Penny and Brian
Brian and the Storm
Brian was eight years old. He had a dog named Penny. Penny was older than Brian, but she weighed about the same as he did.
One day, when Brian came home from school, he was surprised to find his father at home. Brian’s father usually came home after he did. Usually, it was almost dark by the time his dad got home.
Brian’s father worked at the power plant. He worked with big machines called turbines that made electricity. Brian was pleased that his father helped to make the electricity that made everyone’s lights and the TV work.
When Brian asked his dad why he was home early, his dad told him that a storm was coming and they had to get ready for it. This storm was called a hurricane.
A hurricane is bigger than most storms,
his father said. They are very powerful, and they make a big mess.
There was a lot to do to get ready for the storm, Brian’s father told him. They had to cover the windows and clean
