About this ebook

Czech it Out: Czech American Biography Sourcebook provides a wealth of information on a variety of sources relating to biographical information on notable Americans with Czech roots. Besides the national figures, also included are information sources on significant individuals at the state, regional, and local levels. Beyond that, we saw it fit to also incorporate ethnic information sources, which frequently contain a wealth of information on pioneer settlers and individuals active at the community level. Having in mind the interests of genealogists in individual families and their descendents, a listing has also been provided on family histories and genealogies.

Even though Czechs have been living in the US practically since colonial times, no composite biographical dictionary exists about the accomplished Czech Americans. Biographical information about them is scattered in a plethora of sources, which are difficult to find and some are not readily accessible. The present author, who, literally, devoted several decades of his life to the study of Czech-American history, has canvassed hundreds of sources at national and local levels to identify, not only notable individuals but also pioneer settlers who played a significant role in the growth and development of the US. This publication should fill a great void in literature until a comprehensive biographical compendium about Czech Americans has been written.

Miloslav Rechcigl Jr.

Míla Rechcigl, as he likes to be called, is a versatile person with many talents, a man of science and organization professionally, and Renaissance man by breadth of his knowledge and scholarly interests. Born in Czechoslovakia to a son of the youngest member of the Czechoslovak Parliament, he spent the War years under Nazi occupation and after the Communist’s coup d’état escaped to the West and immigrated to the US. He received training as biochemist at Cornell University and later served as a research biochemist at NIH. Following his additional training he became a science administrator, first at the DHEW and later at US Department of State and AID. Apart from his scientific and science administrative pursuits, he served as an editor of several scientific series and authored more than thirty books and handbooks. Beyond that, he is considered an authority on immigration history, on which subject he had written extensively. He was also one of the founders of the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences (SVU) and for many years served as its President.

    FOREWORD

Over the last decade, Míla Rechcígl has been one of the most prominent historians concentrating on the history of Czechs in America. Through his articles and books, he enhances our collective memory, focusing on the thousands of Czechs who came to America – from the very first moments of settlement until present times.

Writing about exceptional personalities and searching for unknown heroes became Rechcígl’s lifelong mission. Each new article and book he publishes brings an awakening – a new person who was covered with the dust of forgetfulness.

This particular book, which represents decades of tedious and meticulous work, is a unique comprehensive reference guide which provides information about a plethora of sources where one could find the biographical data on literally thousands of Czech Americans who played an important role in the development of the US. The publication fills an important void in literature since no Who’s Who or other biographical compendium relating to Americans with the Czech roots exist.

I highly recommend this book which helps us – Czechs and Americans – find ourselves in the mirror of time and make the relations between our two nations even stronger.

    Petr Gandalovič

Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United States

    PREFACE

Even though Czechs have been living in the US practically since the Colonial times, no composite biographical dictionary exists about the accomplished Czech Americans. Biographical information about them, in fact, is scattered in a plethora of sources which are difficult to find and some are not readily accessible.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that the individuals who immigrated to America prior to the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, have been, as a rule, listed as Austro-Hungarians, Austrians or even Germans, which makes their ethnic identification difficult. The present author, who, literally, devoted several decades of his life to the study of Czech-American history, has canvassed hundreds of a variety sources at national and local levels to identify, not only notable individuals but also pioneer settlers who played a significant role in the growth and development of the US. Although information relating to a number of contemporaries has been also included, the emphasis has been on the past, covering the period from the earliest time the Czechs immigrated to America up to about the midst of the 20th century.

This publication has initially been patterned after the Almanac of Famous People¹ which provides a wealth of information on a variety of sources relating to biographical information about notable Americans. As our work progressed we have decided to also include, besides the national figures, information sources on significant individuals at the state, regional and local levels. Beyond that, we saw it fit to also incorporate ethnic information sources, which frequently contain a wealth of information on pioneer settlers and on individuals active at the community level. Having in mind the interests of genealogists in individual families and their descendants, a listing has also been provided on family histories and genealogies.

The listing is essentially based on the published sources. The exception are several highly reputable online encyclopedias, such as The Canadian Encyclopedia, Jewish Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, The Handbook of Texas Online, Virtual American Biographies and the Jewish Virtual Library. Because of its general usage and the fact that it frequently contains valuable information, we also included selected individuals from the online Wikipedia – the Free Encyclopedia and the Notable Names Database (NNDB).

For easier orientation and usage, the publication has been organized by subject categories, based on the type of biographical sources used. The first section is comprised of independent biographies and autobiographies, written either as monographs or journal articles or book chapters. The second and the third sections cover biographies listed in major national and local biographical compendia, respectively. The fourth section deals with biographical information contained in the Czech or American ethnic publications. The fifth section encompasses biographical information on professionals found in various subject compendia, such as business, law, medicine, education, sciences, arts and letters, etc. The last section provides listing of family histories and genealogies, including monographic as well as journal articles.

A researcher interested in biographies of public figures and prominent personalities should first look through the first section containing single biographies. If the information is not there, it is very likely to be found in the second or the third section, listing major biographical compendia at the national and the state level. If you are seeking information on persons in professions, then go directly to the fifth section. Persons who can read Czech, as well as those who are seeking biographical information on individuals active in the Czech community or cultural life, should turn their attention to the fourth section. The listed genealogical sources in the last section have been usually published privately, by the genealogists themselves. Apart from genealogical libraries, many of them have been filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and are located in their library in Salt Lake City; the Library of Congress in Washington, DC also maintains a number of them.

The publication is intended for anyone searching for biographical information on Czech Americans, be it for a scholarly research or practical usage. In addition, it should be of great use to professional as well as amateur genealogists interested in particular families.
