I locked arms with the girls on either side of me, forming a wall to block Cherry Popper, the opposing team’s jammer. She broke through and Pretty Pushy took a fall, spilling out of bounds. I stayed with the pack, doing what I could to help Jillen Auf, our own jammer, get past the other team’s blockers.

Cherry Popper rounded the track, passing two of my teammates and scoring those points before Jillen Auf got going. I skated faster, propelling myself along the inside track, then spun around to get in front of Cherry.

Skating backwards was tricky, but I managed to slow her. She swerved and jumped, barely missing the out of bounds line before tearing past me. I spun after her, but collided with one of the other tryout girls blocking from the other side.

We spilled across the track, but our helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads did their job. The other players whizzed past, skate wheels clattering on the track. I
