    FAQ

    What comprises your ranking system?

A fighter’s ranking is determined by a diverse set of criteria detailed below:

    - A fighter’s last 5 fights

    - A fighter’s recent activity over the last 4 years of competition (2008-2011)

    - The caliber of competition they are facing

    - Their method of victory of their fights (decisions, knockouts, submissions, etc.)

    - Overall skill level and progression of skills (declining or ascending)

    - Fight performance, regardless of final outcome

Will there be future editions of The MMA Prospectus?

It will all come down to whether there is an audience for the information I am providing. MMA is growing rapidly. There are more fighters signed to the UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator than ever before. It makes it quite difficult for fans to familiarize themselves with all of the new and upcoming talent. Hopefully, this book becomes a valuable resource amongst MMA fans that are struggling to keep up with the sport.

Where is so-and-so fighter? Why aren’t they featured?

Fighters that have not been active in the last 2 years of competition were not included. I would have loved to have featured a Legends section, but there was simply not enough time. Active fighters that were not profiled likely fell outside of the rankings criteria. Every fighter on the UFC roster as of December 31, 2011 was profiled, along with the top stars of Bellator and Strikeforce. Lastly, the top five free agents and prospects for each weight class were included, in addition to a notable fighters section.

    Where is the flyweight division?

The flyweight division did not hit mainstream mixed martial arts as of January 1, 2012. The Tachi Palace Fights promotion was the primary home for the top flyweights of the world in 2011. Many of the other top flyweights are competing in Brazil and Japan or as undersized bantamweights in larger promotions. The UFC will be introducing their flyweight division in 2012. Next year’s edition of this book will include the flyweight division.

Why is so-and-so fighter ranked in Division A when they are currently fighting in Division B?

All information in this book is accurate as of January 1, 2012. Therefore, New Year’s Eve (12/31/2011), at UFC 141, Brock Lesnar announced his retirement and that is reflected in this book. Every fighter who announced their move to a new weight class or fighters that signed with various promotions as of January 1, 2012 are reflected.

    Born: Tuscon, AZ, USA

Fights out of: San Diego, CA, USA

Team: Alliance MMA | Team Lloyd Irvin

    Overall Record: 19-1

    UFC Record: 2-0

    Background:

Cruz is the current UFC bantamweight champion. Cruz compiled a 9-0 record on the independent circuit before finally debuting in the WEC in 2007. Cruz's debut did not go as planned as he suffered his first career loss to Urijah Faber. Following the loss, Cruz dropped down to 135 lbs. and soon began to wreak havoc on the WEC's bantamweight division. Cruz put together a 5-fight win streak, earning him a shot at Brian Bowles' bantamweight title. Cruz defeated Bowles via doctor stoppage due to Bowles breaking both of his hands during the fight. Cruz went on to defend his belt against Joseph Benavidez and Scott Jorgensen before finally making his UFC debut in 2011. Following two successful UFC bantamweight title defenses over Urijah Faber and Demetrious Johnson in 2011, Cruz is unquestionably the top bantamweight fighter in the world today.

    2011 Breakdown:

Dominick Cruz made his UFC debut in 2011. Previously, he was the reigning WEC bantamweight champion.

Cruz made his official debut at UFC 132 on July 2nd against archrival Urijah Faber. Cruz and Faber did not disappoint as they fought a spirited 5-round war with Cruz prevailing in the end. With the win Cruz not only introduced himself to UFC fans, but avenged his only career loss.

Next up, was undersized bantamweight contender Demetrious Johnson. Cruz and Johnson headlined UFC Live 5 on October 1st. Once again Cruz prevailed, winning a 5-round unanimous decision over Johnson. In the fight, Cruz utilized his size advantage and showed off improved takedown skills.

    2012 Forecast:

Cruz is known for using his constant movement and quickness to keep his opponents off-balance. Cruz has excellent takedown defense and has developed an extremely effective stick and move boxing style. Cruz has almost cleared out the bantamweight division, though there are a few up and coming challengers such as Renan Barao or Michael McDonald. He is scheduled to face Urijah Faber in the rubber match following their coaching duties on The Ultimate Fighter 15.

Urijah Faber | The California Kid

    Ht: 5’6 - Wt: 135 - Age: 32

    Born: Isla Vista, California, USA

Fights out of: Sacramento, CA, USA

    Team: Team Alpha Male

    Overall Record: 26-5

    UFC Record: 2-1

    Background:

Urijah Faber may be the most well known name from the recently dissolved WEC. Faber made his WEC debut in 2006, winning the featherweight title from Cole Escovedo. Faber went on to defend his championship five times, racking up wins over Dominick Cruz, Jeff Curran, and Jens Pulver. In 2008, Faber lost his title to Mike Brown via TKO. Faber has unsuccessfully fought for the title on 3 separate occasions since his loss to Brown. Following a 2010 title attempt loss to Jose Aldo, Faber dropped down to the bantamweight division. Faber quickly took out Takeya Mizugaki and Eddie Wineland to earn a title shot against Dominick Cruz. Faber came up short once again, but he is now set for a rematch with Cruz in 2012. Faber is without question one of the elite fighters at 145 or 135 lbs., despite his lack of success in title fights.

