“What does holding space mean to you?” This is the question at the heart of this discussion between writer, professor, and podcaster Roxane Gay, cookbook author Julia Turshen, and comedian and actress Michelle Buteau

Everand held a warm community gathering at The Greene Space NYC for the discussion to commemorate the launch of Roxane Gay &, a series of essays curated by Gay in celebration of original voices and the experience of being human. This Everand Originals series inspires us to look within and reflect, and to hold space for the truths of others — because each of us has a story that only we can tell.

Holding Space was an opportunity for inspired and open conversation, listening, learning, and storytelling. Watch the event for humorous and poignant observations about cooking, powerlifting, and much more.

Turshen kicks off the Everand exclusive Roxane Gay & series with Built for This, a memoir about embracing her inner and outer strength. Turshen shares how she learned to appreciate her appetite for food, started powerlifting to marvel at all the things her body could do, and now knows the meat on her bones is “made of the things [she’s] capable of.”

Check out more Julia Turshen books for mouthwatering recipes and plenty of warm advice.

Trauma is a common thread for so many, from personal experience to the collective trauma of racism, climate change, and a global pandemic. Gay’s personal trauma has shaped her life and work, including her 2017 memoir about her own sexual assault, Hunger.

In Writing into the Wound (an Everand Original written before the start of the Roxane Gay & series), Gay unpacks the aftermath of Hunger, exploring the public reaction that reopened her wounds once more. The result is a skillful guide to sharing, processing, and healing from trauma through writing.

“To change the world, we need to face what has become of it,” she writes. “To heal from a trauma, we need to understand the extent of it.”
