Acknowledgements
Jack and I would like to thank Brian and Leah Foutz with Hazak Ministries for their guidance and assistance in both editing our manuscript and helping us secure our relationship with Trilogy Publishing.
In addition, we would like to thank a teammate, Carl Gough, for his assistance with details in sequencing events and scores.
We wrote Jack’s story to the best of our ability keeping in mind that these memories go back some fifty years or more.
Introduction
Jack and I were inspired to record his story with its many challenges as an Aggie football player in order to share with our grandchildren and others the essence of pursuing a goal and persevering until it is accomplished. It is our hearts’ desire for them to know the importance of including God in the decisions they make, as Jack’s account will include his relationship with Jesus Christ.
At a time when families are distanced by a constant bombardment of social media and fast-paced living, there seems to be little time to spend talking and sharing. Both Jack and I remember the wonderful times we spent with our parents and grandparents sitting on their porches talking and laughing because it was too hot to sit inside. There was no television in our grandparents’ homes for most of our younger years. Those times were spent listening to our parents and grandparents telling stories about events of the past.
We learned that each of our families was rich in history and filled with accounts of endurance, sacrifice, and sometimes suffering, as our families were immigrants and lived through two world wars and the Great Depression.
Jack and I are profoundly patriotic, and we have a deep and abiding love for this great nation, the United States of America. We are thankful to God who has greatly blessed this nation. We understand and respect the sacrifices our ancestors made as they served our country to ensure our liberty and freedom. We have been privileged to thrive as a result of those who have come before us. A quote by former President Ronald Reagan keeps us mindful of our personal responsibility to maintain this freedom and liberty handed to us, Our freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.
Growing up in this county where liberty and freedom abound, we inherently knew that we could become whatever we were willing to work to achieve. We knew our dreams would not be handed to us, but that we would be required to plan and sacrifice to reach our goals. Our parents encouraged us to go to college. They did what they could to help us financially. We were the first in our families to earn a college diploma. Those degrees required personal sacrifices, which we were willing to endure with the understanding that we would be rewarded by the doors that higher education would open for us.
We want our grandchildren and anyone else who reads Jack’s account to know that the same future awaits those who are willing to set goals and work to achieve them. We believe that if we hold fast to the foundation this great country was founded on… Judeo Christian values, God’s Holy Word, and our Constitution; that there are solutions to the many challenges our country is experiencing.
Prologue
Jack Leon Kovar was born on October 9, 1947 in Houston, Texas, to Ina B. Ida Casanova Kovar and Edward William Kovar. His mother came from Independence, Louisiana and his father was raised in Snook, Texas. He is the third of five children. He has two older brothers, Eddie and Gary; and two younger sisters, Shirley and Brenda (deceased).
His father, Eddie, was an entrepreneur who started several businesses, one of which was the production and sales of the first fiberglass car called the Venus. Jack owned one of these cars but recently sold it to the developer’s son, Patrick McLoad.
Jack grew up working in his father’s various shops including: a fiber glass shop that made boats and carousel horses; an auto body shop; and an auto mechanic shop. Jack and his siblings never lacked for having souped-up
cars to drive. Among others, Jack drove a two-tone green ’53 Chevrolet with black and white rolled and pleated vinyl seats.
Jack’s mom, Ina, was a most loving mother who was very outgoing and had a great sense of humor. Their home was filled with the laughter of five children and all of their friends. Everyone who entered their home was greeted with a most warm and loving presence and acceptance. In fact, a friend of Eddie’s, Jay Reeves, came home with him one day and became a member of the family from that day forward.
They were a kissing family. The first time I entered their home I was greeted with a big kiss on the lips from every one of them. I finally got used to the fact that I was going to get kissed, like it or not. I learned to pucker up and get ready for the barrage of kisses coming my way.
Jack