    2011 Breakdown:

Faber fought 3 times in 2011, one of which was for the bantamweight title. Faber started out 2011 looking to capitalize on his recent bantamweight debut win over Takeya Mizugaki.

Faber fought Eddie Wineland at UFC 128 and thoroughly handled him for all 3 rounds. With the win Faber earned the right to face reigning bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.

Faber and Cruz headlined UFC 132 and dueled for 5 hard-fought rounds. Though Faber had his moments, Cruz did just enough to win the fight and remain champion.

Faber bounced back from the loss by defeating former bantamweight champion Brian Bowles. With the win, faber was thrust back into the title picture.

Cruz and Faber were recently named the upcoming coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 15 and will also face each other at a future event.

    2012 Forecast:

Faber will be getting another title shot in 2012 and this may be his last hope for regaining a championship belt. Faber has the skills to beat Cruz, but he cannot allow Cruz to dictate the pace. It seems as if the book is out on how to defeat Faber as his opponents have had success employing constant movement and leg kicks to keep Faber’s punching power and takedowns stifled. Faber is still one of the most exciting, powerful fighters in the lighter weight divisions, but the level of competition has increased over the last few years. Though Faber is fully capable of defeating most top contenders, he has fallen just short of taking out the divisions’ reigning champions.

    Joseph Benavidez | The Beefcake

    Ht: 5’4 - Wt: 135 - Age: 27

    Born: San Antonio, Texas, USA

Fights out of: Sacramento, CA, USA

    Team: Team Alpha Male

    Overall Record: 15-2

    UFC Record: 2-0

    Background:

Joseph Benavidez has compiled an impressive 15-2 record despite being outsized by most of his bantamweight competition. Benavidez's only two losses have come to current bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz. Benavidez initially signed with the WEC in 2008 after going 8-0 on the independent scene. Benavidez won his first two fights in the WEC including a decision win over former champion Jeff Curran. He would go on to lose his first career fight to Cruz, but rebounded with wins over perennial contenders Rani Yahya and Miguel Torres. With those wins, Benavidez earned another crack at Dominick Cruz, this time for the bantamweight title. Benavidez dropped a split decision in a hard-fought battle. Benavidez has notched 3 straight wins since his loss to Cruz, which has him pegged as the early favorite for the upcoming debut of the 2012 flyweight division.

    2011 Breakdown:

Benavidez stayed relatively quiet in 2011 despite putting together a 2-0 record since making his UFC debut at UFC 128. Although Benavidez was considered a top-5 fighter in his weight class he was questionably confined to the undercard.

At UFC 128, Benavidez defeated Ian Loveland by unanimous decision. It was a closer fight than most expected, but Benavidez proved to be the savvier and better all-around fighter.

Benavidez would go on to defeat Eddie Wineland at UFC Live 5 via unanimous decision. The fight was mostly one-sided and showcased Benavidez as an elite contender.

It was announced soon thereafter that the UFC would be starting a flyweight division. Joseph Benavidez is considered to be the odds on favorite to claiming its crown.

    2012 Forecast:

2012 is primed to be a big year for Benavidez. He will be participating in the four-man inaugural flyweight tournament. His first matchup will be against Yasuhiro Urishitani. He will then face the winner of Ian McCall and DaMarques Johnson. It would be no surprise for Benavidez to emerge from this tournament as the inaugural UFC flyweight champion. His greatest challenge will likely be the winner of McCall/Johnson, where both fighters are capable of matching Benavidez’s wrestling.

    Brian Bowles

    Ht: 5’7 - Wt: 135 - Age: 31

    Born: Charleston, West Virginia, USA

Fights out of: Athens, GA, USA

Team: The Hardcore Gym | American Top Team

    Overall Record: 10-2

    UFC Record: 2-1

    Background:

Brian Bowles burst onto the WEC scene in 2007 despite just being three fights into his professional career. Bowles wasted little time cementing himself as a top contender by defeating experienced veterans Charlie Valencia, Marcos Galvao, Damacio Page, and Will Ribeiro. Bowles earned the right to face longtime bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in 2009. Bowles finished Torres in the 1st round, winning the WEC bantamweight championship. Unfortunately, Bowles would not hold the belt for long, as he lost his first title defense to Dominick Cruz via doctor stoppage. Bowles had broken both of his hands and was unable to continue. Bowles was sidelined for nearly a year before finally making his return in 2011. Bowles picked up consecutive wins over Page and Takeya Mizugaki before losing to Uriah Faber in a number one contender fight.

