to clarify the epistemological terminology of the concepts “constellations” and “zodiacal ages” as well as the confusion created by some fundamentalist Protestant religious leaders and sensationalistic New Age writers, who have misinterpreted the signs of the transitional period as the end of the world. The truth is that there is no such thing as the end of the world, but the end of one world, the end of the Fishes’ Era, and the commencing of a new chapter in human history called the Water-Carrier (Aquarian) dispensation.
A correct comprehension of the shift of cosmic ages is extremely important for humankind. This book empowers humans to be prepared to confront the psychological upheavals that entail the shift of ages; it gives the reader an accurate perspective regarding the planetary transformations that are currently taking place, and offers hope and inspiration as we approach the Golden Age of Water-Bearer.

FOREWORD
Fundamental changes in collective spiritual evolution are periodic and cyclic in the history of the universe. All of life is evolving, as we are evolving, in cycles of completion and renewal. This absolute realty shapes all and unifies all, as all seemingly fragmented parts come together like interlocking pieces of one gigantic, cosmic puzzle.
Madame Helena P. Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, described an unknowable, unfathomable, and mysterious ultimate reality behind all of life. This absolute reality permeates and inhabits all of creation from rocks to trees and animals in a way that makes all of life interdependent and interrelated. We are all made of the same star stuff and energized from the same source. From it, all nature proceeds. Into it, all life returns at the end of all great life cycles.
Moreover, Blavatsky’s ancient insights gathered in the mystical Himalayas, describes how spirit, (cosmic consciousness manifested in the form of nature all around us in the physical world) teaches us about the necessary cycles of life as it unfolds. Spirit in its purest form is timeless, as we think in terms of time, but evolves in cycles through stages of creation. Her little book The Voice of the Silence examines what nature can teach us about the cycles of life, as change takes just as long as it requires evolving through the ages. We see this in the evolving seasons and the cycles of life in the fauna and flora that transcend from one stage of life to another, fed by the spirit (consciousness) in nature. And she advises us to assist nature, as she assists us.
Dr. Albert Amao in this new book advances the theory that our civilization is in the process of making a fundamental shift in consciousness with the coming of the Water-Carrier Age. He uses the term cosmosociology to distinguish from the general misconception that links the name of the constellations with the name of astrological ages. He defines cosmosociology as the sociological discipline concerned with the study of the evolution of human consciousness based on the cosmic cycles expressed in the zodiacal signs.
This innovative concept is based on the premise that there is a meaningful coincidence between the zodiacal signs and the mass consciousness.
The golden age of the Water-Carrier has been forecast for thousands of years in the ancient mystery tradition as a natural progression of primal forces that project human development through earth cycles. Just as we experience a wheel of the year in the mundane world of nature, experiencing major seasonal changes and the forces behind them, we experience cosmic progression around a much larger wheel of life that ushers in a new earth age. This is in accordance with the esoteric principle of as above, so below.
Each new age ushers in the energy of the next earth cycle in progression. We have looked to the heavens for a blueprint written in the constellations since the beginning of human civilization. We will experience the new energy of a world that renews itself and transforms itself on a primal level periodically. And the new energy will last for 2,160 or so years. Welcome to the golden age of the Water Carrier. Regardless of when you were born, you will experience the magical forces behind this air sign depicted by a water carrier, as its energy sweeps across our world, affecting all human consciousness.
In his well-researched new book, Dr. Amao advances the theory that the universe was created and exists through consciousness or infinite mind. He sees this universal consciousness behind all of creation. He examines different timetables to determine when the Age of the Water Carrier will begin to trigger monumental changes in consciousness. He cautions religious zealots who foresee some sort of end of the world that the shift from the Age of Fishes to the new age of the Water Carrier is simply a patterned, predictable shift in the cycles of time and part of the grand design of evolution. He foresees many social, political and religious changes and urges everyone to become ready for the shift in consciousness that must be made. In the coming new age, he relates, we must be ready to meet the divine on a direct and personal level.
Significantly, human consciousness and our thought forms are electromagnetic energy dispatched in wave motion. Blavatsky viewed the spirit aspect of the absolute reality as consciousness, the primal intelligence behind all of creation and spiritual evolution. This underlying consciousness is the guiding intelligence behind cosmic evolution and the source of all individual consciousness
This universal life force that runs through all of creation is a primal force most obvious on a mundane level in the cycles of nature, but present in all creation. It is the propelling life force behind everything.
