INTRODUCTION
The ideas presented in this book started with my own challenges having been born a woman.
While I was learning about myself, I felt I didn’t understand other women.
I wanted to know what made a woman beautiful. Were they the same things that made her happy too?
Our culture tells us to be one way, but what about what our soul tells us?
I didn’t want to be a victim and blame men for everything gone wrong in my life. I didn’t want to feel bitter and identify with women who wanted to be like the men they despised either.
I wanted to be free to define my own role as a woman, stripped of cultural pressures and prejudices.
The more I started to understand the topic of femininity, words and information started flowing through me.
I began to feel like I belonged. I was gaining confidence and felt secure from within. I didn’t need material things to define me. I was powerful as a woman.
MY STORY
I was born in Ukraine, in the picturesque city of Ivano-Frankivsk. I had lots of friends and family surrounding me at all times. Life felt normal, until my family decided to move to the United States when I turned twelve.
We moved to live the American dream, although in the beginning it did not feel that way. Life was nothing like I dreamed of. Life was full of obstacles and hardships to overcome. There were many lessons to learn, and much to discover about my new culture.
After a while though, things improved, I found myself accepting my new life as an American teenager. I absorbed main-stream culture like a sponge. I wanted to fit in, but fitting in was never to be for me.
Like most American teenagers at the time, I preoccupied myself with the western approach to beauty, which meant obsessing about my weight, eating zero fat and using every beauty product out there. This approach only made me chubbier and more insecure. And needless to say, it made me unhappy.
I was picked on at school and would come home crying every day. My grades were top of the class, but my social life was close to zero. I still felt different and I was very sensitive.
At that point I turned inward and started to work on understanding why it was so hard for me to be friends with other girls. I also wanted to understand how beauty played into it all, as I was fascinated with anything associated with beauty.
That’s why in college, I was so drawn to psychology, even though I was mostly taking pre-med classes like chemistry and biology. I became more and more fascinated with the mind and majored in psychology and biology.
After college, I started to spend more time in Ukraine. My new job as a journalist brought me back to my homeland. I liked being in Ukraine, because I was constantly inspired by the beauty around me.
The beautiful energy flowed from the women. They had this aura of radiance and confidence about them. It wasn’t just outside beauty that was striking, it was something deeper. It was charisma and poise, and almost every woman seemed to possess it in her own unique way.
It made me wonder what was it that made every woman seem so beautiful in