    2011 Breakdown:

Bowles stayed active in 2011 fighting 3 times, going 2-1 overall.

Bowles made his UFC debut at UFC Live 3 against a familiar opponent, Damacio Page. Bowles weathered the early storm and then slapped on a guillotine, winning the fight in the same fashion that he had defeated Page nearly three years before. Bowles earned submission of the night honors and was well on his way to re-establishing himself as a top contender.

Bowles would next face Takeya Mizugaki at UFC 132. Bowles won the fight by unanimous decision, though he had a difficult time putting away his Japanese opponent.

With a 2-0 start to his UFC career, Bowles was primed for another title shot, but first he would have to face fellow contender Urijah Faber. Bowles was unable to land his trademark right hand, and Faber ended up taking him out in the 2nd round via guillotine.

Though Bowles is still a top contender he was thoroughly dominated by Faber and will have to restart his road back to the title.

    2012 Forecast:

With the coming introduction of the flyweight division there will be a vacancy for top contenders at 135. Bowles should fit that bill, but will likely have to win at least two more fights to step back into the title picture. Bowles has huge power in his hands and already has the experience necessary to contend with top-level competition. His loss to Faber was definitely a setback, but outside of Faber and Cruz, Bowles has clearly shown that he is a perennial top contender in the division.

    Demetrious Johnson | Mighty Mouse

    Ht: 5’3 - Wt: 135 - Age: 25

    Born: Madisonville, KY, USA

Fights out of: Kirkland, WA, USA

    Team: AMC Pankration

    Overall Record: 14-2

    UFC Record: 2-1

    Background:

Mighty Mouse Johnson started out his career with a 10-0 unblemished record on the independent circuit before making his WEC debut in 2010. Johnson quickly discovered that he would be facing bigger, stronger opposition after losing to Brad Pickett via decision in his WEC debut. With his first career loss behind him, Johnson began relying on his speed and wrestling. Johnson ran up four straight wins over top contenders Miguel Torres, Kid Yamamoto, and Damacio Page. Johnson would receive a title shot against Dominick Cruz in 2011, but Johnson was unable to deal with Cruz's size, style, and strength losing a unanimous decision. Luckily for Johnson the UFC has announced the introduction of the flyweight division, which will benefit Johnson's continued pursuit of a world title.

    2011 Breakdown:

Johnson went 2-1 in 2011, losing his only fight to champion Dominick Cruz. Johnson made his UFC debut at UFC 126 against Japanese star, Kid Yamamoto. Johnson surprisingly kept Yamamoto on his heels by using timely takedowns and excellent movement on his feet. Johnson continued to outwork Yamamoto for all 3 rounds, earning a unanimous decision. It was a huge win for Johnson and immediately put him on the short list of bantamweight contenders.

Johnson was next set to face fellow rising star, Renan Barao at UFC 130, but in a turn of events former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres was left without an opponent following an injury to Brad Pickett. Johnson was thrust into the fight and ended up winning a contentious unanimous decision. Although Johnson was able to score takedowns in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, Torres seem to be the more active fighter off his back. I personally scored the fight a draw, but nonetheless Johnson moved on to a title shot opposite Dominick Cruz.

Johnson was thought to be one of the only fighters capable of matching Cruz's speed coming into the title fight. Yet, Johnson quickly found out that Cruz's size and strength were a bigger concern. Johnson failed to institute his own offense and went on to lose via unanimous decision.

    2012 Forecast:

With the flyweight division's introduction into the UFC, Mighty Mouse will likely emerge as a top 5 stalwart of the division for years to come. Johnson will face Ian McCall in the 1st round of the tournament. It will be a tough fight for Johnson, but should he prevail he will face the winner of Joseph Benavidez and Yasuhiro Urushitani for the championship belt. Johnson’s speed advantage will be less of a factor at flyweight, but his wrestling and quickly developing striking should be huge assets.

    Miguel Torres

    Ht: 5’9 - Wt: 135 - Age: 30

    Born: East Chicago, Indiana, USA

Fights out of: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Team: Tristar Gym | Torres Martial Arts Academy

    Overall Record: 40-4

    UFC Record: 2-1

    Background:

Miguel Torres has pieced together one of the most impressive resumes in all of MMA. Torres compiled a 32-1 record on the independent circuit, avenging his only loss, before finally debuting in the WEC in 2007. Torres would win his WEC debut before facing off with reigning WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe. Torres easily captured the title after choking out Beebe in the very 1st round. Torres went on to defend his title 3 times before being stopped by Brian Bowles in 2009. Torres hit a bit of a rough patch in his career as he went on to lose his next fight to Joseph Benavidez. Torres bounced back with wins over veterans Charlie Valencia and Antonio Banuelos, but soon suffered a close decision loss to Demetrious Johnson. Torres finished off the year by defeating Nick Pace before being briefly released for making ill-advised comments on Twitter. Torres soon re-signed with the UFC a few weeks later.