Life is about change and transformation. The light that descends lovingly from the heavens above today energizes us and ignites new life. The energy that falls lovingly upon us tomorrow will be slightly different. Like a prism that bends light into various colors with different qualities, the primal energy that drives all of creation changes in a pattern of mysterious hues and varying properties. We are facing such a major change, as the energy of Fishes Age (Pisces) gives way to the energy of Water-Bearer (Aquarius).
The changes will not happen all at once but gradual; it will not be as dramatic as light suddenly flooding a dark room. But little by little, darkness will give way to the coming dawn. And so we undergo this sometimes awkward period of transition. Dr. Amao’s brilliant, new book guides us through this awkward period of adjustment into the golden age that awaits us.

INTRODUCTION
Currently we are witnessing the unveiling of a new reality. Our civilization is in the process of making a fundamental shift in consciousness. The deterministic theories of the past are being rendered obsolete by the advance of scientific knowledge, revealing that humans are the only responsible agents of their own destiny. The theories of relativity and quantum physics have offered new insights into the nature of reality. New biological concepts such as epigenetics and neuroplasticity (brain plasticity) conclusively prove the power of our thoughts over our bodies. Depth psychology and transpersonal psychology have revealed the extent of human potential. They have also demonstrated that the personal psyche is connected to the World Soul or anima mundi. In short, our understanding of the nature of reality has been dramatically shifted toward a new consciousness — a cosmic consciousness.
The principle that animates and pervades the whole world is what may be called the universal life power. It is the engine of human development. It is the force that impels human spiritual growth to advance toward undreamed-of horizons. It is at the core of human evolution. Indeed it could be said that the only reality in the universe is consciousness — the living mind — expressed in the physical realm as this universal or intelligent life power. In the Hebrew tradition, it is known as ruach Elohim, the spirit of God; in the Hindu tradition, it is called prana. H.P. Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, and her trans-Himalayan Mahatmas called it Fohat. In Greek, it is known as pneuma; in Latin, as spiritus; and in English it is called spirit. (The Greek pneuma hagia is rendered in English versions of the New Testament as Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit). The German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel called it the Absolute Idea. These are merely different names for the same principle of life that possesses reason, will, and conscience,
as one Jewish website puts it.¹ The life power is not a blind mechanical energy but an intelligent and purposeful agent. It has created unicellular life forms such as bacteria and protozoa, which have evolved into complex multicellular organisms, including human beings — and it continues to develop toward unforeseen horizons. I will elaborate on this concept in the pages ahead.
Over the course of history, people have conceptualized this power through symbolic images or God-images: dynamic entities that develop along with the evolution of planetary consciousness. These entities have been expressed through myths, religious motifs, and philosophies.
Many sociologists, philosophers, psychologists, and mystics agree that the history of humankind is the account of the evolution of consciousness. Ever since the great Greek philosopher Plato articulated the concept of the cosmic age commonly known as the Platonic year, there has been much speculation about this subject. Religious historians, astronomers, astrologers, philosophers, and other scholars have written about it, as we will see. But there has never been a clear conception about the cosmic ages, their lengths in time (i.e., their starting and ending points), or their individual characteristics, etc. In addition, to my contribution to this subject, this book attempts to summarize the best contributions of the scholars who have written on this subject.
In this book, I will use the term cosmosociology to distinguish from the general misconception that links the name of the constellations with the astrological ages. I understand cosmosociology to be the sociological discipline concerned with the study of the evolution of human consciousness based on the cosmic cycles expressed in the zodiacal glyphs. The fundamental premise is that there is a meaningful coincidence between the zodiacal glyphs and mass consciousness. Similarly, there seems to be a resonance between the cosmic rhythms of an age and social groups at large. The word cosmosociology can also be understood as world astrology applied to the evolution of collective consciousness through the zodiacal ages.
Hence I posit the theory that the development of consciousness parallels the change of zodiacal ages. Viewing the matter from a slightly different angle, one can explain the transformations of consciousness and of the God-image of the predominant religions of the world according to the changing of the zodiacal ages. The principle of causality states that everything organic or inorganic extant in this universe is subject to a cyclical law of birth, growth, and decay. Thus, the notion of the cosmosociology is based on that cyclical law, with its parameter being the Precession of the Equinoxes. A civilization rises from the ashes of an older civilization to be superseded in time by another, higher civilization.
