    FADE IN:

    EXT. DESERT—DAY

An Arab caravan is caught in the middle of a desert sandstorm. Cloth across their faces for protection, MEN are busy trying to protect their camels and merchandise. Animals are frightened. Ghostly sounds of the WIND drown the CRIES of men and camels.

    EXT. DESERT—AFTERNOON

The caravan is setting camp. Arab men are assessing damages after the storm. A few nomadic tents are visible against the setting sun. IDRIS, the camel boy, makes his way to the dunes to relieve himself. As he lifts his once white garments, he notices a piece of red fabric protruding from under the sand.

    IDRIS

    Hey! I found something!

A dozen men abandon their tasks and run toward him, knives in hand. They probe with their feet. HASSAN IBN MUSEYR, the caravan leader, motions them to step back.

    HASSAN

Hamid! Ali! See what we have here.

    OPHIR

Careful! This place is ruled by demons.

    HAMID

    Maybe it's a trap.

Hamid and Ali dig in the sand. The rest of the men stand watching, knives handy, making signs against evil. The shape of a short, stocky MAN emerges from the sand.

    HASSAN

    Is he alive?

Hamid bends over the unconscious man, presses his ear to the hairy chest. He nods.

    ––––––––

    HASSAN (cont'd)

Search him! He may be armed.

Arabs search his pockets. They find a wallet, car keys, tiny pocket English-Arabic dictionary, a gun and a crumpled map.

    OPHIR

    An infidel!

He spits on the sand. He reaches for a heavy, golden chain on the unconscious man's chest.

    HASSAN

    Wait! Allah is merciful.

Even to the lowest who don't

see his light. Give him water.

Ophir, disappointed, brings his waterskin to the man's lips. Water trickles down the unshaved cheek. The man draws a rasping breath and starts coughing.

    OPHIR

He will bring nothing but trouble.

    HASSAN

You don't know that. Take him

    to the tent.

Arabs drag COUGHING and PROTESTING man toward the camp.

    EXT. DESERT CAMP—NIGHT

A huge moon hangs low over the horizon. Arab men sit around the fire. RANDY CONNOR, now recovered, chews on a handful of dates, spitting the seeds to the side.

    HASSAN

Insh Allah. He decided to let you live.

    You should be grateful.

    RANDY

    Grateful?! Are you kidding?

My camel, supplies, everything I had, gone!

    I've lost everything!

    HASSAN

    You still have your life.

    RANDY

What kind of life is that?

    I can't even go back if I

    don't....

    OPHIR

What have you been doing in the

middle of the desert, all by yourself?

    RANDY

    I...am an...archeologist,

    looking for ancient ruins,

    lost cities, civilizations,

    that kind of thing....

    OPHIR

Really? And what did you carry this for?

He pulls Randy's gun from under his robe. Randy's hands fly toward the gun. Arabs pull out their knives. Randy looks around and thinks better of it.

    HASSAN

I think you are not telling us the truth.

The only thing you can find here is....

    IDRIS

    A gate of Ganzir...?!

    HASSAN

Hush, my son. Don't speak this name.

    OPHIR

You will bring bad luck on all of us.

    Demons have big ears.

Randy's eyes light up with interest.

    RANDY

    Gate of Ganzir? What's that?

    HASSAN

We don't play with dark forces.

    Tomorrow we'll reach Yassa.

You can go home from there.

    EXT. DESERT—DAY

Sea of dunes. Caravan is making its way through the desert.

    EXT. YASSA OASIS—DAWN

LAUGHTER, like silver bells, rings in the morning air. Waters of the pond are pink in the rays of a rising sun. Hassan's WIVES are taking a bath. NIYAZI, the eunuch, a huge, bold Arab with a machine gun, watches over them.

Randy, hidden in the bushes by the waterfall, high above the pond, drools over the Arab girls. Suddenly, a stone loosens from under his elbow and falls to the pond. The girls SCREAM.

Niyazi gives a shrill cry. He fishes a cellular phone from under his loose robe, dials and calls for reinforcements in a high-pitched staccato.

    EXT. THE CAMP—DAWN

In the nearby camp, Arab men answer their cellular phones. They abandon their tasks, grab their weapons, and run toward the pond, guns pointed, knives drawn.

    BACK TO THE POND SCENE

    RANDY

    Oh, shit!

Randy looks for a place to hide but there is none. His movements loosen rocks and sand under him and he falls to the pool with a SCREAM and a SPLASH.

    EXT. UNDERWATER—MORNING

Randy swims clumsily, fighting for breath. He breaks the surface. There are Arab men waiting for him there. Guns SHOOTING, shower of rocks. Randy goes under, surfaces again, choking. Hands and knives reach for him. Ophir hits him in the head with a rock.

    Randy sinks to the