    2011 Breakdown:

Torres was supposed to be one of the big stars transferring over from the WEC in 2011. Torres was always an exciting fighter constantly pushing the pace and looking for the finish. Yet, after suffering 2 recent losses, Torres began to change his style and leave himself less open to making mistakes.

At UFC 126, Torres thoroughly dominated Antonio Banuelos on route to unanimous decision. It wasn't the prettiest fight, but Torres used his long reach and methodically racked up points to win.

Torres was set to face Brad Pickett at UFC 130, but following an injury to Pickett, Demetrious Johnson stepped in on short notice. Torres was unable to keep the fight on its feet, but showed off his excellent guard and seemed to land the more significant offense from his back. Nonetheless, Torres did not walk out of the fight with his hand raised, losing a contentious split decision.

Torres looked to rebound against rising prospect Nick Pace. Pace missed weight for the fight and looked lethargic throughout the contest. Torres easily won the decision, but did not show the killer instinct that he had flashed previously in his career.

    2012 Forecast:

With Torres' experience, reach, and cardio he remains one of the top fighters at 135. Torres will be facing another fast-rising prospect in Michael McDonald in 2012. Should Torres win he may be only a fight or two away from getting back into the title picture. A loss though, would likely push Torres into a gatekeeper-type role. Torres is still young considering the amount of his fights under his belt, but he needs to figure out what type of fighter he wants to be. The WEC Torres preferred to push the pace, but in his most recent UFC fights, he is employing a patient counterstriking gameplan. The problem with that strategy is Torres’ chin is not what it used to be.

    Team: Combat Fitness

    Overall Record: 13-5

    UFC Record: 2-0

    Background:

Scott Jorgensen may be best known for his skin condition, vitiligo, but he should also be recognized for his status as a top contender at 135. Jorgensen entered the WEC in 2007, following a 4-1 record on the independent circuit. Jorgensen went just 2-2 in his first 4 WEC fights, but soon picked up steam winning his next 5 straight fights, including victories over Takeya Mizugaki, Brad Pickett, and Antonio Banuelos. The win streak propelled Jorgenson into a title fight with reigning WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in 2010. Jorgensen ultimately fell short of capturing the title as he was unable to figure out the riddle of Cruz's movement-oriented style. Jorgensen bounced back from his unsuccessful title shot by racking up wins over Jeff Curran and Ken Stone in the UFC.

    2011 Breakdown:

Jorgensen went 2-0 in the UFC re-establishing himself as a legitimate title contender.

Jorgensen fought Ken Stone at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale, scoring a first-round knockout with some brutal ground 'n' pound.

Up next for Jorgensen was former WEC featherweight champion Jeff Curran at UFC 137. Jorgenson uses takedowns to win a unanimous decision in a tight, hard-fought victory.

    2012 Forecast:

Jorgensen may be only 1 or 2 wins away from earning another crack at Dominick Cruz. First he will have to face fast-rising prospect Renan Barao in 2012. With a win Jorgensen may be the next title challenger considering the absence of viable contenders following the introduction of the flyweight division. Jorgensen’s wrestling is still his go-to skill, but he has shown solid power in his hands as of late.

    Ht: 5’6 - Wt: 135 - Age: 24

    Born: Natal, Brazil

Fights out of: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

    Team: Nova Uniao

    Overall Record: 27-1

    UFC Record: 2-0

    Background:

Renan Barao has put together one the most impressive winning streaks MMA has ever seen. Barao currently sits at 27-1, his only loss coming in his debut fight back in 2005. Barao finally left the Brazilian fight scene to come stateside in 2010 where he debuted in the WEC. Barao won his first 2 fights before transferring over to the UFC in 2011. Barao has continued to build upon his streak, racking up wins over former bantamweight champion Cole Escovedo and top contender Brad Pickett. Barao is likely on his way to a title shot in the very near future.

    2011 Breakdown:

Barao went 2-0 in 2011 as he made his UFC debut.

Barao was set to make his UFC debut against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 130, but Johnson was pulled out of the fight in order to face Miguel Torres. Barao ended up facing Cole Escovedo. The first 2 rounds were close, but Barao pulled away in the final frame racking up his biggest win to date.

