About this audiobook

We can all be heroes. That’s the inspiring message of this lively biography series from New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer.

“Kids always search for heroes, so we might as well have a say in it,” Brad Meltzer realized, and so he envisioned this friendly, fun approach to biography – for his own kids, and for yours. Each audiobook tells the story of one of America’s icons in an entertaining, conversational way that works well for the youngest children, those who aren’t quite ready for the Who Was series. Each entry focuses on a particular character trait that made that role model heroic. For example, Abraham Lincoln always spoke up about fairness, and thus he led the country to abolish slavery. This audiobook follows him from childhood to the presidency, including the Civil War and his legendary Gettysburg Address.

This engaging series is the perfect way to bring American history to life for young children, and to inspire them to strive and dream.

The book starts out with Abrahma being a young child, reading while the other children played. Education was not readily available for the children in Indiana, but Abraham could read and write at an early age. When Abraham was 22 he moved to Illinois and got into a wresteling fight witha group of men. He saw slaves on a boat and knew it was not right. When he became President the Civil War started and he wanted the people to be free. The war ended and the people were free.

Too whimsical, too incomplete, too many ridiculous anachronisms for a biography. There are many, many better alternatives for introducing younger readers to Lincoln's life.

Love this series for my young children. I'm a social studies teacher turned librarian and when I found and read this book I began checking out and buying more in the same series. I love the illustrations and how each book seems to blend text and cartoon/comic bubbles (like in a graphic novel).

    I am Abraham Lincoln
    By Brad Meltzer (2014)

I liked I am Abraham Lincoln by Brad Melzer for three reasons. First, I liked the use of dialogue in the book. For example, on every page there are speech bubbles; the speech bubbles depict Lincoln talking to himself or other people. Dialogue makes any text, fiction or non-fiction, interesting and personalized. Second, I liked the quote displayed on the back of the book, which reads, “I will always speak my mind. And speak for others.” This quote says a lot about Lincoln, he is very forthright. Lastly, I liked how throughout the entire book Lincoln is portrayed as a cartoon character; however, at the end of the book, Meltzer includes a photograph of Lincoln. This will help young readers identify Lincoln, as they get older. Overall, the “big idea” of I am Abraham Lincoln is to inform readers about the 16th president of the United States and his accomplishments.
