Prologue
Beware of the fire
Tamira, sitting on a stone, near the pyre, with a steaming cup in her hand, admired the splendid sunrise. Between two mountains, the fiery star with its flaming rings was already lighting up the valley. The second moon had not yet set, still parading lightly on the south side just above a waterfall, from where a flock of glittering red birds took flight in a musical croaking noise. A light mist still hung over the edge of the forest.
Lost in her thoughts, she did not pay attention to the cawing, nor the noise and even less to the conversations in the camp. She was so engrossed in the landscape that she did not notice that suddenly the commotion on the hill was increasing. There was the sound of the suits of armor making more and more commotion as people put them on.
The war horn sounded.
They’re coming!
Noxys shouted
Another dragon not far away replied. It’s Black Rock!
From every corner, screams could be heard ringing out as they shouted. To arms! To arms!
Noxys began to call out again. Tamira, what are you doing? Shake it off, it's time!
Tamira raised her head and threw the rest of her cup into the flames before leaping to her feet. A woman was stirring a large pot placed over the fire. When the horn sounded, she stopped suddenly, dropping the spoon and then beckoned Tamira with both hands to throw the cup she still had in her hand.
Tamira looked at the cup, visibly disappointed. She had to leave and gently tossed the cup to her as she said. Thank you. Too bad I didn't have time to finish, it was a real treat.
She was still smelling the cinnamon scent of fermented and cooked apple with a hint of hot pepper.
The older lady gave her a small smile as she grabbed the cup and replied. The future is not written yet. Maybe you'll get to drink a bucketfull later,
she added with a modest chuckle.
Surprised by the answer, Tamira inclined her head slightly while looking at Noxys questioningly.
She grabbed her shield that was hunkered down on the tent pole at her side then harnessed it to her arm while running toward Noxys.
Noxys stretched out her entire body, making it easier for her rider to hoist herself up to her neck. Tamira boarded the tip of Noxys's tail and continued to sprint along her back before jumping into position at the base of the dragon's neck. In a synchronized maneuver, Tamira drew her sword from its sheath and Noxys opened her wings.
Behind her, a voice called out, Tamira take this with you.
She turned to see Aile-d'or throwing a spear twice her size at her, its blade blood-red and its shaft opaque as coal. With her free hand and the shield harnessed to her arm, she grabbed the spear and shouted. Watch yourself.
Aile-d'or came to a screeching halt, then bowed to her before walking away and disappearing into the fray.
Tamira looked at the black spear. It looked oddly familiar.
More than a thousand Dragon Riders now faced the valley on the backs of their mounts surrounded by several other Drumans and their companions from different backgrounds.
Noxys turned her head toward Tamira. Since a vaporous smoke leaked from her nasal cavity, you could tell she was fired up. In a cavernous tone, she said to her. It is up to you to deliver the war cry with the spear of Black Rock in hand.
Then she continued in thought. Are you ready to take up the torch, my daughter?
Tamira smiled. You could feel the tension in the air. The horns had stopped and the drums began to sound in rhythm. The war chants of the opponent in the distance could now be heard coming closer. The adrenaline of battle could be felt on both sides.
Tamira responded with a tone that vibrated throughout the valley. May our story save lives. For future generations!
Noxys turned her head forward, shaking her scales and letting out a roar, one that Tamira had never heard before, with a strength and ferocity that would raise the hairs on her chest. Tamira looked to her right and then to her left to scan the horizon. The roars of other dragons could be heard as some threw balls of fire and others ice." A sulfurous fume was already beginning to fill the air and soon it would give way to the smell of burning flesh and screams of pain with a slightly salty and bitter aftertaste of blood in the mouth. All the dragons had now filled their lungs with flammable gas and frosty saliva ready to spew their fury and terror. Many of them, however, would not return from this confrontation unscathed. The die was cast.
Noxys started to flap her wings. After two jumps on her front legs, she felt that her rider was ready and lifted herself from the ground in the last leap. Tamira could finally make out the big black mass flapping its wings in their direction. Would she have to face it? Couldn't she just make peace?
She asked herself in a final hesitation.
Black Rock… A legendary dragon of the ancient wars! So no one else had managed to bring it down except the renowned Dragonlord Ducan. Few could guess how close to home this scene really was. Yes, the epics had remembered the exploits of Tamira’s parents in the past. Despite all this, no account had mentioned Shina's name. Her mother was a legend for having defeated the enemy and fought alongside