Barao moved on to face Brad Pickett at UFC 138. The fighters wasted little time going toe-to-toe, earning fight of the night honors for their efforts. Barao ultimately walked out victorious, dropping Pickett with strikes and then locking on a fight-ending rear-naked choke.

    2012 Forecast:

Barao has positioned himself as a top contender for Dominic Cruz's bantamweight championship. Barao first has to get through Scott Jorgensen in 2012, which will likely prove to be a title elimination fight. Should Barao win, he may pose the biggest threat to Cruz's title reign. Barao is well-rounded with his heavy hands and solid ground game. Barao’s ability to deal with a wrestler of Jorgensen’s caliber definitely showed that Barao has few weaknesses.

Fights out of: Coconut Creek, FL, USA

    Team: American Top Team

    Overall Record: 20-6

    UFC Record: 0-1

    Background:

Brad Pickett finally made his way over to the WEC in 2009 following a successful career in England as a featherweight. Pickett entered the WEC on the strength of a 17-4 record. Pickett successfully made the cut to 135 and immediately strung together a 2-fight win streak, including a victory over Demetrious Johnson. Pickett would next face Scott Jorgensen in a #1 contender fight. Pickett was unable to overcome Jorgensen's wrestling-heavy attack and lost via unanimous decision. Pickett bounced back with a hard-fought victory over veteran Ivan Menjivar before falling to rising Brazilian prospect Renan Barao in his UFC debut.

    2011 Breakdown:

Pickett only fought once in 2011, losing his only bout.

Pickett was set to make his UFC debut at UFC 130 against former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres. Pickett suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from the contest.

After being out of the cage for nearly one year, Pickett returned to face fast-rising prospect Renan Barao at UFC 138 in his native England. Pickett and Barao did not disappoint as they let their hands fly, earning Fight of the Night honors. Unfortunately for Pickett, he was staggered by a Barao combination and ultimately choked out.

    2012 Forecast:

Pickett will look to rebound in 2012 and hopefully avoid the injuries that plagued his career in 2011. With a victory Pickett should be right back in the thick of the title hunt. The loss to Barao was a huge letdown for Pickett considering he was likely on the verge of title contention. Pickett has heavy hands and a solid takedown game. His overall skillset has improved significantly over the last few years under the tutelage of American Top Team. Pickett may never win a UFC title, but he will likely go down as one of the trailblazers for England’s lighter weight classes.

    Ht: 5’4 - Wt: 135 - Age: 29

    Born: Recife, Brazil

Fights out of: Atlanta, GA, USA

    Team: Ascension MMA

    Overall Record: 17-4

    UFC Record: 1-1

    Background:

Rafael Assuncao is one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC’s lighter weight divisions. Assuncao found early success in his career at featherweight racking up wins over Joe Lauzon and Jorge Masvidal before finally suffering his first loss to Jeff Curran via close majority decision in 2006. Assuncao went on to post four more wins before debuting in the WEC with a record of 12-1. Assuncao won his first 2 fights under the WEC banner against Jameel Massouh and Yves Jabouin. Assuncao would get to face ultra-popular Urijah Faber in what proved to be a #1 contender fight for the featherweight title. Assuncao succumbed to Faber's rear-naked choke in the 3rd round erasing any title hopes. Assuncao tried to bounce back against fellow Brazilian Diego Nunes, but lost via split decision. Assuncao finally picked up a decision win over L.C. Davis in 2010 before making his UFC debut against Erik Koch at UFC 128. Assuncao suffered a first round knockout in the fight and decided to make the cut to bantamweight following the loss. In Assuncao's bantamweight debut he defeated Johnny Eduardo via decision at UFC 134.

    2011 Breakdown:

Assuncao went 1-1 in 2011, making his UFC debut, while also switching weight classes.

2011 did not start off well for Rafael Assuncao. He was set to make his UFC debut against Manny Gamburyan at UFC 128, but instead squared off with fast-rising prospect Erik Koch. Koch delivered a counter right hand that dropped Assuncao and led to the finish. It was the first time Assuncao had been knocked out, but after going 1-3 in his last 4 fights, Assuncao knew it was time to make a move down to the bantamweight division or possibly risk being cut from the UFC roster.

Assuncao was set to face newcomer Darren Uyenoyama in his native Brazil at UFC 134, but Uyenoyama was forced to pull out of the fight due to an ongoing contract issue with his previous promoter. In stepped longtime Brazilian veteran Johnny Eduardo from the famed Nova Uniao camp. Assuncao controlled the early rounds with his takedowns and grappling ability, and even though Assuncao began to fade in the final frame, he was able to grind out the unanimous decision.