This is my primary hypothesis: the evolution of consciousness is expressed in the psychological development of religious ideas according to the predominant symbol of the zodiacal age of each era. Moreover, the symbolism of the prevalent zodiacal age is manifested in religious and sociocultural ideas in the leading civilizations of the world. In other words, one can explain the transformations of the God-images of the major religions by the changing of the zodiacal ages. The theory of synchronicity developed by the psychiatrist C.G. Jung provides a solid metaphysical basis for delving into the sequence of development of consciousness through these ages. This work is a socioreligious interpretation of the Jungian concept of synchronicity applied to cosmosociology and the cycles of time.
The ideas expressed in this book are backed up by authorities in physics, depth psychology, ancient history, sociology, metaphysics, archeology, archetypical astrology, comparative mythology, and religion. As frequently as possible I will quote scholars who are eminent in their fields in order to substantiate my ideas. Jung; Blavatsky; Isaac Newton; Dr. Giorgio de Santillana, professor of the history of science at MIT; Dr. Hertha von Dechend, professor of the history of science at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt; and Dr. Paul Foster Case, founder of the Qabalistic organization Builders of the Adytum, are among those who have devoted special attention to the precession of the equinoxes and the cosmic ages. I am standing on the shoulders of giants.
Another central thesis of this book is that humankind is stepping into a transitional period from the Age of the Fishes (Pisces) to the Age of the Water-Carrier (Aquarius). We are fortunate to be witnessing one of the greatest sociopolitical and religious transformations that planet earth has ever undergone. It is vital for modern man to understand this fact so that he can be mentally and spiritually prepared to confront the upheavals entailed by these changes of cosmic dimensions. This is the time for the realization and application of the ancient axiom Man, know thyself.
Indeed the fundamental purpose of this new dispensation is to change the paradigm from one of the relationship between a far-distant God somewhere in the heavens to one of an indwelling God principle. The era of organized religion as an intermediary between God and man — and as a means of social control — is coming to an end. Instead we will be witnessing the direct spiritual connection of each individual with his or her Divine Self.
This book attempts to provide a clear perspective on the universal changes that have been taking place since the world entered the new millennium. The social and psychological crisis that modern man is confronting is due to the lack of a central myth that can provide meaning and purpose at both the individual and the collective levels. The myth of the Age of the Fishes — in the Western world, the Judeo-Christian religion — has lost power and influence as a source of spiritual inspiration. Thus it is extremely important to redefine the concepts of God, man, and the universe on the basis of the breakthroughs made in many scientific disciplines.
The radical changes occurring as we enter into a new dispensation (a distinct period in history marked by one of the twelve zodiacal signs) have been taken by some Protestant religious leaders, as well as by some New Age writers, as signs of the end of the world. Something similar happened with the end of the Long Count of the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012, which received a great deal of attention before it occurred. Although this date represented the closing of an epoch and the beginning of a new chapter in history, some sensationalistic New Age writers insisted that it too portended the annihilation of the world.
It has been proved that the mind has the power to create whatever it believes and conceives of. As a result, these unfounded predictions have wider consequences than is sometimes imagined. Susceptible and uninformed people believe they are true. They are then inspired to subconsciously create unfavorable situations in their lives that have ripple effects on their families and on society in general. And a group mind is an even more powerful device for materializing ideas. Thus predictions of disaster create, at the very least, a pessimistic and depressing environment in mass consciousness, and at worst may lead to negative consequences in the world.
By contrast, this book attempts to demonstrate that the present challenging situation of the world is part of a natural cycle in human history. Political, socioeconomic, and religious upheavals are necessary adjustments for the entrance into a new worldwide order of social and economic justice, which will be based on a higher level of international understanding and knowledge. Consequently, as I will argue, the present world crisis is a series of signs that we are entering into a transitional period: the ending of the Age of the Fishes and the slow dawning of the Water-Carrier Age.
