Preface
We look up to the most successful players in tennis not only for their incredible technique and skill on court but because they seemingly have three fundamental characteristics. The ability to clear their mind, control their emotions and stay relaxed at critical moments in a match.
Players of all levels, professionals or amateurs, who aspire for the same will firstly have to accept and deal with losing - an essential part of the journey towards success. When Rupert asked me to write a preface, it seemed a bold decision to open up on what it means to lose and to explore how to overcome it. I have no doubt its content will prove useful to tennis players of all levels who need to accept and learn from their failures.
A fundamental step in this process is to understand that you are the ´owner´ of your mistakes and only you will be able to deal with its implications. This concept leads me to one of my favourite sayings. ´It is not a question of what happens to you, it is a question of what you do with it that counts´. Rather than being haunted by losses, you need to learn from them. If not, the psychological scars that losing can cause will reappear at the most inopportune moments.
Thank you for addressing this essential element of the game and sharing your personal experiences.
I have no doubt its content will prove useful to tennis players of all levels who need to accept and learn that losing is simply part of the journey towards winning.
´Only through personal growth on the inside will you achieve victory on the outside.´ Oscar Garzón (CEO Lidermap, Motivational Speaker, Mentor).
(Professional Tennis Player 1989-1992)
´Success depends on previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure´ (Confucius)

Some of you play for the exercise, some for the social pleasure of playing with friends or some for the thrill of competing – it could of course be a combination of all three. Although our motivations for playing may differ, the one common denominator is that ultimately when you