    2012 Forecast:

Assuncao will be sidelined for the first part of 2012 due to injury, but will likely face a big name upon his return. If Assuncao can string together some victories, the bantamweight division is in need of new title contenders. Assuncao's ground game and experience should provide him with the tools to find success in his new weight class. Assuncao’s fights have lacked excitement in recent years and he will have to work at improving his finishing ability.

    Fights out of: Kanagawa, Japan

    Team: Shooting Gym Hakkei

    Overall Record: 15-6-2

    UFC Record: 2-1

    Background:

Takeya Mizugaki started out his promising career in the famed Shooto organization. He quickly compiled a 6-0 record before struggling to an 0-2-2 record against stiffer, more-experienced competition like Kenji Osawa and Atsushi Yamamoto. Mizugaki moved on to the Cage Force promotion where he found instant success, winning the bantamweight championship before signing with the WEC in 2009. Mizugaki's WEC debut came under than less than ideal circumstances as he faced Miguel Torres on short notice for the WEC bantamweight championship. Mizugaki battled Torres for 5 hard-fought rounds, but ultimately came up short. Despite losing, Mizugaki picked up a legion of new fans due to his perseverance and toughness. Unfortunately, Mizugaki has been unable to mount any type of winning streak since joining the WEC and UFC, continually trading wins and losses. Mizugaki has shown he belongs by defeating Rani Yahya and Cole Escovedo, but has fallen short when facing elite competition such as Urjiah Faber, Brian Bowles, and Scott Jorgensen.

    2011 Breakdown:

Mizugaki fought three times in 2011 amassing a 2-1 record.

Mizugaki made his UFC debut at UFC Live 3 against Reuben Duran after his original opponent, Francisco Rivera, was forced off the card due to injury. Mizugaki and Duran split the first 2 rounds before Mizugaki pulled away in the final frame with his takedowns. Mizugaki earned a split decision victory, but it was a little too close for comfort considering Duran was making his debut on short notice.

Mizugaki moved on to face top contender Brian Bowles at UFC 132. The fight started out fairly even until the 2nd round where Bowles rocked Mizugaki with a big right hand ultimately paving the way for a unanimous decision victory.

Mizugaki once again fell short against an elite opponent, but looked to bounce back against former WEC bantamweight champion Cole Escovedo at UFC 135. After a back-and-forth 1st round, Mizugaki finished Escovedo with strikes in the 2nd round.

    2012 Forecast:

Mizugaki has turned into a gatekeeper of the bantamweight division. He's a tough matchup for most mid-tier fighters, but has struggled to compete with elite wrestlers and strikers. Mizugaki will be facing Chris Cariaso at UFC 144 in his native Japan. With a win, Mizugaki will likely face another top opponent, but a loss could put his UFC career in jeopardy. Mizugaki is a dangerous striker with solid grappling skills, but his lack of strength and wrestling will likely continue to keep him on the fringe of contender status.

Fights out of: Albuquerque, NM, USA

    Team: Jackson’s Submission Fighting

    Overall Record: 15-6

    UFC Record: 0-1

    Background:

Damacio Page is known for his devastating knockout power. He signed with the WEC in 2008 on the strength of a 9-3 record. In his WEC debut he faced off with Scott Jorgensen and won a unanimous decision instantly making him a contender in the bantamweight division. Page suffered an upset in his next fight, losing via submission to rising prospect Brian Bowles. Page bounced back with dominating victories over Marcos Galvao and Will Campuzano, the former coming via devastating knockout. Unfortunately, injuries started to plague Page's promising career. He was forced to pull out of fights with Takeya Mizugaki and Antonio Banuelos before finally returning one year later to face Demetrious Johnson at WEC 52. Page seemed to run out of gas after a solid 1st round performance and Johnson took advantage, submitting Page via guillotine. With the WEC’s demise, Page made his UFC debut looking to avenge his previous loss to Brian Bowles, but ended up losing again due to guillotine choke.

    2011 Breakdown:

Injuries continued to be the lead story in Damacio Page's career in 2011 as he only fought once, losing via submission.

Page made his UFC debut against Brian Bowles at UFC Live 3. Page came into the fight hungry to prove himself to a new audience of UFC fans and avenge an earlier career loss. Page tried looking for the knockout early, but once again found himself locked in Bowles’ guillotine choke and was forced to tap.

Page was set to put his injury woes behind him and take on Japanese star Kid Yamamoto at UFC 135 in a bout most MMA fans were clamoring, but both injury-riddled fighters ended up pulling out due to respective injuries.

    2012 Forecast:

Page is still young at 29 years of age, but it seems that the prime years of his career are passing him by. In addition, his limited ground skills have haunted him throughout his fight career. Page is fully capable of putting together some highlight reel knockouts, but he may be best served fighting a more cautious, calculated style in order to not leave himself open for takedowns. The UFC is likely hopeful that Page will return to his knockout ways and would be wise to book Page solely against strikers in order to get his confidence back.