Although there is wide agreement that humankind is approaching this New Age, there is no agreement about the date of its commencement. Some authors say that the Age of Aquarius started in the year 2000; others, including the occult lodges known as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and the Builders of the Adytum, believe this era began in 1781, when the planet Uranus was discovered. Jung suggested that the Aquarian Age would begin either in 1997 or 2154. Other writers have posited different starting dates. Esoteric writer Edward Carpenter proposed 1936. Serge Raynaud de la Ferrière, founder of the Great Universal Brotherhood, advanced March 21, 1948. French astrologer Paul Le Cour asserted that the Age of the Water-Carrier would start in 2160.² The American sleeping prophet, Edgar Cayce, predicted the beginning of the New Age would take place in 1998, and Mme. Blavatsky, 2156. In short, the dates suggested range from 1781 to 2060. Which one is correct? Determining that is one of the goals of this book.
The fundamental concept in establishing the dawning of the Water-Carrier Age is the precession of the equinoxes. The language of the zodiacal signs and the planetary system provides the dates of past cosmic events with accuracy, as they are not subject to human manipulation. Past astronomical configurations can be traced with great exactitude through modern computational calculations.
There is confusion between the concepts of constellations and zodiacal ages that needs to be clarified once and for all. The misunderstanding of these terms has aroused much controversy among astrologers and academics. This mistake is due to the fact that the zodiacal signs were named after the constellations.³ But as will be explained later, a constellation is not the same thing as a zodiacal sign. A correct understanding of these dissimilarities will give a proper appreciation of the zodiacal ages. In order to determine the beginning of the Water-Carrier Age, I will consult complementary resources such as the Gregorian, Hebrew, and Mayan calendars as well as the Inca cosmology. I find that all of these have their own significance.
Some readers will embrace the notion of the Water-Carrier dispensation with sympathy and enthusiasm; others will regard it with skepticism and scorn. Understandably, because too much nonsense has been written on these matters by charlatans and deceivers who have discredited these disciplines and relegated them to the level of fallacy or New Age hocus-pocus. Therefore a healthy skepticism about these issues is always appropriate. At the same time skeptical readers are asked to suspend their judgment about the ideas presented here until they have read and properly understood them.
Theories in any scientific field are provisional: they are valid only until other ones supplant them. Many theories that were once considered as solid and sacrosanct scientific knowledge have now been dismissed as mere fallacies of the past. Furthermore, as the philosopher of science Thomas S. Kuhn observed in his book The Structure of Scientific Revolution, the development of science is never homogeneous or linear. Rather it is a constant shift of paradigms, that is, a series of scientific revolutions, that change the conventional wisdom of the time. According to Kuhn, scientific theory does not evolve from the straightforward accumulation of facts, but from the discovery of irregularities and inconsistencies in current theories. This leads to the formulation of new theories.⁴ The geocentric theory, for example, was regarded as absolutely true by both the Catholic Church and the scientific establishment until the scientific revolution begun by Nicolaus Copernicus in the sixteenth century. Similarly, some theories that now are considered firmly scientific will in the future be viewed as mere stepping-stones to higher knowledge.
Two other concepts need to be clarified: esoteric and occult. Often misunderstood, they have been associated with black magic, sorcery, and similar practices. But I use these terms as referring to hidden knowledge or something that transcends ordinary understanding. As modern dictionaries define these terms, they are also associated with a body of religious traditions and practices preserved and performed outside of organized religions. The word occult is derived from the Latin occultus, meaning hidden.
Esoteric is derived from Greek roots meaning further in.
Authentic esoteric organizations use these words to denote something that is hidden
or beyond the comprehension of the untrained mind. Consequently, they refer to a hidden tradition, a metaphysical and cosmological theosophy — a way of comprehending reality through metaphors and symbols. Just because many people are not trained to understand subtle metaphysical principles does not mean that these should be associated with negative practices. After all, the same argument could be made about physics, calculus, or other forms of highly technological knowledge.
This book’s purposes are:
1. To clarify and differentiate between the concepts of cosmic cycles based on the constellations and those based on the zodiacal ages.
2. To describe the parallels between the precession of the equinoxes and sociological, religious, and cultural changes in human history.
3. To set an approximate date for the ending of the Age of the Fishes and the beginning of the Water-Carrier Age.
4. To define the transitional period from the Age of the Fishes to the Water-Carrier Age.
5. To delineate the sociological and religious characteristics of the Age of Fishes and Water-Bearer Era.
6. To outline the unfolding of a new God-image — the Water-Carrier archetype — in the coming age.
My inspiration for writing on this subject is a desire to understand the collective tendencies of mass consciousness that play such a powerful role in shaping human destiny and history. This book addresses the crisis of an emerging new reality
