Introduction
What happened along your life journey? Studies of the brain affirm the importance of our connectors and relationship with the world outside ourself. Our experiences serve as a basis for our own formation.
Martin Laird in his book, Into The Silent Land says there are two contemplative practices that are essential for Christian formation. One is stillness or contemplation, the other is watchfulness or awareness. These short vignettes share how I have experienced my world and processed my perceptions, internally and externally. In the end, they became the key to my spiritual formation. I hope that as you reflect on these brief topics, you will also intentionally engage a formational process and experience transformation as you journey through your life experiences and observations of your environment.

27050.pngA Memory
Memories at my point in life can bring peals of laughter or tears of painful reminders. Memory is valuable for us all. There is even an app to improve memory for older folks like me.
Today was full of activity, but some of the day lent itself to remembering. I recalled the first time it began to sink into my soul that God truly loved me. That memory is etched on my soul, and I recall the time and place that awareness filled my soul with the joy of knowing God loves me. It is amazing how that experience was so different from knowledge. I knew the verses, and I had heard the testimonies, but I had not embraced God’s love so freely given. Why? I am uncertain. Psychology, sociology, biology, and other disciplines have suggestions, but as much as they are pertinent and concepts cannot be discounted, the fact remains that I did not see God as loving unconditionally. Somehow, my heart had not connected with my head, even though I could recite, I know God loves me because the Bible told me so.
Embracing God’s love did not change any circumstances, but it changed me and the course of my life. Receiving unconditional love has a way of doing that. That memory—that moment that is worth more than a gold medal or any other award—is a treasure still freely given and received every day. I am loved, and it has made a difference. What a memory!
Mesmerizing
I sat with three spiritual directors around a crackling fire. At the end of our session, one person noted that the fire burning in the fireplace was mesmerizing.
Somehow, that word called for further reflection. I love campfires, especially when they provide the opportunity to share a backyard campfire with grandchildren. It is amazing that we can sit relaxed in silence and lost in thought, and at other times be caught up in animated conversation as the shadows created by the firelight flicker around us.
What is it about the fire in a fireplace that catches and holds our attention? The flicker reminds me of the tenuousness of life. I am compelled to hold my breath, hoping the fire will continue to burn. It may have to do with the dance and the variety of flames as they rise toward the chimney or images created by the flames and the sense of excitement