    Background:

Ivan Menjivar is the longest-tenured veterans competing in the UFC's bantamweight division. Menjivar made his UFC debut at lightweight against Matt Serra way back in 2004. Menjivar lost to Serra via unanimous decision and parted ways with the UFC, bouncing around the globe, while fighting the likes of Urijah Faber, Joe Lauzon, and Caol Uno. Menjivar found early success in Japan's Hero 2006 16-man lightweight tournament before ultimately succumbing to Uno in the semi-finals. Menjivar went on to fight once more in 2006, competing in the now defunct IFL against Bart Palaszewski, where he lost via decision. Following the loss, Menjivar announced his retirement at just 24 years of age. Menjivar surprisingly made his return in 2010, quickly signing with the WEC after one win on the independent circuit. Menjivar fell just short in his WEC debut, losing a close decision to Brad Pickett, but quickly bounced back with two straight wins over Charlie Valencia and Nick Pace in his UFC return.

    2011 Breakdown:

Menjivar put together a solid 2-0 run in 2011 under the UFC banner.

Menjivar faced Charlie Valencia at UFC 129 in front of a pro-Menjivar Canadian crowd. Menjivar did not disappoint as he stopped Valencia with vicious elbows from the clinch in the very 1st round.

Menjivar moved on to face prospect Nick Pace at UFC 133, though he came in 3 pounds heavy for the bantamweight contest. The fight itself was very close and could have gone either way, but the judges awarded Menjivar a unanimous decision victory. Pace controlled the first round with his takedowns, but soon tired as he was unable to keep up with Menjvar's high pace.

    2012 Forecast:

Following a couple of big victories in 2011, Menjivar seems to be nearing title contention. Menjivar still has some holes in his game, but as long as he stays aggressive, he is a legitimate threat to finish any opponent. Menjivar’s wrestling will likely hold him back from ever winning the title, but considering his experience and explosiveness, Menjivar will likely prove to be a fan favorite in the UFC’s bantamweight division for years to come.

    Team: New Breed Academy

    Overall Record: 18-8-1

    UFC Record: 0-2

    Background:

Eddie Wineland made his WEC debut in 2006 after compiling a 10-4-1 record on the independent circuit. Wineland immediately challenged Antonio Banuelos for the inaugural WEC bantamweight championship at WEC 20, scoring a brutal first-round finish to win the title. Wineland’s first title defense would not be so fortunate as he dropped a unanimous decision to Chase Beebe at WEC 26. Wineland retuned to the independent scene before re-signing with the WEC in 2009. Wineland’s re-introduction to the WEC did not go as planned as was submitted by BJJ-ace Rani Yahya at WEC 40. Wineland bounced back with 4 straight wins to finish out his WEC career and once again regain contender status. Wineland made his debut in the UFC at UFC 128 against former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber. Wineland could not take advantage of the spotlight, losing via unanimous decision. Wineland suffered his second consecutive defeat as he lost to Faber's training partner Joseph Benavidez via unanimous decision.

    2011 Breakdown:

Wineland's 2011 did not go as planned. He had strung together a solid winning streak to close out 2010, but struggled against the elite of the bantamweight division, going 0-2 overall.

Wineland made his UFC debut at UFC 128 against former champion Urijah Faber. Wineland had no answer for Faber's takedowns and was unable to get his striking game going. Wineland looked out-classed throughout the fight, losing via unanimous decision.

Wineland was once again matched against a top contender, this time facing off with Joseph Benavidez. Despite having the size advantage, Wineland was unable to keep Benavidez from closing the distance. Benavidez dominated Wineland for most of the fight as he surprisingly won the majority of the striking exchanges.

    2012 Forecast:

Wineland should be able to bounce back in 2012, but it was evident that he has some growth to make if he is ever to challenge for the bantamweight title. Wineland is still only 27 years old and is fully capable of becoming a future contender. Wineland has huge power in his hands, but he is finding it increasingly difficult to land strikes when he is being put on his back.

    Michael McDonald | Mayday

    Ht: 5’8 - Wt: 135 - Age: 20

    Born: California, USA

Fights out of: Modesto, CA, USA

    Team: Oakdale MMA

    Overall Record: 14-1

    UFC Record: 3-0

    Background:

McDonald is one of the rising stars in the UFC. At only 20 years of age, McDonald has put together a 14-1 overall record, highlighted by wins over former WEC featherweight champion Cole Escovedo, Chris Cariaso, and Manny Tapia. McDonald's only career loss came to Escovedo back in 2009, but he avenged it a year later via knockout. McDonald debuted in the WEC in 2010, easily defeating Clint Godfrey via first-round submission. McDonald made the transition over to the UFC, and has quickly put together a solid 3-fight winning streak that has him pegged as a future title contender.

