    Chapter One

    Lydia and the Intruder

I’m a cat and adore being one. Until tonight, my life was simple, peaceful—but not anymore.

Bang! The wooden gate in the yard slammed! Rap, rap, scratch…rap, rap. The loud rattle of the storm door’s window hurt my ears. Crash! Something in the yard toppled to the ground. What was going on? The humans who take care of us cats never visit the adoption center at this time of night.

Meowwwww! I yowled, knowing my cozy nap time was over. Bouncing upright, I almost rolled off of my red chair. The stuffed teddy bear I use as a pillow went flying, filling the air with the scent of flowers. I wrinkled my nose. Teddy comes back from our laundry room smelling like that. I prefer the aroma of tuna. Wish our care givers would buy that kind of soap. Umm, Salmon would be nice too.

Rattle, rattle. My whiskers twitched. Mercy me! What’s making that terrible racket? Can’t a female get some beauty sleep around here? As I hopped to the floor, my claws clicked on the tile.
