INTRODUCTION

Great authors start out as dedicated readers. Ask around, you'll find countless bestsellers saying the best lessons on writing come from reading. Knowing what works and doesn’t, what you like or dislike, and what inspires or disgusts you in the works of others is proven to make one a better author.

Why, then, do some authors shy away from writing book reviews?

The purpose of this book is to help authors who don't usually write reviews. (Other readers may benefit as well.) Perhaps they don't know where to begin. Or maybe they think their opinions don't count. Some people worry their review will sound foolish because they were never instructed on book review writing. Or they worry about insulting fellow authors.

Let me tell you this: Your review matters.

Writers need book reviews. That’s how we are valued. It’s our commission. Even if you only leave a few words, it matters. It matters because authors work hard to get reviews. As an author, you should know that to be true. It matters because the number of reviews is currently a large consideration of the algorithm that decides which books are going to get more attention from the automated systems that are used to determine who floats and who sinks. Not the words in them, just the quantity.

Leaving book reviews for books in your genre gives you authority, or credit, especially among readers who share your opinion. It also encourages your fellow authors to read and review your work. Edgar Allen Poe has been frequently reviewed by other authors. Comparisons of his works and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s still goes on today.

Not everyone liked Poe's works. What if disliking a book is what stops you from reviewing it? Consider that it’s possible that what you don’t like will be the very thing that someone else is looking for in a book. (Perhaps you found it too sad, but someone else is looking for books that will give them a good cry.)

The number of reviews, including the bad ones, makes a difference. Why? Because a book with two hundred five-stars glowing reviews, and nothing ranked lower, makes people skeptical. There’s no book that every reader thinks is perfect. (Look at The Great Gatsby, Mrs. Dalloway, and the Harry Potter series for stars and reviews as evidence.) Therefore, even a negative review might turn out to be not so bad. Just keep it respectful.

Consider this marketing psychology: Four out of five dentists recommend this brand. Why does that sell better and appeal more than saying most dentists, all dentists, or even just dentists? Because people are skeptical. When the word most comes up, people question how many. With the word all, people doubt