    2011 Breakdown:

McDonald went 3-0 in 2011 as he made his UFC debut.

McDonald made his UFC debut at UFC fight night 24 against Edwin Figueroa, who was filling in for Nick Pace on short notice. The two young prospects received Fight of the Night honors for their back-and-forth war that ultimately saw McDonald with his hand raised in the end. McDonald faded a bit in the final round, but it was a solid fight that quickly put McDonald on the map as an exciting fighter to watch.

McDonald would move on to face fellow striker Chris Cariaso at UFC 130. Once again McDonald was involved in another back-and-forth war, earning his 2nd straight close decision victory. McDonald and Cariaso each had their moments, but McDonald’s size and power seemed to carry him to victory.

McDonald looked to seal off an undefeated 2011 campaign with one more victory against Johnny Eduardo at UFC 139, but Eduardo was forced off the card with an injury. In stepped, unknown prospect Alex Soto on short notice. It took McDonald less than a minute to score the knockout win, earning him a check for Knockout of the Night honors.

    2012 Forecast:

McDonald's contender status will continue to rise as the bantamweight division is losing some top fighters to the flyweight division. McDonald is likely expected to be contending for the title in the coming year. He will face his biggest opponent to date in former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres at UFC 145. Torres will be a solid measuring stick for determining whether McDonald is ready for the big time. Thus far, McDonald has had some close calls when his fights have gone to decision. His gas tank is still a bit questionable, so he will have to learn to pace himself in big fights, especially considering title fights are 5 rounds. McDonald’s knockout power and explosiveness should make him a future threat at Dominick Cruz’s title in 2012.

    Born: California, USA

Fights out of: San Francisco, CA, USA

    Team: Faito Tamashii Combat Club

    Overall Record: 7-3

    UFC Record: 1-0

    Background:

Darren Uyenoyama made his mixed martial arts debut in 2002, stunningly defeating future Shooto flyweight champion, Rambaa Somdet, via decision. Following the big win, Uyenoyama decided to walk away from the sport. In 2007, Uyenoyama returned to MMA, going 3-1 overall, before taking on Japanese veteran Hideo Tokoro at Dream 4. The fight was a back-and-forth war, but Tokoro earned the unanimous decision win. Uyenoyama would only fight three more times, going 2-1 before surprisingly being signed by the UFC in 2011. Uyenoyama made his UFC debut against former Japanese phenom Kid Yamamoto at UFC on Fox 1. Most pundits believed Yamamoto would easily knock out Uyenoyama, but Uyenoyama employed his ground game to perfection as earned his biggest win to date. Uyenoyama will be making the cut to flyweight in 2012.

    2011 Breakdown:

Uyenoyama only fought once in 2011, but he made it count.

Uyenoyama was set to make his UFC debut against Raphael Assuncao at UFC 134. Due to a contract snafu with Shooto, Uyenoyama was forced off the card. With his contract issues behind him, Uyenoyama would finally appear at UFC on Fox 1 against dangerous striker and Japanese favorite Kid Yamamoto. The matchup appeared to be a showcase fight for Yamamoto. Uyenoyama was known for his ground game, but most felt he would have a difficult time taking Kid down. Yet, on fight night Uyenoyama employed a perfect strategy, allowing Yamamoto to get overaggressive and then seizing the opportunity to take him down. Yamamoto was unable to unleash his knockout power as Uyenoyama completely controlled Kid on the ground for most of the first two rounds. The third round was a bit closer, but ultimately Uyenoyama walked away with a fairly one-sided decision.

    2012 Forecast:

2012 promises to be a big year for Uyenoyama. He is set to make the cut to 125 lbs. and should become an immediate contender in the flyweight division. Uyenoyama’s ground game is solid as evidenced by his win over Yamamoto. He struggles greatly when he can’t get the fight to the floor, so he will have to continue and round out his striking game.

Kid Yamamoto dominated the Japanese fight scene, thrilling its crowds with highlight knockouts and a bad-boy image. Yamamoto previously had a run-in with the Japanese Yakuza, but his brother-in-law and Pride veteran Enson Inoue kept the peace and ultimately led Yamamoto to mixed martial arts. Kid made his debut in 2001, quickly establishling himself as a fighter to watch due to his wrestling and knockout power. Yamamoto would go on to tally a 13-fight undefeated streak spanning nearly 5 years. Along the Way, Yamamoto chalked up wins over Bibiano Fernandes, Jeff Curran, Caol Uno, Kazuyuki Miyata, Rani Yahya, and Jadamba Narantungalag, cementing his status as one of the top fighters in the world.
